Me & Lou

Lou is very imaginative- and also kind, caring and helpful. And when she gets packed off to the countryside during the war, she finds that those qualities are important. But can she keep up the soft approach, even when panic, trouble and worry hits?

12. The Best Day-Ever!

Let me fill you in. Ida came padding into the kitchen the next morning, smiling.

"Great news!" she exclaimed. "Well it's not REALLY great or the man and his family, but... the man as sent off to war, and sadly he was killed. But we get the house!" Yes, I felt sorry for the poor man, but also incredibly happy for Ida and her family. We had a group hug, and then, when Ida switched on the radio a while later, it said that war was OVER! I actually cried, and Gwyneth and her family came bursting through the door, singing songs. Ida quickly grabbed together some food, and Gwyneth's mother helped her to move the table outside. I got busy making paper bunting saying VE! VE! and getting the children dressed in their best clothes. Then we all ran outside with relief, throwing our very own street party. Rosie hugged me, saying "Daddy's coming home!" We tucked into cakes and scones, the odd neighbour coming to join us. We all linked arms and sang Auld Lang Syne, even though it wasn't even New Year. We partied the day away, me in my silk map dress and some of Ida's heels. I flt so grown up and overjoyed- but one thing was in the back of my mind. I'd be going home soon. I escaped away from the party, silently, and crept up to my room. I gathered my things together and popped them in my suitcase, then I sat on my bed and cried.

"Hey, don't cry, darling!" I turned to see Grandpa making his way over to me. He pulled me onto his lap and gave me a hug. 'Now, it's perfectly fine to cry, so just let it out. I bet you're thinking about chug-chug-chugging back home, eh, pet? Well, don't be in any hurry. Stay another day. Meet Frankie. Have fun! But as for now, well... it's a happy day! No more war! Isn't that amazing? So unpack your things and come and have a slice of cake." I hugged him and he hugged back, then I unpacked my things, wiped my watery eyes and went downstairs. Ida smiled, and threw her arms around me- and told me that she loved me like her own little girl.

The next day, whilst Jem, Rosie and Victoria and I were eating lunch, we heard Ida scream. She was outside doing gardening, until she made that almighty noise. We all ran up to her worried- and we saw her hugging Frankie, her husband.

"DADDY!" Jem, Rosie and Victoria said together. They had a family hug, and I stayed out, awkwardly.

"Who's this?" Frankie asked, beckoning to me.

"That's Lou!" Ida smiled. "She's lovely, down here from London!" Frankie held out his arm.

"Come and join in!" He grinned. So I did, and they all actually felt like my family. We stood for ages, before heading back inside. I took a deep breath, and tried to have as much fun as possible on my last day.
