Katie was never the adventurous type. She preferred to stay at home and finish her English essay or clean her room. Her whole world shattered when her mom told her that she was to visit her grandma in Australia, where on almost every corner there was a creepy crawly waiting for her. She faces many dangers and has to make some decisions that will change her life.

3. Leaving

Katie rubbed her sleepy eyes and groaned.  Her mom was gently pulling back her thin yellow curtains and the early summer light was streaming in through the opening.  She was humming some random song, way too loudly for that early in the morning in Katie's opinion.  Katie mumbled something unintelligible.

"What was that, darling?" Katie's mom questioned sweetly, absentmindedly stooping to pick up Katie's shirt from the carpeted floor.  She fingered her hair behind her ears and looked up at Katie.

"I said, 'It's Saturday.'  I get up at nine on Saturday mornings."

"Not this Saturday.  This Saturday you get up at seven!"

Then it hit her.  She sat up quickly.  Today was the day that Katie was flying to Australia.                   Oh no! Oh no, oh no, oh NO!  Katie thought furiously.  This can't be happening!  How am I going to fly across an entire ocean when I can't even fly across two states without having a complete panic attack?

Out loud she said to her mom, "Oh yeah!  I can't wait!  Yay!"  But when her cheerful mother turned her back to dust the window sill, Katie flopped back on her bed and groaned inwardly.

Thirty rushed minutes later, she was standing awkwardly at the entrance to the ramp at the airport, waving emphatically to her family.  She almost cried because it was so nice to see her family being so supportive, but then she saw Nate and John were shoving each other and Annabell standing as stiff as a board, barely waving one perfect hand.   Then Katie blew a single kiss to each of her family members, and turned to board the airplane.  But as she glanced over her shoulder for one last look at her family, she saw Nate and John trying to wipe off her air kisses.  But just as she was going to give up on trying to get her family to be normal, she saw a single tear slide down Annabell's pretty face.
