3. Bedtime

I’m watching the girls be put to bed. Standing in the corner out of the way. Ms Walt bends over to kiss Fee goodnight. “Mummy there’s a girl in the corner.”

“Don’t be silly dear. There’s no one there.”

“But mummy.”

“No buts. Now go to sleep.” She smooth’s her daughter’s hair and leaves. Olivia falls asleep straight away but Fee’s still awake staring at me. “Are you real?” she asks me in a soft whisper. “Yes.” I reply. “Was that little boy I saw yesterday your brother?”

“Yes. His name’s Jamie.”

“Oh. Are you an angel or a ghost?” I don’t know how to answer that one. “I think you’re an angel. You’re too nice and pretty to be a ghost.” I smile at her and sit on the end of the bed. “Why do you say that?”

“Because ghosts clank chains, and ooze blood, and scream and throw stuff.” I laugh. “Why can’t mummy see you?”

“I don’t know. Tommy can because he’s a baby. But I don’t know why you still can. Maybe you’ve got a sixth sense.” She looks thoughtful. “I suppose.” she starts to yawn. “Come on now. You should go to sleep.”

“I want to talk to you some more.” I smooth her cheek. “We can talk tomorrow. Now go to sleep.” I stand up to leave. “Can I ask you one more question?”

“One more.”

“What’s your name?”

“Diana.” She nods and closes her eyes. I tiptoe down the stairs and find my way to the basement. “Where were you!” he yells accusingly. “I was watching the family. Now hush now. It’s time for bed.” I sit down cross legged on the floor as he lays his head in my lap.

“Where’s your brother?”

“Upstairs.” I reply. “That’s good.” He went to the window and peered round the curtains. Something was bothering me but I couldn’t put a finger on what. “Are you ok?” I asked. “I’m fine. Thank you for asking.” I smiled at him. But that niggling feeling wouldn’t go.
