11. Chapter 7: Finally Outta There

    Skyler's P.O.V.

School was soon over and I hurried out of that building and into my red Scion car. Once I turned it on, I looked at the time. 3:26. Perfect, I thought. As I drove, I kept thinking about Max's present. I had already bought it and now, it was sitting in the trunk of my car. I drove for about 20 minutes when I finally reached Max's school. I spotted him near his teacher, Ms. Bernal, looking around for me. I waved my hands and smiled as he had spotted me. I saw him talking to his teacher and he was soon walking towards me. He got in the backseat. "Buckle up" I reminded him and he started to put his seat belt on. I started to drive off, towards home. "How was school today?" I asked him. "Not so good. Lot's of kids gave me birthday punches." he answered. That angered me. I don't like anyone messing with my brother. He's the only one I got and I can't risk losing him. I just can't. I didn't realize I was gripping the steering wheel so hard, my knuckles were white. I took deep breaths to calm myself down. "Don't worry. My present will be better." I answered and forced a smile. "I know it will." he told me. The rest of the ride home was silent except the music blasting from the speakers of my car. I know I had to focused on the road and driving, but I couldn't help but worry. Was Max having a bad birthday so far? I asked myself. I hope not. I have to focus. I told myself. Focus. Focus. Focus. We were soon home. Home sweet home. I took Max's present out of the trunk without him looking once I parked the car. Once I got home, I turned to Max holding out them carefully wrapped present in front of his nose and yelled "Happy birthday Max!".
