Abbey and Axel

6. Axel

"Hey Abbey, could you, uh, open the door please?"

After about two seconds, the door opened, and Abbey was in my arms.

"What are you doing home? School hasn't finished yet."

"I faked a sickie and Mr MDT man sent me home."

"Well, don't we all feel a little closer?"

She turned on her heel and started walking up the stairs to her room.

I followed closely behind, being literally two steps behind her.

When she fell onto her bed, I took my chance.

"What's wrong Abbey?"

"Why do you need to know?"

"Because you promised."

"Nothing's wrong."

"Abbey, you don't have to be so… stoic."

"That doesn't make any sense."

"Yes it does."

"In your world, obviously."

"You have to tell me."

"…Tomorrow, come with me tomorrow to find Mrs Florington, then you might find out."

And we left it at that.

Today was Abbey's least favourite day.

Maths, English, Home Economics and Science.

"Abbey, it's time to wake up."

That's all she needed to wake up.

Whilst walking to school, we talked again.

"Oh, you'll like Science, you don't have to do anything."

"Well then, what's the point of having Science?"

"The point is to sit and do nothing."

I remember the first time I met Abbey.

She put her all into every subject and if she got something wrong, she'd go back and do it again until she got it right.

The only subject she actually does is P.E now.

She's changed a lot.

We weren't late today.

After taking Abbey to her homeroom, I walked slowly to mine and got to it just as the music started.

Homeroom was particularly boring for once.

We sat and watched YouTube videos, and Hayden picked some stupid Pop Tart Cat one.

We then got reminded that the school picnic was this Friday and that if you didn't bring a note, you won't be swimming.

We were dismissed from homeroom and headed towards Maths.

I found Abbey already seated, like usual, by herself.

She seemed pretty content with playing with her pencil.

Mrs Lovisa was away today, so instead we had Miss Irani.

She liked the few of us that didn't make fun of her Indian accent.

"Just because I have different accent, does not mean you make fun of teacher!"

Abbey got her work finished, the only one who did, and got to do whatever she wanted to.

She chose just to sit and play with her pencil.

English with Mr Parker was alright.

Nine letter word puzzles, Journal writing, reading…

Then it was Recess.

"Hey Axel," Abbey said as we walked outside, "I have netball training today after school from four to five, you don't have to stay if you don't want to…"

"I can't wait two hours for you."

"Why? Don't you want me to be there?"

"It doesn't matter anymore, okay? It's alright."

I noticed that while I was eating, that Iris and Bec were staring at us.

Recess finished, and as I was heading to Home Ec, Abbey was just standing near the door to the B block building.

"What are you doing?"

"I, uh… nevermind."
