Project: Feral

The U.S.A. been devastated by a virus that has been in movies, books and stories for centuries. some say it came in a flash, some say it was slowly crawling towards them as if they saw it coming. The world has sealed and quarantined the entire US continent, but for how long will the virus stay there? Whenever someone thinks of the U.S.A. they think of the horrifying creatures that now tread on its streets and roads... These creatures are, as some say, the minions of the Devil himself, and some blame the world and its people for their own mistake. One man stands in the way of this virus, only one. The virus wants to spread and grow like fungus, but this man will end the virus, or will he? Does he have what it takes to save his beloved home? Or will it all be too much for him to handle? This is a plague...This is a war. (first story)

4. New friends and enemies

I walked up to the general and asked something that I wondered why I didn’t ask before, “What are you keeping from me? And don’t play dumb general. With all due respect I had to risk getting infected TWICE to save both your daughter and your soldiers! I know there is something you’re not telling me, SO OUT WITH IT!” I yelled, rage audible in every word. “You dare question a general?” He asked sternly. “Yes I do dare! Because as I am officially a part of this military, I must know everything that’s going on if we are to win this war. Why did Sharpshooter carry explosives?” I replied immediately. “He was sent on a suicide mission to blow up an island full of zombie-animals!” The general spat back. I looked to my sides and saw Sharpshooter and Siren (Natasha) standing next to me. “Father, is this true?” Natasha asked worriedly. “Yes… I was sent there to remove the island using a prototype bomb.” Sharpshooter explained, still beat up from the experience. I held Natasha’s and Sharpshooter’s hands and took off the ground using my wings. “General, we resign. See you in hell.” I spoke before flying away from the base.

I flew us to a military convoy depot not far from here, hoping to get some transport and supplies. I putted Barry and Natasha on the ground and told them, “I will give you the ok sign as soon as I take care of the guards.” I silently flew over the fence and retracted my wings. I heard one guard coming and camouflaged myself like a chameleon. I stuck to a wall and waited for the guard to come near me. As soon as he passed I used my electric eel powers to knock him out. Still invisible, I threw the body to the middle of the depot to attract guards. Every soldier gathered and now was the time to use my roar once again. I took a deep breath in and held it. I let out an earth-shattering roar as the soldiers lay on the floor, clutching their heads. Natasha and Barry came running into the complex. They look at the soldiers amusingly. “Let me guess, your roar?” Barry asked chuckling. I simply gave him a nod and directed my attention towards the vehicles. Everything was here: Trucks, All Personal Carriers (APC), Helicopters, and even a few sports cars armed to the tires. I jumped into my first weapon of choice. It was a black BMW M3. This car was tricked out. On the sides were two rocket launchers and on the hood of the car, twin machine guns, capable to make holes in you and as an added bonus the wheel rims were mostly spiked outwards. I loved this car. Barry climbed into his favorite, a white Ferrari. The Ferrari had a machine gun as a hood ornament and two small grenade launchers on the roof, it also had double speakers built in the doors so the speaker heads were sticking out. I could hear Natasha chuckling and I saw her chose a huge transport truck. Barry and I burned rubber just to get a feel for the cars. My car bolted out the gate first. “Try and catch me!” I screamed out to them.

Barry and I had fun as we rode the blood-stained roads in search of shelter, Natasha following ever so slightly. We stopped near a small town to get some gas and find food. We stopped dead in our tracks as we saw zombies shuffling around in the distance. Barry got his sniper rifle out as I readied my octopi-whip. “Barry, do you want to do the honors?” Natasha asked pulling out her dual pistols. “With pleasure.” He replied. I saw Barry pulled the trigger, heard a big bang and saw one dead zombie. Technically they are dead, but who cares. The zombies looked at us blankly as I waited for the usual hiss and run. The zombies ran fast, and I mean faster than usual, towards us. Barry flicked a switch on his rifle and it shot nonstop shots of bullets. I looked at him confused. “Special setting I requested from the military, perfect for an occasion like this.” He murmured. I swung my arm out and hit a zombie on its forehead. With our backs facing each other we fought on for hours.

