8. The Forgotten Sacrifice

Children playing in the park
Where lifetimes ago,
Men lined up row upon row
Preparing for the hollow sacrifice.

They climb effortlessly
Up the creaking ladders,
Ready for their long descent-
Some slide graciously down,
Others land face first
Into the mud,
Where once doomed men stood
Fighting a War that wasn't theirs to fight.

Mothers sit on benches
Keeping close surveillance
On their offspring,
Paying little notice
To the fact
They sit where other men
Were lay to rest on that
"brave August day",
Here and now, where children play,
Unaware of body after body
Decomposed below them.
