Crystal Waters

Topaz and Sapphire are for the most part two average sisters. They lived with their Mom and Dad in a wealthy home. One day, they came home to their mom sobbing, all her belongings gone. Their father had disappeared and taken all of their money. Later that year, their mom went missing. Not because she left, but because she was killed. They want to get revenge. One more thing,

They're Mermaids.

22. Into the Lion's Den

Ow. Errr.... that hurts! I sit up groggily, and just about everything hurts. My face, red and swollen is throbbing, and as I look down at my feet, I gasp. They are all scraped and bloody. Man, what did I do last night? I can hardly remember a thing! Just fighting, being carried back into the cave, then nothing. Maybe Topaz knows. I look over to where she lay on her side, her sides rising and falling regularly with her even breathing. Oh well. I pull my covers back, and having slept in my clothes, decide to shower.

I turn on the water and step in...when I remember something. Joe told us not to touch water on land or else we'll get our tails again! I look up in exasperation as I slip and land with a thud, hitting my already damaged head on the shower door. At least my feet have stopped hurting. Grimacing, I push the door open, and slide out of the shower. That's when the door of our room lets out a small beep and a click to let us know that someone has opened it. Crap! The cleaning lady! I lunge for the towel that is hanging on a hook under the sink then start rubbing frantically at my tail. Just as the cleaning lady opens the door, I get my legs back. That was close. Too close.

"Hi, er... can we have a few more hours, please?" I ask awkwardly.

"Okay, be back soon." She replies.

Topaz is still fast asleep, so I decide to proceed with my plan. I leave our quaint room, and walk down the hall to room number 211. Next, I knock at the door, and enter when the familiar voice replies.

          "Hey." I breathe.

"Something wrong? How are you feeling?" Dakota asks.

"No, just a close call with the cleaning lady. Oh and I feel like dolphin dung. Also, I was wondering what happened last night."

          "Oh," Dakota giggles. "that."

"Yeah, what did I do?! Did I say something stupid?!"

"Um, yeah. Kinda a lot of things."

          I groan. "Like...?"

"Well, you were all lovey-dovey with Marius and-"

"WHAT?!" I cut her off. I need to blow off some steam. I run out of her room, and decide to go for a walk, and get my feelings sorted out. I mean, I like Marius, a lot. But, do I really love him? Aahg! This is stupid! Why can't things just go back to the way they were with just me and Topaz? As soon as I say that inwardly, I notice something. Er, more like someone. There is a man in a brown trench coat, collar popped up. That looks suspicious. I decide to follow him, to see where he is going. He walks in meaningless circles, probably in the hopes of throwing anyone off that was following him, but he doesn't know how I've navigated through kelp forests or dove through deep, twisting caverns with the only light coming from the bioluminescent algae. After the man is sure that no one is following him, he quickly steps into an alley. Me, being the curious mermaid that I am, stupidly follow him. As soon as I make that first step I feel a rough hand around my mouth.

"Say anything and I'll slit your throat," The man holds a knife to my neck. "Oh and your precious sister's too." He calls to one of his cronies and stands in front of me so I can see him. I recognize him as the man who was drunk and started beating me in the bar. He is also the brown trench coat man. Something else is familiar too, though I can't put my finger on it. But I know, somehow, I've met him before. I struggle in the rock-like grip and flail around helplessly. "It's no use. We've got you, and we can use you as bait to get your sister," Brown Coat smiles evilly, I notice he has really crooked and yellow teeth.

"You'll never get my sister!" I spit.

"Little sisters are always dumber than the older ones, and you walked right into my trap. Besides, Topaz was never a good student in mer-school. Always getting in trouble, getting sent to the office, I received so many notes about her at home. So tiresome. Remember me, Sapphire?" I gasp. No, no, no. This can't be happening. Tears stream down my face. No, Sapphire be tough. Arsenal. That name has haunted my dreams since he left us and killed mom. I've cried for nights on end, putting on a tough shell to mask my pain. Going hunting with Topaz to get my mind off things. I guess that's why I ran away, tired of Neptune forbidding us to hunt. Stuck up in our richly decorated Princess rooms. Not being able to be free and leave my emotions behind.

Arsenal starts cackling, the same laugh that haunts me. "Lock her up." He spits. Arsenal's henchmen throw me into a cell, similar to the ones Neptune uses to house criminals in his kingdom. The bars are rusty, the only light source a flickering lightbulb, and the smell of rotting flesh is strong and as pungent as ever.

"Jeez. Hey, old man. You think you'd be able to afford a better crib, seeing as you murder people all over the world then steal their money!" I taunt. A burning sensation flashes across my cheek. I screech in agony. Tenderly I run my fingers across where the knife had opened my flesh. I can already feel the blood dripping down my cheek. Only my hidden tears flow faster.