The zombies quickly outnumbered us. We all were back-to-back to fend off what we can. In the distance I heard a beeping noise, from a car. Bullets fired from the direction of the noise. A huge snow-plough truck pushed all the zombies out of the way. The truck stopped. A girl, looks about the age of 14, on the back of the truck cocked her gun and yelled, “We’ll take it from here!” The snow-plough somehow retracted back into the truck and a few short tubes came out. I watched in marvel as the tubes were actually a freaking flamethrower! Every single zombie turned to torches as the fire engulfed horde after horde. Without a second thought, I jumped into my BMW and fired my car’s missiles and guns. Barry also joined in on the fun. Every zombie was scorched to a crisp, even the dried blood was mow reduced to smoldering ash. “Follow us!” The girl yelled again. I used my tentacle arm to lift Natasha into my car… The truck Natasha chose was slower than a rhino shot by a strong anesthetic. We high-tailed out of the town and onto the open road so we can follow our rescuers.

For the past few hours it was peaceful a drive. It’s ironic; Barry and I have the lightest and possibly fastest cars in the world, but we can’t even keep up with a ten-ton fire-spewing truck.

We followed the truck to the peak of some mountain. There was an old mining cave right in front of us. I stepped out my car and looked at it amusingly. “Really, Batman also lived in a cave, what are you guys? Some sort of mini Batmen?” I joked. The girl looked at me sternly and then suddenly she jumped all over the place. She was REALLY short. I bet it will only take about two rulers to measure her height. “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! You guys were awesome out there!”She squealed out. “Umm… thanks?” I was out of words. The girl jumped onto my back and pulled on my hair and asking, “Who are you? What is your skill or power? Will you be my friend? Why are you making weird faces?” I lifted her off, more like threw her off. “My name is Jake Anderson; I got the powers of any and every animal and you were pulling my hair, so you’re not my friend.” I told her, making my hair an organized unorganized style. This girl is a real annoyance. I even saw her jump on Natasha and Barry for a few times. A man about 24 years old came out of the truck and held out his hand. I shook it and told him my name to make sure he will remember. “My name is Wyatt Berkley, a former fighter pilot.” He introduced himself. “Want to see our little den?” he asked. He escorted us into the cave.

I was simply stunned. It was like a whole new world was in front of me. I saw huge boulders on each other acting as support beams, homesteads as big as your average mansion, Water mills taking water and putting it in huge dams and much, much more. There was a huge tower in the middle of the cave-like city. I pointed towards it and looked at that Berkley guy and asked him, “Let me guess, that tower over there is your base of operations, right?” He looked at me and replied, “How did you figure that out? Let me take you there and then you can get settled.” He walked in front of us as we all cleared a bridge. Under the bridge is a deep hole.  The bridge closed behind us. “As you can see we live inside a hollow mountain, but water was found and despite the mountain blocking the sun, we created a glass that looks like mountain on the outside, but it lets the light come through to our plants on the inside. Our whole city is powered by the sun, the water and geo-thermal energy. The glass also acts as solar panels if you complete the circuit with a piece of metal wires.” He kept explaining, “The water mills create kinetic energy that moves a huge turbine and in turn gives electricity. We have heat absorbers for the geo-thermal power and we also invented a machine that turns all methane and other poisonous gases into oxygen. We get all our metal and other stuff from mining and using an experimental device that creates rocks and all the metals inside it.” He spoke with high confidence. These mountain-people are geniuses. One question, two actually, was swirling in my mind and I just had to ask. I found my voice and asked, “How do you people remain so calm if there are zombies out there?” He replied almost instantly, “Because the military are doing some of the work and we have defenses nobody, dead or alive, can penetrate or destroy. We’re not hiding, but conserving people so that after this nightmare is over, we can re-populate. Who you see here are people who have no disease, no virus; they are perfectly healthy. When all of this, this war with the zombies, is over, we can start anew disease-free, no HIV or AIDS, no STD and no zombie-virus.” “And what will happen if we can’t win this war with the undead?” That was my next question. He stopped walking, turned his head slightly and spoke in a very low voice, “Then there is no more hope for humanity.” I can’t explain how intimidating he is when his voice is that low and serious. Will we even allow the destruction of our race? I don’t think so. I will fight until my last breath before even considering the end of humanity, and so will the rest of us. This war is going to end, and we humans will make sure we come out on top; we have done that before by showing that HIV and AIDS can be cured.

