Crystal Waters

Topaz and Sapphire are for the most part two average sisters. They lived with their Mom and Dad in a wealthy home. One day, they came home to their mom sobbing, all her belongings gone. Their father had disappeared and taken all of their money. Later that year, their mom went missing. Not because she left, but because she was killed. They want to get revenge. One more thing,

They're Mermaids.

26. A Knock at the Door

Sapphire

When Joe poured that purple liquid on Marius' side, I knew he'd be in pain, but not this much pain. I hold his hand nervously, waiting for Joe's reaction. The driftwood in Marius' mouth is getting thin from all of the pressure. I can see the vein popping out on his neck, and he screams through the wood in his mouth. Joe is just standing there, watching, with his hand on his chin.

"What are you doing?!" I shout at him, not even noticing that Marius was calming down. "He's in pain, do something!"

"I'm... okay." Marius struggles to say.

I exhale and blow out my cheeks in relief. "Thank God! I was so nervous..." I trail off, glad for the fact that Marius is safe.

"How long have we been gone from Neptune?" Topaz asks absentmindedly.

"I don't know, maybe two months?" I can't wait to get back to the Palace and tell Neptune all about our adventures. Now he'll let us go hunting, if we can survive two months against a crazy psychopath with the whole ocean looking for us, we can survive a few hours in a kelp forest. Although, I wouldn't count on him being too happy about Marius."

Topaz sighs sadly, "I miss home."

I touch her arm lightly, "Me too, T. Me too." I say, using my childhood nickname for Topaz.

That night, we stay at Joe's shack. As I lay sound asleep, I hear a loud pounding on the door. Panicked, I sit up, gripping onto my dagger, and inch my way towards the door.

"Wh-who is it?" I ask, my voice slightly shaking.

"Neptune's chief officer. Open up, or face the penalty of His Highness." A rough, deep voice commanded.

I exhaled in relief, then opened the door. "Hello." I said, "What brings you to these parts?" I ask calmly, and with an air of formality that I haven't used in so long.

"Princess Sapphire!" He said, and the whole squad of guards knelt at Joe's doorstep.

"What's going on?!" Joe pushes me aside, blindly swinging a frying pan like a crazy merman, which he is. This wakes up Marius, who hurries to see what the commotion is, also gripping his knife.

"You know what? Since we all seem to be having a doorway party, I'll go get Topaz." I said, then entered the dark room where Topaz was sleeping.

"Hey, wake up. Neptune's men found us." I say, shaking her shoulder.

"What?!" She asks, fully awake within a few seconds.

"Don't worry, they can escort us home."

The two of us made our way back to where everyone was hanging out.

"We've come to take you home." The chief said.

"And you're welcome to." That was when I heard a squeak in greeting from somewhere in the back of the group. "Kona! Star!" I screech then push through all the mermen. After giving Kona a brief hug, I return to my post at the door.

"Princess, we need to leave now." He said.

"Now? I dunno, Marius, are you okay to travel?" I ask, then glance at the scar on his side, now completely healed.

"I'm always ready." He answers, his finger tracing the scar of my own.

"At least let me give you some rations to help you on your journey." Joe offered.

"No time. We're under strict orders that once we locate the Princesses, we're to return them to Neptune immediately." Chief replied sternly.

Topaz spun around and pulled Joe into a tight hug. "Thank you Joe, for everything. And, we'll be okay. We're in good hands."

I walked up to the old chemist and said my farewell, "And thanks for healing Marius and for being there for Dakota." As I say the name of our fallen friend, I feel like I am going to cry.

Taking one last glance behind me, I mount Kona, and sigh. This was going to be a long journey home.

After many weeks on the road, it felt surreal to be standing here, looking up at the coral gates to Neptune's domain. Once word spread that we had arrived, Melonie rushed out and tackled us in a hug. She didn't say anything, but the look on her face was worth more than words. A feast was prepared in our honor, but it wasn't after a while that we saw Neptune. Topaz, Marius and I stood before the throne room doors, waiting to see how Neptune would react.
