White Mist

Erica is a girl who lived on Roanoke island-an island that mysteriously disappeared. Here is my version of how 116 people who lived on Roanoke in 1585, disappeared.

5. Five

“Set out for sea.” Hugh Taylor called.

“Yes, sir.” was the reply.

“Do we have everyone?” Hugh Taylor asked.

“I think s-”I interrupted the man reporting.

“Where is Veronica White?” Several people ran off the boat with me to look. I found Veronica hiding under a bed.

“Veronica, I know you want to stay for your dad, but you will starve. Do you want him to find you dead? Look, I had to leave my family too. I joined my aunt, you can be part of our family till your father comes back.” Slowly, Veronica stood nodding. Tears slid down her face.

“Lets leave a message.” She croaked. I ran to a fence picked up a knife and carved the word CROatoan. Meanwhile, Veronica carved CRO on a tree. As we ran back to the boat I saw a few people nodding approvingly, Hugh Taylor included. Gasping for breath I listened to the cries of the crew gently guiding the ship away from the shore. All the colonists were on board. I didn’t think we were all ready, but so many people insisted we go now. The boat lurched and I grabbed the side. Then, one last time I looked at Roanoke, feeling as if I was leaving my family and home  again. The last thing I saw was the sun shining on the morning mist as a white reared in the cover of the trees. Looking into the creature’s eyes I could have sworn I heard “Goodbye.” The voice was familiar.

So there you have it, my disappearance, 116 people and me. Now you know the truth to my story. Go, tell of my change of life twice and make me appear again so that I am no longer... ‘just gone.’
