Circle of Life

This play was written in 2009. An improvised version of this play was staged on the 22nd of December, 2009 at the school where I was teaching, then.

P.S: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents are the results of my imagination or have been used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events/ locales/ persons- living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

(A huge tent with many people, celebrating the birth of a baby boy)

Narrator (conversational, happy mood): People are celebrating the birth of Abhimanyu Patel son of Mr Jignesh Patel, a jeweler, based in Chandni Chowk, Delhi and Mrs Rekha Patel. Jignesh, 25, is a typical pot-bellied, businessman who looks older than his years and Rekha is a shy, dutiful housewife (her face is barely visible, owing to her veil). Everyone seems to be having a good time.

Guest1 (envious): Look at the amount the the rich guy has spent!

Guest2 (sarcastically): Yeah! He needs to get rid of his black money!

Guest1: Well the kid’s damn lucky!

Guest2: You bet!

Guest1(surprised): Hey whats that??

Guest2: (enthusiastically): Seems the rich guy has invited a troupe of dancers to perform. What extravagance!

Guest1: I’m thinking of his bank balance man!!!!! Hey they are going to dance to the beats of  Gujarati Song, Come lets watch!!!!

Dance One :  Gujarati folk song
