The Queen and I

Helena is one of Queen Elizabeth I's servants . She has a completely ordinary life, a simple girl working hard and earning her keep for her endlessly long family back at home. Everything has a routine for her and is completely orderly, just how she likes it but when she is accused of a life threatening crime, here whole world turns upside down.

3. Chapter 3

I was walking walking on clouds by the time I was going down to the Servants Briefing. We were having a Royal Dance tonight in honor of the Earl of Leicester's arrival, for he was one of the Queens absolute favorites but, of course, that was quite possibly the farthest thing away from my mind right now. He had asked me for my name! He, Sir Cole, had asked for my identity! I had NEVER felt so valued in my life. But, furthermore, he said he wanted to see me again, I..... "Snap out of it, will ya? I need moral support at the moment because I think that WE are about to loose are jobs!" Beth hissed at me. I did feel for her but instead of saying something comforting I said dreamily, "Did you hear what he said to me? Did ya? I swear, I think he might be a god...."

"For heavens sake, Leena, he wasn't genuinely complimenting you! Don't you see, he only sees us as objects, not humans, really. His eyes were full of lust while he was lookin' at ya! What was I tellin' ya this mornin' about them Royals? They are no good, all he wants is to sneak you into his bedchamber, take the advice from someone who knows!" And with that, my best friend stormed off. I never said she didn't have a temper and my comment about Sir Cole probably didn't help her worrying very much. I walked gently over to her only to see angry and anxious tears streaking down her face. "Bethie, I'm sorry," I whispered gently, "I was being a real idiot, talkin' about him that way, I know how he has been to ya and I am real sorry, don't worry I won't do it again...." Instead of her responding back to me, she turned into me and hugged me as tight as she could. Her shoulders shuddered as she silently sobbed. I stroked her hair but didn't say anything. We stood like this for several minutes until the booming voice of Miss.Tune abruptly tore us out from each others sorrows. "As you all know, Robert Dudley, The Earl of Leicester has arrived. He is currently one of the Queens favorite family members and since he is an extra special guest, we will throw an extra special dance. I expect each and every one of you to be on your BEST behavior tonight, for if your not, I will personally skin you alive." At that moment, Miss.Tune was looking straight at us. After I had crashed into Sir Cole and he was gone, she dragged us back both by our hair and then gave us a good box to the ears. As Miss.Tune finished up her briefing, we all went back up to the servant quarters to change into our more formal uniforms. Usually the men waited on the tables however two of them had fallen ill and I had been given the duty tonight. You might call it fate that this was happening and, despite Beth's warning, I kept imagining the chance of once again seeing the dashing Sir Cole.

"We need more wine on the third table!" Someone hollered. Although I was terribly smitten and determined to find Cole, I wasn't about to ignore my various chores. Turning around, I poured more wine into the glasses and swiftly carried it off to table three. I had already gotten quite used to my routine and at this point, I simply felt as though I were dancing. As I reached the third table I saw lots of Dukes and Duchesses, none of them familiar. After the wine was distributed, a jolly tune started floating out of the piano. I froze right in the middle of the room, entranced by the richly colorful dresses, the spinning of the ladies, the bowing of the men. As the music got higher, the laughing got louder, the smiles got bigger and I felt an absolute emptiness in my heart starting to form. I would NEVER be like them. The dreams of being carried of by a knight in shining armor were just dreams and nothing more. For I would never be as carefree and as happy as these people. I was a nobody, a nothing, completely invisible to them. I came to terms with this sad ending long ago, but even so, the bite of disappointment will never fail to hurt just as much as it did before. "Uggg!" I cursed silently. I had once again drifted off so far that my eyes had closed. I knew I was completely done for if Miss. Tone ever heard of this. When I opened my eyes, I nearly jumped out of my socks. Those same, mesmerizing royal blue eyes stared back. His lips began to move and a velvety voice flowed out, asking the impossible. "My dear Miss. Cortin, I would be honored if I could have this next dance." Not uttering anything, my body moved utterly on its own, putting my wine tray down and placing my soared, little hands in his. Being swept onto the dance floor, I realized not only Miss. Tune would her about my failing of orders. No, not only Miss. Tune but the whole wide palace of Queen Elizabeth the I.
