Unsustainable

Everything has changed. A load of EAHLF's (Energy Adapted Human Life Forms) have taken over when everything is destroyed. Lilienna is forced to help the human race continue from where it left off when the destructive energy wave passes through. The normal routine of the people dying, then being saved is broken and the long road to recovery is ahead. But is the power plant the only place where the energy can be stored? Are there other places or is it UNSUSTAINABLE....

8. Energy

I wasn't sure what to believe. What these girls were saying seemed to fit every thing that had happened, even the crazy boy knew what he was talking about. I wasn't shocked, that was odd; I guess I was just expecting everything that was coming to me. I hadn't said anything about the lady I had seen on the TV or what she had said. Should I? Everything was getting too much. I had to go for a walk as the burning sensation in my limbs had subsided quite dramatically.

"I need to go for a walk," I said simply and flatly.

"No! You have to stay here!" cried Eva.

"Let her go. She probably needs some time to contemplate this." Mai was right, I did need some time, but not to contemplate what I just been told. I wanted to figure out what all of this meant all together before I told them and if I couldn't figure it out then I would ask them to help me, after all they said this had happened a few times before.

I didn't know where I was going at all. The girls were right, everything had changed. The landscape was so, I didn't know how to describe it, it was just... missing. And in some places, missing all together. Something joined in my head. I remembered all of what that lady had said on that TV. Most of it was hard to decipher but what I heard was:

All natural and technological processes

Proceed in such a way

The availability of the remaining energy decreases

In all energy exchanges

If no energy enters or ends an isolated system

The end should be a vast system increases

Energy continuously flows from in concentrated

To become dispersed...

Spread out ...

Wasted and useless

New energy cannot be created and high grade energy  being destroyed

An economy based of endless growth is

UNSUSTAINABLE

The fundamental laws of aerodynamics

Will place fixed laws on technological innovation and human advancement

In an isolated system

The entribute can only increase

A species set on endless growth is

UNSUSTAINABLE

I had to go back, if I didn't tell the others this they wouldn't know what to do. I had spent too long hiding this information, I should have told them by now, it's too careless not to. Survival? Ha! That wasn't survival, that was hunger, thirst and NOT wanting to die taking control of me. No, survival was working together, working with what you had. Survival was victory.

Marcus didn't know what to do, he hadn't moved for fear of falling off of this tall, thin, pile of sand. If he fell off, he would fall to nothing-ness, falling to his doom. Who was that he could see? Was it...? Yes it was! It was that new girl! He waved and shouted and after about five minutes, she noticed him.

"WHAT, are you doing there?" she asked.

"I'm stuck please help me. Just pull me away."

"And how do I do that?" Of course she didn't know now to use the energy!

"Do you know what energy is?"

"Yes. But I don't know what to do with it. Any way, if I could I wouldn't help you because you were so mean to Woof! Look, why are you making me save you when you can obviously do it yourself?"

     "I can't. If I move I'll fall off!"

     "Well don't move then!"

"I have to! ARGGH!!! You don't get it do you? You're so... I don't know! You're really annoying!!" Marcus knew he could sometimes get a little angry. Well maybe not a little. "I'm sorry. I'll tell you what you have to do."

     "You're horrible-"

"I know." He butted into what she was going to say. "At least give me a chance to change. If you help me, I promise you I will change." She obviously wasn't sure. Marcus tried to make her feel more comfortable. "My name is Marcus. I am the second official EAHLF and I spent my last life working at a super market." He hoped it would work.

"Really? Huh. My name's Lilienna. And that's it. I'm just Lilienna. Nothing else."

"Oh come on, you must have done something!" A small laugh escaped from her as he had said it.

     "Nope."

"Well, now you're the fifth ever EAHLF. That's something to be proud of."

"I guess so." She was eager to stop talking about herself so she changed the subject. "So... What do I have to do?"

"Okay this may sound weird-" She butted into him like he had done to her.

"What isn't weird with this place?" The question was rhetorical.

"Reach out with your mind," he instructed.

"How? Do I just, okay I think I've done it! What am I looking for?"

"Energy. It feels like, well it... it buzzes... and hums. It's like a vast line, lying across your mind. Can you feel it?"

     "Yes."

"Then grab it and pull it as close to you as you can, it's easier if you close your eyes; you can concentrate better then." She did as she was instructed.

"Now think about what you want to do which is to lift me up and to carefully place me beside yourself. You think you can do that? As long as you concentrate for long enough it should work. If not then I'm dead. No pressure or anything." When she gave him a funny look he apologized. Ever, ever so slightly, Lilienna lifted him up and just carefully moved him forwards. At one point she almost dropped the energy and he slipped ever so slightly, they had both screamed quite loudly then, but altogether she was pretty good at using energy.

"Thanks! If you do that every time you use the energy, then you will be very strong indeed! But don't ever use it unless we say. As you probably know, the energy is running very, very low and if you use it all, we are doomed and we will all die. That is the only thing that can kill us. Well, that and falling down the craters. I don't even know how they were formed."

"I think I might. Is, by any chance the ground made of energy? Unsustainable energy perhaps?"
