8. Chapter 8

We were a mess. He had caught me. I was sneaking out. He had caught me. I loved him. He had caught me.

"Cole, are you alright?" I asked breathlessly.

"My question exactly." He replied.

"I am so sorry, I can't even tell you, I mean, I must have looked so stupid."

"Well I can't deny you that you did look like an absolute tipsy." He grinned a little.

Composing myself, I stood up still a little wobbly from my near death experience. Cole's hand flew instantly to my back to steady me. "Thank you" I said again. I didn't plan on telling Cole what my fate was for I wanted to keep my last night with him a happy one, expecting that I would be dead my tomorrow afternoon. I shuddered only a fraction thinking at that before I turned back to him asking

"Well then, what was all that hassle for, anyways?"

"I wanted to take you out tonight. That old play writer isn't as stupid as he might seem. I thought you and I could go to see one of his plays at the Globe, if you wanted."

"Your not serious, are you? I mean, you really mean that, right? I've always wanted to see Shakespeare!" I felt true excitement bubble up inside me. Cole looked like he was about to burst he was so happy. It felt good that, for once, someone in my life wanted to please me.

"Well then, come on you slow poke! I got a carriage for us, come on!" he laughed. I stopped though as the realistic part of me kicked in.

"Wait, won't someone notice me though, I mean-"

I was stopped short when he said "Oh right, I almost forgot, I got you this to wear tonight."

He produced a rectangular box from behind him, wrapped elegantly in golden paper and lined with a silver ribbon. I was speechless.

"Cole, I couldn't accept this, I... It just wouldn't be right." I said quietly.

"Well, you will be accepting it whether you like it or not." Shoving the box into my hands, he smiled sweetly. "Go into your kitchen real quick and just slip the main dress over your head. Don't bother with all those... uhh..."

"Corsets." I filled in for him.

"Yes corsets, hurry bow, before we miss the show!"

At this point, I didn't really have a choice, I thought, so despite my better judgement (I seemed to be going against my judgment a lot these days) I slipped silently into the kitchen and started unwrapping the box. Inside was something I never thought I would even touch. The dress was a rich, primrose yellow that had ivory frills lining the sleeves and the neck line. There was a stunning forget-me-not blue color for the bunting on the bottom of it as well as the bows. Lined with an intricate faint lace, the middle opened up into a light pearly hugh. I traced my finger over it, feeling the soft fabric soothe my hands. Almost as if I was in a trance, I slipped the treasure over my head and it fit me like a glove. I tied my cornsilk hair into a loose bun at the nape of my neck and for the first time, I wasn't imagining being a princess, for tonight, I was one. Stepping out into the cold night, I saw Cole standing causally by the trees. God, he looked beautiful, I thought. Walking towards him, I felt the dress swaying softly under me. I felt so beautiful.

Cole's eyes flicked up, staring at me in wonder. He walked over to me very slowly and then leaned in to my ear and whispered "I will love you to the day I die, Miss. Cortin." His breath tickled my ear as he pressed his lips right where my hidden birth mark was. Finally he pulled back and took one look at me. He broke into laughter, trying to be as quite as he could.

"Do I really affect you that much to make you look like that?" He teased.

"Oh shut up will you?" I muttered, marching toward the road. Catching up to me, he took my hand in his as we made are way down to the carriages.
