Crystal Waters

Topaz and Sapphire are for the most part two average sisters. They lived with their Mom and Dad in a wealthy home. One day, they came home to their mom sobbing, all her belongings gone. Their father had disappeared and taken all of their money. Later that year, their mom went missing. Not because she left, but because she was killed. They want to get revenge. One more thing,

They're Mermaids.

21. Mixed Emotions

I hear a commotion on the other side of the bar and push through the curious land-dwellers to figure out what's going on. I see Sapphire, bruised and bloody, laying on the ground, nursing a cut on her cheek while fingering her dagger nervously. Marius is standing over some unconscious guy. He catches my gaze and points to Sapphire. I nod. He picks her up while I set off to look for Dakota. I finally see her, a bunch of guys flirting with her. When she spots me, she sighs in relief and rushes over.

"What happened? I heard a bunch of commotion then saw Marius run off. But those guys wouldn't let me leave," She snorts in disgust.

"I'll tell you later. We gotta get out of here," I grab her hand, pushing through the crowds and make it to the back exit. We break off into a light jog, occasionally tripping with our legs and make it back to the cave. Marius has a first aid kit out, helping Saph with her wounds. Saph has a dreamy look in her eyes, partly from Marius, partly from the meds. Ok, I'll admit, Marius isn't that bad, but he still tried to kill me and now my sister is falling head over heels for him. This day just keeps getting better and better.

"Where'd you get that first aid kit?" I ask Marius.

"Knew I would need it, going around with you two," Sapphire giggles and touches him playfully on his nose.

"Sapphire," I call in a sweet voice. "How are you feeling?"

"Better, now that he saved me," She points to Marius and sighs.

"Okayyy. Marius can I talk to you for a second?" I say through clenched teeth.

"Don't be long," Saph calls in a sing-song voice as we walk behind the kelp curtain.

"What did you do to her? She's all dreamy and giggly. That is not my sister, and if you think she likes you, you're way off."

"Chill, Topaz. I just gave her something called 'Laughing Gas'. It eases the pain a little. The whole girl in love thing? Yea, that's just my charm." He gives me a smug grin and I punch him in the arm.

"Cut it out. Thanks for saving her and everything, but from now on, Ill take care of her thank you very much." I walk out frustratedly and sit next to Saph.

"Alright Sapphire. We're going to find an inn to stay at, where you can heal so we can go get Arsenal. Does that sound good?"

"Very good," She giggles again.

I hope this medicine wears off soon, otherwise it's going to be a long trip, I think sullenly.

After a few hours of resting in the cave, Sapphire is ready to go. About halfway up the cave stairs, Dakota cries out.

"What's wrong? Did you hurt your leg?" I ask.

"No, my legs are, are tingling? I don't know how to explain it. Ahhhh," She falls and lands on one of the steps.

Marius groans, "It's the side effects. Remember Joe said that every few hours our tails will grow back for a minute or so."

I hear a flop and judging from Dakota's wide-eyed stare, I'm guessing her tail came back. Sapphire, leaning against the wall falls down too.

Great, I think, as the tingling feeling returns and I am forced to sit down. Within a minute, we all have our tails back.

"If we stay here any longer, we'll attract every photographer in a five mile radius. If our legs don't come back in thirty seconds we'll go back to the cave to wait it out." Marius says.

"Hey, my legs are back!" Dakota stands up and stretches.

"Yay! Me too!" Most of the side effects are worn off, but Sapphire is still bubbly.

"Here we go again," I grumble and watch as my golden orange tail turns back into two legs. Surprisingly, our clothes are still on. "Alright guys, let's get to an inn before this happens again."

Everyone is motivated by not being caught so our pace quickens. Eventually, we reach a small motel and check in. Dakota and Marius each have their own rooms while Saph and I share one.

"I wonder how Kona and Star are doing," I ask thoughtfully. When we had to go on land I found a dolphin boarding place and told the mermaid who runs it that we might be gone for a while. Luckily, the price was relatively cheap and it had huge kelp forests for the dolphins to swim around and hunt. They get fed minnows daily.

"I'm sure they're fine. Having a grand old time. Much better than us. Well, I'm gonna get some rest, I'm exhausted." Sapphire turns over and is out instantly.

I sit there thinking. About Neptune, our home, Arsenal, Marius. I honestly don't know what to think about Marius. One day he tries to kill me, the next he saves my sister and she falls for him. I'm glad he's fighting with us and not against us though, I would not like to have to fight him in a battle. I think back to the bar. When Marius was helping Saph up. That unconscious man, something looked familiar, although he was pretty beaten up. I snap my fingers and sit straight up in bed. I know that face. I know him.

That was Arsenal.
