REVISING AND EDITING Werewolves Aren't Real...Duh (1st book of the Brotherly Rivals series)

Hi. My name is Rain. I know... weird name right? Well, that's my name. Another interesting fact about me is that I'm an orphan. My parents got killed by a mugger when I was 2. I don't remember much about them, but I do remember my sister. She gave me to the orphanage after mom and dad died. She's probably dead. Also, I'm a cutter. I don't particularly enjoy it, but it makes me feel like... I have control. I don't have control at the orphanage. I'm just one of the 50 kids who have to live in this place. They don't give a damn about any of us. I'm turning 15 tomorrow, but they don't care. So I'm running away.
*That's what Rain thought. Little did she know her life was about to change forever.

13. Zachary and Family Ties

Rain's p.o.v.

I was awakened in the middle of the night by a quiet tapping on the window. Figuring that it was just a branch tapping on the window, I turned over and tried to go back to sleep, but the tapping only got louder. Sighing, I got up and opened the curtains, figuring it was Jonathan or Zachary reminding me that I couldn't escape, though I wasn't even trying to. Instead, I was met with the familiar faces of Lexi and Rider. I almost screamed, then reminded myself that it was three in the morning. Rider smiled at me and a huge smile made its way onto my face. Lexi put her finger over her lips and motioned for me to open the window. I was about to, then noticed the alarm on the window. Of course, escaping would never be that easy. I pointed at the alarm, and realization washed over the faces of both Lexi and Rider. I'd have to disable the alarm if I was to get out. It was a good thing that I'd been disabling alarms in the orphanage since I was twelve. I had to have real food once in a while, so I'd sneak out in the middle of the night and go to Wendy's or something. I popped the lid off of the alarm and set to work. I managed to disable it in five minutes, with it only going off once. When it did, I thought my heart stopped. I held my breath and waited to see if someone heard it. No one came, so I continued. I ripped the useless alarm off of the window when the door behind me opened. I whipped around to face Zachary, another one of Leon's goons, looking at me with his arms crossed. Zachary had blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. "I knew I heard the alarm go off." He said, looking behind me at Rider and Lexi. When he looked at Lexi, he froze. So did Lexi. I remember seeing that same look on Malcolm's face when he saw Jakayla. They were mates. Rider must have figured that out, because his facial expression changed from confusion, to shock, to blind fury in a minute. "Go Rain." Zachary said, motioning to the window. "What?" I asked, confused. "Get out of here. I'll cover for you as long as I can." He said, opening the window. I nodded and jumped out of the window to be met with a bone-crushing hug from Rider. "I've missed you." He said into my hair. "I've missed you too." I said, tears welling up in my eyes. "I think this is touching and all, but we really need to get moving." An unfamiliar voice said. "That's Megan." Rider said, answering my unasked question. "Thank you. As soon as this whole thing is over, you're welcome in our pack." Rider said to Zachary, releasing me from the hug, but still holding me to him. Zachary nodded, him and Lexi side by side.

“See ya later, Red. I'll try to keep the monster at bay.” Zachary said, holding out his fist. He always was the nicest one of Leon’s goons, and he gave me the nickname ‘Red’ the day after I got here. “Until next time, Blondie.” I said, bumping his fist with mine. “Bye Lexi.” He said, kissing Lexi on her cheek and climbing back in through the window. “Bye Zach.” Lexi whispered, long after Zachary had shut the window. “Again, touching, but we gotta go.” ‘Megan’ said. I’m beginning not to like her. “All we need to do is get to the nearest underground passage. I think if we keep moving constantly, we can get there by sunrise.” Lexi said, snapping out of her trance and spraying me with a weird bottle that looked empty. Rider nodded and began pulling me along by my arm. “The passage is the other way.” Lexi said, amused. I started laughing as Rider made a huge U-turn and began heading the other way. He looked back at me and smiled.

 Rider’s p.o.v.

I felt stupid when I went the wrong way, but at least it made my Angel laugh. I never realized how much I missed that laugh until then.

