5. Chapter 5

Αύγουστος (August) 6 hours after midday

It has been 3 months since Acrisias left, and things have been getting worse. Enoll is beating me constantly, we have little food, for we are not used to working in the fields, and we have little to no money to buy things in the market. In the past 3 months I have learned to fight with a sword well. I have even beaten my trainer, which gave him quite a shock. I do not tell Enoll about these fighting classes, for I’m afraid that she will make me stop. I am planning my escape soon, to walk the 164 miles from Athens to Mt. Olympus, where I will confront Ares about my father. I have gathered up all the food I could scavenge in the past few months. It isn't much, but it’s something. I have packed everything that I might need in a small leather pack with straps on your back. My father gave it to me. The pack includes: A woven blanket, set of clothes, leather sandals, wooden owl that Acrisias gave me, knife, rope, some coins, flint and steel, and a bow and arrows that I will carry across my shoulders. I will also bring: a sword in a scabbard strapped to my hip, leather hair band, forged letter letting me into where Mt. Olympus is located, and a necklace that father gave me. The necklace has many charms and special pebbles strung on a braided leather cord. Overall, it was pretty heavy, but I will leave tomorrow.

I told Enoll that I was going out to the market to get some more fresh eggs, then when she had gone down to the river to wash the clothes (having much less of a job since father and brother left), I grabbed my supplies and dashed out. I stopped outside the door a thought about telling Enoll where I was going. I hid my things in the bush by the door and ran inside and grabbed the papyrus that my owl had been wrapped in. I quickly wrote a brief note to Enoll (Acrisias had taught me to read and write before he had left) saying:

Dear Enoll,

I am leaving to avenge father’s death. The Healer may not know he died, but I do. Ares killed him.

I choked up on writing this last part, remembering my father’s cold unmoving body. I took a moment to compose myself then continued writing:

I have everything I will need, so do not worry. I hope to be back with in a year and half’s time, but if I am not, then I was killed by Ares, or by a monster.

Your step-daughter,

Limbrious ΏΏΏ

I placed the letter on my bed, where I knew she would find it. I then went outside, grabbed my things from the bush and started my long, and probably treacherous, journey.

Πολλές ώρες αργότερα (many hours later)

Limbrious had no idea that as she was passing a small town to get some more provisions, Enoll was back at the hut reading and re-reading the note that Limbrious had left her. As she re-read the note for the 4th time, she suddenly burst into tears. For she had lost her entire family, first her caring husband to a strange sickness, then her handsome son to the military, and finally, her beautiful daughter to… the gods. The gods had taken away her family, and doing that is something that she will never forgive. So when Athena’s Day came, Enoll just pulled the cloth over her windows and stayed home mourning her lost family.