We reached the tower and stepped into an elevator. In a matter of seconds we reached the very top of the tower and walked out of the confined space. He showed us every part of the tower. He walked out to his commander-like chair and sat. He looked at us and said, “Each of you will have your own rooms and when you need anything, we will supply.” Another person escorted Barry, Natasha and I to the elevator. While the elevator went down I saw the guard staring at Natasha’s bottom in a very rude way. He then looked at me and I gave him a very deep, threatening growl, daggers showing in my eyes. I could sense his fear while he began sweating. Barry and I shared a high-five as we watched the guard stumbled out of the elevator when it opened. We got to our rooms, seeing it was all attached to the mountain’s wall in a row.

I walked in and immediately took a shower. The cold water hitting my warm body was very refreshing. I took out my pajama shorts and changed into them. Laying my battle suit on a chair, I crawled into bed and turned off the light. There was a problem, I couldn’t sleep. I lay on my back and closed my eyes, hoping I would fall asleep. No use. I wanted to stand up, but when my door opened I quickly pretended to be asleep. I heard Natasha’s voice speak, “Jake, are you asleep?” I didn’t answer, still pretending to be asleep. I wonder what she wants. I would have guessed she would have fallen asleep by now. My answer became obvious as I heard her next sentence, “Jake, I hope you are asleep, because I can’t say it if you are awake. Jake, I can’t explain it but… I know it’s wrong to have feelings for my dead sister’s boyfriend, but I can’t explain it. Jake, I really like you more than I should and that’s why I can’t say it if you’re awake, I’m scared you are still attached to Jenifer. Maybe I would one day say how much I like you. Goodnight.” I could feel her lips press against my forehead. I heard the door close. My mind felt like it was a smoothie for the zombies. Is she serious? Am I still in love with my deceased (probably undead) girlfriend? Or am I feeling attracted to the beautiful redhead that just sort of confessed? My heart rate increased as my mind was still processing the information. I finally got it all sorted out. I am in love with Natasha, no doubt. I found myself falling asleep as I am finally brought at ease.

I woke up bright and early as the light shined through the fabric of the curtains. I took a real quick shower and changed into my battle suit. I made myself breakfast. Yeah that’s right, I know how to cook, and everyone does. I made scrambled eggs with a light salad. I ate my delicious self-made meal. I took the dishes and put into the washer. I walked out of my room with the brightest of smiles.

Today is going to be a really great day.

I walked over to Natasha’s room, which was right next to mine, and opened the door. I wasn’t surprised to find her still asleep. I silently walked over to her and whispered, “Wake up.” She didn’t even move. I tried and tried again, but to no avail. A very naughty idea came to my mind. I walked over to Barry’s room and waked him up, letting him in on the plan. Yet again, I walked into Natasha’s room to still find her asleep. She looked so peaceful… for now. I turned my nose into an elephant trumpet and readied myself. I took a few steps to the left and took a deep breath. I played on my trumpet the usual scout ‘bright and early’ call as loud as I could. I saw Natasha jump out of her and rush out her door screaming bloody murder. She came back in with her face covered with whipped cream. I fell onto the floor literally laughing my butt off. Her face was PRICELESS! She looked at me annoyingly. “Really? You and Barry had nothing else to do than to prank me?” I couldn’t even answer her as I kept laughing. I regained my composure and answered, “What? I couldn’t get you to wake up, so I ‘improvised’ a little.” She also started to laugh. Barry walked in and joined. We didn’t share a laugh since we were at the military base. A few moments later Natasha shoved Barry and me out of her room so she can change into her battle suit. I stared intently at the wall. “And don’t even try to use x-ray to peep in on me while I change Jake, I’m smart enough to figure out what you’re thinking.” She said. I mumble a curse word. Barry chuckled and retreated back to his room before I could land a punch on him.

