Circle of Life

This play was written in 2009. An improvised version of this play was staged on the 22nd of December, 2009 at the school where I was teaching, then.

P.S: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents are the results of my imagination or have been used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events/ locales/ persons- living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

Narrator (dramatic): 3yrs have passed. Abhimanyu is in his Final Year of college. He and Anjana are dating and are very happy together. Tragedy strikes---Jignesh, 45, dies suddenly, following a heart attack. All the responsibilities fall on Abhimanyu’s young shoulders. A rich, pampered boy who has never known the difficulties of life, will now have the responsibility of his sister who is still in school and his mother. Not to forget, he was very attached to his doting father. To add to all his sorrows, Jignesh hadn’t cleared his debts. You can see how distressed Young Abhimanyu looks. His friend Aryan is consoling him.

Abhimanyu (sadly): Life has taken such a turn. I don’t know what to do next. We are heavily in debt.

Aryan (consoling): Don’t worry. Everything will work out just fine.

Abhimanyu (grimly): I’ll have to take up work. I wanted to do my MBA from the UK. Now I can never even think of that. I have to repay my father’s debts and look after my family. I don’t have …… don’t have the courage(sobs)

Aryan(cheerully): Come I’ll take you to a place and you’ll feel better.

(Both go to a Mela, in the outskirts of Delhi, a couple of boys are performing acrobatics and dangerous stunts)

Abhimanyu (curious): Why have you got me here?

Aryan(philosophical): You see those boys there? (Abhimanyu nods) They risk their lives everyday in order to earn money and cater to the needs of their family. And look at the expression on their faces. Do they look sad? No. They have happily accepted the struggles and challenges of life and take each day as it comes. Worrying needlessly won’t take us anywhere. We need to be practical. I know its hard but there is no other option. Come lets watch some of their stunts. You’ll feel better.

Abhimanyu (feeling better): Ok!

Item 8: Daring stunts / acrobatics