We continued walking until we saw the sun rising. I was the one who suggested we stop for a bit because Rain was starting to fall behind, and I could tell she was really tired. “I’m fine.” She protested for the fifth time. “Even if you aren’t tired, we are.” Megan snapped. She was really starting to get on my nerves, and I’m pretty sure Rain and Lexi weren’t too fond of her either. “I’ll take the first watch.” Megan offered. Rain kept saying she was fine and that we could keep moving, but no one was really listening to her anymore. “Eat a cookie and go to sleep.” I told her, handing her an Oreo from a small package I had brought with me. She was still protesting, but not as much. She obediently ate her cookie and settled down to go to sleep. I sat and watched her as she drifted into a restless sleep, still protesting even in her sleep. She’s very persistent. “What’s your problem with Rain?” I asked Megan. There was no point in beating around the bush, so I just got straight to the point. “What do you mean?” Megan asked, clearly avoiding the question. “You know exactly what I mean. It was a pretty straight forward question, so I want a straight forward answer.” I said, trying desperately to keep calm. Some people tell me I have anger management issues, and I was trying to get that under control. “I just can’t believe that Leon would just give up on me like that. When I refused to be his Luna, he didn’t protest or anything. He just said ‘okay, I guess we’re going with Rain’. I just… I thought I meant more than that to him. To think, while we were together, he already had my replacement in mind.” She cried. Well, that just made me feel bad. “Leon is no good. You should know that. Did you ever really love him? Or did you just not like the fact that you could be replaced so easily?” Rain said. “I thought you were asleep?” Megan and I said at the same time. “What can I say? I’m a great actress. I know, I know, you guys are amazed with my acting skills and feel stupid that you fell for it.” She said with a smile on her face. “Anyway, you’re Megan W., aren’t you?” She asked Megan. “So what if I am?” Megan asked stubbornly, her arms crossed. “Because I get exactly where you’re coming from. Leon isn’t right for you. Leon isn’t right for anyone. He just uses any girl that he can get to like him. I have a feeling that the only reason he was ever attracted to me was that, for starters, he wanted to destroy Rider by picking off people he loves. He took Lily, Anthony, me, and I’m pretty sure Lexi was next to go. Also, I’m one of the few girls that didn’t fall subject to his “charm”. The reason Leon's so miserable because he killed his mate.” She said. Megan and I both froze. “How would you know that?” I asked her, a little frightened. “From the way he acts. Izzy told me that, even with rejection, you’ll always feel like half of you died if your mate dies, right?” She asked. Megan and I both nodded. “It only makes sense that she either died or got killed, because Leon always had that faraway look in his eyes, and on the first day……..he killed a girl. She didn’t protest, and afterwards, he laughed, but there was pain laced in. That girl didn’t protest, which is very strange, like she wanted it to happen. I know that if I were Leon’s mate, I would commit suicide. I’m not very far from it anyway.” She said, holding out her arms. There were over a dozen fresh cuts on each of her arms. “You’re emo?”  Megan said, backing away slowly. “I prefer being called a cutter, but whatever floats your boat.” She said. A whole new wave of anger washed over me. I got up and began heading back towards that house. “Where are you going?” Rain said, running to catch up with me. “I’m going to kill him. Even if it’s the last thing I do, I’m going to kill him right now.” I said through my teeth. “Rider, don’t do that. Let’s just get to the passage, and we’ll figure something out there.” Rain said, trying to get me to stop. “Rider, please! There’s a better way to do this! If you go now and end up getting yourself killed, I’ll never forgive you.” She said, pulling me by my arm. “IF YOU DIE, SO HELP ME I’LL KILL MYSELF TOO!” She screamed. I stopped and turned to her. She was crying and I could tell she was dead serious. “It’s not like I have a family to go to. All I have is you, Izzy, and Malcolm. Sure there’s everyone else, but they’d be affected by your death almost as much as I would. I promise you, if you go right now, I’ll follow you. If you die, I’ll take my blade and kill myself. One simple thrust into the heart and it’s over. Over for you and for me. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be that hard to do.” She said. She let me go and pulled her switchblade out of her pocket, staring at the blade. I hit the switchblade out of her hand and pulled her to me. “I won’t go now, but I will kill him.” I whispered. I felt her nod her head and just held her for a while. “Rain, Rider, I think we should get moving. The passage is just up ahead. We should be there in about ten minutes.” Lexi said from behind us. Rain slipped out of my embrace and wiped her face. “Okay, I can’t wait to see Izzy and Malcolm.” She said happily. Just that fast, she put on her happy act. She really is a good actress.

When we got to the underground passage, which was an old hollowed out tree that went underground, Megan had become nicer to Rain. “We’re here.” Lexi said. She knocked on the wood until she found a hollow part and knocked three times. The bark fell away, and we were left looking into a dark hole. “After you.” I said to Rain. She glared at me and jumped into the tree, disappearing from sight. Megan went next, then me because Lexi wanted to go last. When I landed, I saw Megan and Rain already heading down the walkway that would take us back to WaterRush pack territory. Lexi landed behind me and I saw the tree close back up. It would have been pitch black if Lexi hadn’t been smart and brought a flashlight. We caught up with Rain and Megan and we all began walking the path back to our territory. Along the way, Rain and I finished the Oreos and ate all of my other snacks. When we got back to territory, everyone was underground. I saw everyone from WaterRush, and a lot of other people who I guessed were Izzy and Malcolm’s pack. “Rain!” Malcolm cried out. He must have been the first one to see us, because when he said Rain’s name, the whole room turned our way. “MALCOLM!” Rain screamed, running into Malcolm’s outstretched arms. I couldn’t help but get a little jealous, even though he already had a mate.

Rain’s p.o.v.

“MALCOLM!” I screamed, running and giving Malcolm a hug. “Thank God you’re okay!” Izzy said from behind Malcolm. “IZZY!” I screamed…again. As I was hugging Izzy, I saw Rider ask Malcolm to talk. As curious as I was, I decided to follow them.

Malcolm's p.o.v.

"What's up dude?" I asked Rider. He seemed tense, and when he asked me to talk, his voice was strained. "What do you think about Rain?" He asked. "What are you talking about?" I asked. I had a pretty good idea, but I couldn't believe that he would think that way. "Do you like Rain?" He asked. "What is going through your head! Rain is like a sister to me! Also, I have Jakayla! I can't believe you!" I said, turning and walking away. "Look, I'm sorry! Can you blame me for being so protective!? She got RAPED by my brother! I just want to know why you care so much!" "You want to know why I care?!" I said, whipping around to face Rider. "I care because I'm her brother! You know, it hurts when your sister was so small that she doesn't even remember she has a brother!" I yelled at him. "Malcolm, I'm sorry. I didn't know-" "Neither did I." I turned around to see Rain standing behind me with tears in her eyes. "Rain, look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I just didn't want to tell you because of what's going on!" I told her. "It's ok." She told me. "Wait. You're not mad?" I asked. "Of course not. This is awesome!" She said, running and giving me another hug. "Yea, but I think Jakayla needs to know that you're safe." I said. It was true. Jakayla told me that if I knew that Rain was back and didn't let her know a.s.a.p., things would get ugly.