The three of us looked around the underground city. It was beautiful, huge and showed dedication and hard work; everything the military fails at. I can’t wait to hear from Wyatt again. Maybe he got a mission for us. We found our way to the elevator of the tower again. I locked eyes with the same guard I scared yesterday. He tried so desperately not to squirm. Barry and I chuckled again. We reached the top of the tower. The door opened and we stepped out. Wyatt turned around and as if he practiced, he spoke, “Good morning. I didn’t get the chance to tell you my call name. I am known as commander Blade. I have about 8 knives on me and I’m an expert fighting with bladed weaponry. Today you three have the day off, tomorrow each of you will be assigned independent mission against threats. That is all, you are dismissed.” We walked back to the elevator as it began its decent.

We walked out. Barry was the first to speak, “Alright guys see you later. I saw a cute girl and I am going to see if she is interested.” He ran off. Natasha looked at me and said, “His chances on scale of 1 to 10 are ranging from at least one and a half to at most five.” I smiled and asked, “And my chances with you?” She blushed a bit and answered, “Almost nine, if you can catch me animal boy.” With that she ran off. I smirked and ran to her. She keeps laughing as I try my best to catch her. She jumps onto a few boxes, acting like stairs. I saw her figure disappear as she jumped onto the roof. I let my wings pop out and soar onto the rooftop where Natasha was a few seconds ago. I can see her jumping from rooftop to rooftop. I simply flew over them, but she was still faster than me for some reason.

She climbed up a ladder and began to go higher and higher. I saw her jumping off to the ground again. I followed my instincts and chased after her. The whole street was secluded. I saw her turning left near a few pillars. I ran through the pillars instead of around them like she did. I camouflaged myself to look like the pillar. When I saw her I trapped her in my arms. She didn’t struggle, she did the opposite. She hugged me and then pushed me away. I stumbled back until I hit my head on the pillar behind me. She walked over and kissed me. This is the single greatest day in my life. She pulled back and spoke, “Let’s get back to our rooms. Our armor isn’t exactly ideal for a jog.” I nodded and we raced. We were almost there and I was in the lead. At the corner from my eye I saw shadowy figure. It was staring at me.

Before I knew it Natasha jumped over me and I lost sight of the shadow. I came up to Natasha as she was jumping from joy. “Natasha 1, Jake 0.” She exclaimed. I kept a straight face, pondering about the shadow. “Is something wrong?” She asked. “I saw a shadow, a manly figure. I couldn’t describe him, I only saw his eyes. It was as white as snow.” I told her. She looked scared. “You saw him too?” She asked. I wonder if she also saw him, maybe it is an enemy? “Do you know him?” I asked a question of my own. She looked at my eyes. In her eyes I saw both fear and worry. “I don’t know him personally, but he is called the ‘Soul Catcher’. People say he catches the souls when a person dies and they become mindless slaves of his. He even kills people himself if they are next on his list. I had a dream and he was there. The only description of him is his snow white eyes and that he lurks in the shadows. He told me he has taken my sister’s soul and that I’m next on his list. He told me I was going to die, even if he has to kill me. Just knowing he can get to me here, dreams or not, I just can’t fall asleep. I am too scared.” She said with a few tears running down her cheek. If he is here, he is going to deal with me. He has no right to scare her. “Don’t worry.”  I said, pulling her into a warming hug. “I won’t let him get to you Natasha. Whoever he is, he is going to get through me to get you. This ‘Soul Catcher’ is not going to hurt a hair on your head. I think you should stay with me in my room, so I can make sure he is not going to hurt you. You will be safe with me.” She cried onto my shoulder for a while. I led her into my room and I cooked for her.

