23. That Moment

That moment when everything stops, like your frozen in time. Is horrible. You can't do, say, scream anything, like your wind was pushed out from you. You are a statue; helpless, worthless. You find yourself falling into a state of shock, of denial, but you can't avoid it. Though you think that this can't be happening to you, it's happening too fast. Your worst fear is hurdling at you. The sound of the gun being shot, rings in your ears. His cries carry across the dark, unforgiving room. Then his head hits the table. All you see is red, all you feel is a tingling deep in side of you. All you are is broken and scared. You look at the shooter, a wicked smile plays across her lips. She knows what she did. She knows that the look you have is her fault, and she's proud of it. She loves to see you suffer, cry, and as she turns the gun away from that amazing guy, to you, you fight. You fight with everything you have, everyone you love, with everyone she hurt, everyone you lost. You fight until you can't fight anymore. You fight because that fear, you didn't know you had, hit so close to home. The fear of losing someone you love, you fell for so hard. It's a real bitch when your enemy knows you better than you do.

I sat my journal down on the bedside table, next to the vase of get-well flowers. The room was covered in decorations; banners, get-well cards, and flowers. I looked at the motionless body in front of me. The monitors beeping didn't soothe me at all. It's like they were mocking me, saying, it's your fault, if you just told him no the first time, he wouldn't be here. We can stop at anytime, now. We can flat line.

"She's gone now." Grayson said to me as he walked in. His wavy blonde hair was covering his eyes. His beard has grown in and had a Mark Sloan look to it. His ripped jeans and old t-shirt, with huge holes for the arms, made him look even more badass than he really was. His rough hand was gripping my shoulder. "For good. You did some serious damage. Uncle is in jail now. His court date is coming up soon."

I shook my head. "But, she's not. She's always there. That fucked up smile. It doesn't make a difference if she's dead or not, she's always going to be there. So is he." I reached up to touch Harry's soft curls. Yes, I was relieved that she wasn't here anymore, but what she left in her path is still here. "It's their fault. Mom's gone because of them, maybe even Harry."

"Jay," Gray said softly. "Let's get you something to eat. OK? You look so small."

"That's because I vomit everything I eat." I said, half-heartedly wiping the tears away. "You don't want to deal with that, but go ahead, get something to eat." He had been here since we which from Greece to England hospitals, three days, and it doesn't look like he ate much. He was either with me in my room or dealing with the press, or Judy. I haven't seen him flirt with a single nurse, which was a shocker for me. "Hey, there might even be a cute girl."

After a while, and several assuring nods, he did. Then it was just me and Harry, again. His face was so lifeless, so sad. I couldn't help it, I started to cry again. I crawled onto the bed with him, ignoring the uncomfortable bandage wrapped around my waist, and just laid there, letting the tears fall. "I'm , so, so, sorry Harry. Please, please wake up."

He didn't move.

"He really loves you." My head shot up to look at Niall. He looked worse than Harry. His skin pale, making the dark circles around his eyes even darker. "Whenever we talked about you, he always had this far off look in his eyes. His voice changed and it got soft and girly like. I always thought it was a one way thing, but obviously it's not." He gestured to me. "Des told me once, that you're hard to read, that sometimes you can't even figure out what you're feeling. Do you know now?"

I nodded my head. "Yeah, I know, now." I sighed, why couldn't it have been earlier? "Have you gotten any closer to finding her yet?"

"No." He started to cry. I ran to him, embracing him in a hug. His chest was shaking with sobs. I squeezed him tight, trying to hold back my own tears.  "Ilovehersomuch. Iwasgoingtopropose-thatnight."

"What?" They had just started going out, how had it already gotten to that? Then I looked at Harry and realized that Harry and I weren't any better. I shook my head and smiled in disbelief. How had we gotten into this mess? "She will say yes."

"Yeah." I patted his back. "Now go get something to eat. My brother's down there right now, you two can get to know each other." I thought about Des telling me that he loved The Pieces, that he had posters of them. If that's the case: "You'll recognize him, trust me."
