Surprises and Secrets

Meg has always lived an average life. She was an normal teenager. She had good grades. She cleaned up her room. She ate her vegetables. She had a normal family. Until one day, a stranger knocks on her door…

5. On the Road Again

Meg stumbled out of bed.  A million thoughts raced through her mind.  What is going on?  I'm so tired!  Ow, my head!  How am I supposed to become a thief or a spy or whatever when I have to go to school in ten minutes?  And just who is this Nick person?

As she was tying up her long blonde hair into a high ponytail, Mary surged into her room. "Surprise!" she said, "Guess who gets to skip school today?  You do!" she answered herself before Meg even had a chance.  "Katherine called last night after you crashed.  Brit, Nick and Katherine will pick you up in 15 minutes."

"No, I don't wanna wake up," Meg whined.

"Katherine has offered to teach you!  You want to save your dad, don't you?  Come on, it should be fun for you!" Mary said, sounding way to exited for 6:30 in the morning in Meg's opinion.              "Now up!"  She motioned with her hands for Megan to rise out of bed.

15 minutes later, Meg ran though the mansion's Greek style courtyard with a biscuit fresh from the oven in one hand and her bulging suitcase in the other.  She was wearing dark blue skinny jeans and her favorite ruffled pink tank top.  Katherine was at the wheel as Meg jumped in the back of the waiting black SUV.

"You're late," said Brit flatly, while finishing up tying her hair into its usual ponytail.

"Come on, Brittany, you remembered your first day of training, don't you?" asked Katherine.

Brit's proud smile vanished as her face turned a bright shade of red.  Meg tried to disguise a giggle as a terrible coughing fit while Nick chuckled quietly from the passenger seat.  Katherine straight up laughed out loud as she started to drive down the winding driveway.

"Hey there, Meggie!"  Katherine called from the driver's seat, "Can't wait to get started!" She glanced at Meg in the rear view mirror.  "Wait!  What is that?" she asked, motioning to Meg's over-sized cheetah-print suitcase as she slammed on the brakes.

"Uh, my stuff?  Brit told me to pack for the week," Meg shouted over the squeaking of the tires while thinking, Uh, duh!

"Brittany, darling, show Meg your bag," Katherine said exasperated while backing up the tree lined road.  Brit held up a purple Jansport backpack. Meg gaped at it flabbergasted.  Brit smirked.

"You expect me to live off of clothes from a backpack for a week?!" Meg almost shouted.

"Meg, this is something you will need to learn how to do.  You have to now how to pack quickly and efficiently if you want to be any help at all in rescuing your dad," Katherine explained as if to a very young child who needed to be taught a lesson, "Now, Brit, will you be a sweetheart and take Meg up to her room and show her how to pack properly for this kind of an occasion?  Thanks, girls."

Meg and Brit threw open their doors and raced back to the front door of Megan's mansion.  Mary opened the door with a puzzled look on her face, but said nothing as the two girls flew past her, up the stairs, through the hall, and into Meg's room.