We ate dinner. Natasha looked really beautiful under the dim lights of my room. “Can I go get my clothing and stuff from my room?” She asked out of the blue. “You can, but you should be careful, he can show up at any given time.” She nodded and left the room. A few moments later she returned with a luggage bag. I showed her to the bathroom and waited for her outside. She came out and I looked at her. She wore an over-sized t-shirt that went down to her mid-calves. I entered the bathroom. I took a shower and changed into my pajamas. I lazily walked over my bedroom. Natasha was sitting cross-legged on my bed. I sat down in front of her. “Don’t be concerned Natasha; he can’t get you when I’m here.” I said to her reassuringly. She doesn’t look convinced. “Jake, I appreciate you trying to help, but I just don’t know if you really want to go through all this.” I placed my hand on her shoulder and said, “I want to protect you. I have feelings for you and I don’t want you getting hurt.” We didn’t notice we were drawing closer until we were centimeters away. She kissed me again. The rest of the night was a blank.

I woke up the next day and looked around. All was quiet. I smelled food and almost drifted towards the lovely aroma. I walked in to the kitchen and saw Natasha preparing breakfast. “Good morning.” She said in a happy voice. I smiled, walked over to her and kissed her on the forehead. “Good morning.” I replied. “Did you see the Soul Catcher last night?” I asked. She shook her head and replied, “No, I’m glad you suggested that I should sleep in your room, your bed is surprisingly more comfortable than mine. Let’s not mention what we did last night to Barry or anyone, at least not yet anyway. ” The memories of last night came back to me like gentle flow. “Can we tell him that we are a couple now?” I asked. She laughed and said, “Of course. I think he would be happy.”

After Natasha and I finished breakfast, we walked out. I saw Barry walking up to us. “Hey guys, how is it going?” He asked. Natasha and I both replied and in unison, “Nothing.” “How did it go with trying to ask the girl if she likes you?” Natasha asked Barry. He replied happily, “Great, got her address and if I don’t have a lot of work, I can go visit her. How about you guys? I know there’s something between you two.” “If you must know, we got together last night.” I spoke with confidence. He congratulated us. I saw something, something very faint. I focused my vision and saw a type of laser sight. Using my chameleon eyes, my left eye finds where the laser was pointing to, while the other eye finds the source from where it was coming from. I found that the laser sight was pointed to Barry’s head and it was coming from a shadow that showed snow white eyes. I reacted quickly. “Barry, watch out!” I yelled, pushing him out of the way. I felt something enter into my body with a load BANG. I think I was shot, sure felt like it. I grasped where I felt the pain was intense. I looked at my hand and saw it was covered in blood. I fell onto my side on the ground and blacked out.

3rd person point of view

Jake fell to the ground, landing with a thud. He was shot in the side of his head, possibly a kill shot. Natasha screamed and tried not to cry. It wasn’t helping. “Jake? JAKE?” she yelled trying to wake him up, tears running down her cheeks. Jake let out a faint noise. “I’m going to get Blade and a few medics, try and stop him from bleeding out; maybe it is not too late.” Barry said turning and heading towards the Tower. Natasha ripped a piece of cloth from a nearby stand and wrapped it around Jake’s wound. She made sure it was tight enough to keep the blood from flowing out. She used her CPR lessons to either keep him alive or wake him up. She pressed on his chest and gave him mouth-to-mouth. She frantically checked his pulse. It was fading. “Somebody please help!” She yelled out to anyone listening... no response. Blade showed up along with some medics. “Get him on the stretcher! Take him to the nearest hospital!” Wyatt exclaimed. He walked over to Natasha and asked, “What happened?” “I don’t know, it looks like he was shot. I didn’t see who did it, but Jake might have got a glimpse of who he was.” Natasha spoke with complete sorrow. Blade nodded and guided Natasha to the hospital Jake was taken to.

Blade, Barry and Natasha waited outside of the operating theatre. A doctor came out. Natasha stood up and asked, “How is he?” The doctor replied, “He is alive, thanks to his healing abilities but he is in coma, possibly suffered amnesia.” Natasha was feeling mixed emotions. She was happy because Jake was alive, but at the same time sad that he won’t remember anything and also furious at who would do such a thing. Barry’s voice came out low and dead serious, “Whoever tried to kill me, killed Jake instead, my best friend. I should have died, not him, the world needs him… We need him. I am going to find out who did it and kill him with my cold, bare hands.” Natasha and Blade made the same promise. They are going to avenge their friend, one way or the other.
