5. Crime 5

“What?!” I felt Aiden’s eyes on me. The surprise in his voice did not surprise me. I glanced around at everyone. Mackenzie didn’t seem surprised in the slightest. She noticed I was looking at her and shrugged.

“I saw it coming. With the way you two are, I knew that there was something going on. Pregnancy was not at the top of the list but congratulations.” She gave us a smile and looked at Damien. She smiled at him and he nodded to her. There was something about to be said but what came next surprised me.

“Since we’re telling everyone everything, Mackenzie and I are…” Damien looked down at Mackenzie and she smiled, her happiness overflowing.

“We’re engaged!” She said, holding up her left hand which had a shining diamond ring on it. Giving Alex and I time to escape, Ashlynn and Aiden went to congratulate the happy couple.

Alex took my hand and pulled me out of the living room and up to my room. I sat down on my bed and he started pacing.

“What are we going to do, Alex?” I looked down at my hands and placed one on my stomach. I saw him out of the corner of my eye so I looked at him. He was crouched down in front of me, his eyes full of sincerity. He took my hands in his and started to rub them with his thumbs.

“All I know is that I’m going to stick by any decision you make. I will always be here for you and our child, until you don’t need me anymore. I will protect the both of you from anything and everything. I will not let either of you get hurt.” He gave me a small smile and I felt the tears welling up in my eyes. I was already getting the pregnancy emotions.

“What do you want to do?” I asked, my voice no louder than a whisper. He dropped my hands and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me closer to him so he could place his head on my stomach.

“Truthfully, I would love to have a child with you. I want a family with you.” His voice was quiet but every word was full of more emotion than ever imaginable. He was usually closed off about his emotions, especially ones that could change everything like this. When we did what we did, we hadn’t done it because we wanted a family. He was comforting me like he usually did and it just escalated from there. I knew exactly which case it had been. It was one that I remembered clearly. It was three months ago and I was still thought about it when I was left alone.

It was the first time we weren’t able to save someone.

We got called onto the case after the third home invasion, the first time he killed someone. He never did anything to the houses. He would break the back door’s window and walk in. He would then leave a note on the table and money to fix the window. He would always lay an unidentifiable scale on the counter, that’s why we were put on the case. Aiden concluded he was a dragon.

The note thanked the home owners and apologized for breaking the window. It wasn’t until we caught him that we understood why he did it.

We wouldn’t have realized that the murder and the break ins were related if he hadn’t left a note. He hadn’t taken anything besides the lives of a husband and wife and their three year old daughter. The note thanked them and apologized for killing them. He did not leave any money.

He had repeated this twice more until we finally figured out who it was and what his goal was. The second to last family had a special note. It thanked them, apologized, and said that the next was the last. He signed it this time. Gave us his name. No one understood why and he never explained it.

We went to his house and found his time line. It had each and every family on it. It was in a special room. He had it in order from his first break-in to his last murder. It was by that that we figured out where he was going next.

We prepared as we should, Damien was set up in the house across the street and Ashlynn and Aiden were hiding, ready to shoot him if need be. Alex and I had our vests on and jackets over so they couldn’t be seen. The plan had been for us to go up to the door, knock, and attempt to get inside.

We walked up to the door and I knocked. We looked at each other. We weren’t really sure how this would go over but we knew that it would be figured out somehow.

A man answered the door. He had been well-built. His dark brown hair cut short. I gave him a smile and Alex took my hand.

“Hello sir. I’m sorry to interrupt your evening but our car broke down we were just wondering if we could use your phone to call someone.” I continued to smile at him. He wouldn’t be able to resist the smile of a woman. I could tell.

The man nodded and stepped out of the way. His eyes were on Alex, who just nodded once at him as we walked past. The man lead us to where the phone was then walked away, mistake number one.

Alex looked around and I picked up the phone, calling Damien. He would need to know this information. I pretended to talk to him about the car and he laughed at my lame excuse. Alex started to investigate.

“Hey, it worked, didn’t it?” I said back to Damien.

“Yeah, true. What’s the inside like.” He asked.

“Not good. It would have been better if we had a spare.” I kept my eyes on the picture on the wall, waiting for Alex to let me know.

“It’s a man and a woman. Both are alive still. He’s keeping them in the living room.” Alex whispered in my ear. I nodded and pointed to the picture I had been staring at. “His parents…”

I nodded again and turned around. Standing in the doorway was the man.

“Your car is not broken down, is it.” There was not a hint of a question in his voice.

“No. We are with the FBI.” I wasn’t going to lie to him. I placed the phone down on the counter and Alex moved his hand to his waist, where is gun sat. The man got to his first.

“Don’t even think about it, Detective.” The man aimed his gun at me. Even he knew that Alex wouldn’t take the risk. He walked over and grabbed me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and pointing the gun to my temple.

“Into the living room.” He said to Alex. He obliged. I walked with the man and tried to think of a way to get out of this position without my brains being scattered around the room.

We walked into the living room and the man was dead. Alex closed his eyes. The man had his throat slit and the woman was crying next to him. She was tied to a chair and gagged. The man pulled me over to the woman and we stood behind her. The gun moved from my temple to the back of the woman’s head. The man continued to hide behind me.

“How does it feel to know that you two couldn’t save these two? How does it feel to know that you failed?!”

“No. You don’t have to do this!” I turned my head and looked at the man.

“Yes. I do. And no one can stop me.” He looked from me to Alex then down at his mother. I watched his eyes clothes and I heard two shots. I squeezed my eyes shut and covered my face with my hands. When I felt a familiar hand on my shoulder, I opened them again and dropped my hands. The mother was dead. And the man was on the ground, holding onto his right wrist. Alex was holstering his gun, his hand on my shoulder. I took a deep breath, the scent of blood entering my nose. I felt my teeth growing inside my mouth. I hadn’t fed in a while and the scent of blood wasn’t helping any.

“You go. I’ll be out with him in a minute.” I nodded to Alex and walked out of the house as quickly as I could. Once out there, my instincts trying to take over. I fought back and in the process, puked in the gross. Ashlynn and Aiden came running up to me.

“Are you alright?!” Ashlynn tried to help me up.

“Yeah. Just vampire problems.” I waved the issue away and looked at the door. “They were his parents. Both ended up dying. Alex shot him in the wrist and should be bringing him out now.” As if perfectly on cue, Alex walked out with the culprit in our anti-magic handcuffs. We had to use these to make sure that the culprit didn’t use his or her magic to get out.

The guy didn’t say a word after that. Not a single one. It was that night that Alex comforted me. It was that night that I ended up getting pregnant.

I hadn’t realized that Alex left the room until he came back in with my jacket. He had his on. “Come on. The doctor said he could see you right now.” I stood up and nodded. “You looked really distracted. What were you thinking about?”

I placed my hand on my stomach then put on my coat. “The case.” Alex knew exactly which one I was talking about. He just nodded and placed his hand on the small of my back.

We managed to get out of the house without being bombarded with questions. No one even saw us leave. Alex probably spoke to them beforehand.

We got into the care and drove to the doctor’s. To the place where our fate would be forever decided. The place where we were going to become a family. Well, more of a family. Alex reached over and took my hand as we waited in the waiting room to be called in. He brought it to his mouth and kissed it gently.

“I love you, A.” I smiled and leaned over, kissing him lightly then laying my head on his shoulder. I squeezed his hand slightly.

“I love you too, Alex.”
