Her Beating Heart

It slowly crawls closer every day, its scales glistening in the sun as it crinkles along, growing with each breath. At least, that is what the emptiness in my head feels like, though I know you cannot understand. Even today, in the nineteenth century, we have little knowledge of why one turns insane, why one scorns reality. And it is thus ignorance that has discarded me here on these grounds, just left waiting for a doctor who will not slaughter my spirit, yet raise me from the ashes of my mind.
Is this him?

9. scene 9

Eric and Georgina walk onto stage at the time and are surprised to meet each other but are happy to see one another.

Eric- Your Mother has just left.

Georgina- I know, I was watching from upstairs.

Eric- Ah. Why did you not come down?

Georgina- I did not feel well. (Brush it off)  I had already said my goodbyes anyway.

Eric- If you are looking for your father-

Georgina- No, no I was not. I was bored and came downstairs.

Eric- Right.

Georgina- I can see it on your face. What is wrong? You look as if you have seen a ghost.

Eric- Nothing. Do you want to go to the grounds?

Georgina- No. Tell me.

Eric- You are very demanding.

Georgina- It gets me what I want.

Eric- (Laugh) Not willingly, though.

Georgina- Eric, please. It helps to share. Where have you been?

Eric- In the library.

Georgina- Did you go to the furthest end?

Eric- Yes.

Georgina- And you read the wrong book.

Eric- You know… What I am talking about?

Georgina- Of course. I had nightmares after I saw it.

Eric- I did not realise they did such things to- to-

Georgina- The insane. None of them really work. They will numb the senses and leave the patient in agony. (Two heart beats)

Eric- That is why you are kept here? To protect you from idiocy? And such revolting and unnecessary acts? Like drilling your head open? Or poking needles through your eyeballs and into your brain?

Georgina- Yes.

Eric- No one knows about you?

Georgina- No one who will put me at risk.

Eric- But you should not have that risk!

Georgina- People are afraid of things they do not understand.

Eric- What is there to understand? You are a person, who thinks, and feels, and dreams. How does that make you differ from us?

Georgina- Do I see you when I am, when I am not here?

Eric- I-

Georgina- Do words form in my mouth? Or thoughts cross my mind? I am the same, but am not. Yet, who is?

Eric- Exactly. You have just as much right as anyone else and should be protected just as anyone else.

Georgina- Forget me for a second, Eric. What about the people who are in poverty? They did not choose that way yet they are subjected to ill respect and the same status for life, because the rich will not give them the chance, but still penalize them for being born and dirty and ill-educated. We should fight their battle first. Then my chance will come. (Two heat beats)

Eric- By the time it changes you will probably be dead.

Georgina- Did you not say there were more like me?

Eric- Yes. But what about you?

Georgina- They are me. They will carry my sufferings and my hope will be that they have more of a chance than I ever did.

Eric- Then what are you going to do?

Georgina- I am not sure. Write, maybe. Let people know I was here, let them understand me.

Eric- Is that all?

Georgina- Yes.

Eric- What about love?

Georgina- It does not belong in my heart. I will leave that for the fairy tales princesses that I read about in my books.

Eric- Why do you say that?

Georgina- Who would love me? And anyway, what would I do with it?

Eric- Your parents love you.

Georgina- They love who I used to be. They do not even know me now.

Eric- They will not do all this for a memory of a girl when she is still living.

Georgina- You would be surprised. In their mind she is dying and they need the doctor to revive her. When he has they can play happy families.

Eric- Do you remember I told you about my sister? Martha?

Georgina- Yes, of course. She turned twelve a couple of days ago.

Eric- No, no she did not.

Georgina- What do you mean?

Eric- She died when I was eight.  (Two heart bears)

Georgina- That is why you wanted to become a doctor.

Eric- Yes. I still miss her Georgina but I know I can never bring her back.

Georgina- She never had the chance.

Eric- No. But you bloody do Georgina. You are still breathing and you can do anything if you really want it. You have already… started changing me.

Georgina- But would I do?

Eric- You have an education many would die for. Decide. What is in your heart?

Georgina- (Shouting) What is in my heart? What is in my heart? I do not know. It is obviously not being sane then. If I wanted to be I would be, right?

Eric- Georgina.

Georgina- (Grabs Eric) Why are you here?

Eric- Your father is paying for my tuition.

Georgina- I know. Find someone else. Take the money and when you are finished, run. Find another job.

Eric- Why?

Georgina- I will not hold you back. You said yourself, that you are the wrong type of doctor.

Eric- (Puts Georgina’s hair behind her ear.) I am not leaving you now.

Georgina- You can be anything.

Eric- And I want to be here, with you.

Georgina- You did not before.

Eric- I did not know you.

Georgina- And so I am stopping you from being what you wanted. Dreamed of.

Eric- Dreams can change.

Georgina- They should not.

Eric- people change.

(Georgina looks down and Eric puts his forehead on hers.)

Georgina- OKay.

(Pause. Then Georgina pushes away from Eric.)

I will see you tomorrow?

Eric- Of course.

Georgina- On Sunday, though, I will be outside. Find me there?

Eric- Where ever you wish.

Georgina- Good day Eric.

Eric- good day.

(They exit.)
