8. Axel

"Hi."

After Abbey had punch Iris and Bec, they had spread a lot of nasty rumours about her.

That she was an orphan who was so retarded had to grow up in a mental hospital, and that she still lives there.

That she had had a lobotomy but they made a mistake which made her even more retarded.

And a lot more which have her ending up retarded or even more retarded.

Abbey must have noticed that I wasn't talking to her, so she started up a conversation.

"So… how was Science?"

"Mm, alright. Rumours about you."

"What rumours?"

"Rumours that Iris and Bec are spreading. Why did you hit them?"

"Ugh, are you sticking up for them?"

"No, I just want to know what's going on."

"I got angry, okay?"

"Anything else?"

"NO."

"Okay Okay! It was just a question."

So we sat in silence on the swing until netball training started.

Since it was the last game for them this Saturday, the whole training session was playing netball games.

Abbey seemed to enjoy her time here, smiling as she trained.

After an hour, training had finished and Abbey came over as happy as ever.

"You look happy."

"Yeah, even better because Iris and Bec didn't turn up to netball training."

"Reckon your going to win this weekend?"

"It doesn't matter, as long as we have fun."

"Now that's what I wanted to hear."

"Sure."

So we walked home, talking about sports (Netball in general) and school stuff, of course avoiding talk about today.

We got to Abbey's house at about five thirty.

As soon as we got inside, Abbey rushed off to her bedroom, saying she's got work to do.

I head into the kitchen like I usually do and make a couple of BLTs for tea, I guess.

After eating mine, I took Abbey's up to her room so she could eat it.

I opened the door, seeing her surrounded by scrunched up pieces of paper.

"Hey, Abbey?"

She looks up from her pad paper and quickly flips it over, obviously not wanting me to see what was on it.

"Oh, thanks Axel. Next time I'll come down, okay?"

"Uh, sure?"

I walked back down the stairs to the kitchen, wondering what she was  doing.

It seemed harmless enough, but she's never hidden anything from me.

At about ten thirty I walked back up to her room, wanting to go to bed, knowing we have a full day of work tomorrow.

I opeed the door quietly, finding Abbey asleep on the ground next to her bed.

In her hand was the paper she was using for something.

Knowing better than to go through her stuff, I picked her up and put her on the bed.

I couldn't bring myself to get into bed with her again, so I crashed on the couch.

It wasn't very comfortable, and I kept waking up through the night.

In the end, I just stayed up.

In about two hours Abbey got up and started getting ready for school.

Homeroom was alright, daily P.E.

SOSE was quite boring, but Abbey had finished all her work, and was allowed to do whatever… again.

She chose to write again.

Maths and English went by quickly and it was the end of school before we knew it.

"Hey Axel, are you coming to the school picnic tomorrow?"

I thought about it for awhile, wondering whether it was worth it.

"Are you going?"

"Uh, yeah? Is that the answer you were looking for?"
I was actually looking forward to a day at Abbey's house with her, no school, no nothing, but I could deal with the school picnic with her.

"You always give me the right answers."

So, we headed off to our homerooms, then met back up for maths with Miss Irani, but today everyone was too bored to make fun of her accent. I turned to talk to Abbey.

"Hey, the day before yesterday you said that I could go with you to see Mrs Florington, but I didn't. Abbey, I'm concerned, and if you don't tell me what's going on, I'm going to keep being concerned."

Abbey runs a hand through her hair in a frustrated sort of fashion, and turns toward me, grabbing my hand in hers.

"I know," She looks at the ground, sounding defeated, "I just couldn't. School ends in two weeks, too."

"Don't change the subject on me! I want to know!"

I got so angry at this point that I could have slapped her, but I held back.

"What do you want to hear from me!? That I'm… SUICIDAL OR SOMETHING!?"

I snapped.

I punched Abbey fair in the stomach.

I didn't know what I was doing.

Abbey gets up, tears streaming down her face, and runs out of the classroom, clutching her stomach.

Fuming, I stomped out of the classroom, asking to go to the toilet, and walked in the opposite direction to what Abbey was going in.

"Pfft, suicidal… yeah right."
