Her Beating Heart

It slowly crawls closer every day, its scales glistening in the sun as it crinkles along, growing with each breath. At least, that is what the emptiness in my head feels like, though I know you cannot understand. Even today, in the nineteenth century, we have little knowledge of why one turns insane, why one scorns reality. And it is thus ignorance that has discarded me here on these grounds, just left waiting for a doctor who will not slaughter my spirit, yet raise me from the ashes of my mind.
Is this him?

11. scene 11

Eric walks on stage as if opening a door. He stops and looks at his watch. Nodding, he runs a hand through his hair and walks diagonally across the stage. He makes it half way and stops. Looking like he is trying to listen he slowly turns his head so he is looking offstage.  He starts walking towards the ‘noise’ and pulls back a curtain to reveal, to the audience, Lord D and Marisa together.

Eric- lord Desseys!

Lord D- Eric. (Lord D pushes Marisa off him and stands up, blocking Eric’s view from her.)

Eric- You have a wife.

Lord D- yes, one as crazy as her daughter.

Eric- (Suddenly really angry) And what is the matter with crazy? How can you do this to them? To Georgina?

Lord D- you know Georgina?

Eric- What does it matter whether I know her or not? You should be able to tell that, if she finds out, she will be even more wrecked.

Lord D- it is not like she can get any worse, Is it?

(Georgina has walked to the top of the isle stairs.)

Eric- That is not the point sir. It is whether you actually have any thought for anyone but yourself.

Lord D- Do remember who you are talking to boy.

Eric- (Laugh) Do remember who found you just now.

Lord D- You do not want to play that game.

Eric- What game? Reality? Facing it? Standing up for what is right?

Lord d- you are young and foolish. Do not get involved in things you do not understand.

Eric- oh, I understand well enough. You are a selfish, fool of a man who has a daughter who deserves the world at her feet. Yet you give her dishonest and betrayal. You are a fool of a person and a disgrace of a father and husband.

Lord D- Do not speak to me like that.

Eric- Always you.

Lord D- You are a no one, boy. And I can keep that way. Georgina is a useless waste of space which I only keep here because of my wife.

(Gets too much for Eric and he punches Lord D who falls to the floor. Marisa screams and runs towards Georgina.)

Eric- Do not ever call her that again. A single hair of hers is worth more than you and your dishonour.

(Eric Pulls the curtain back and exits. Action moves to top of isle stairs.)

Georgina- Are you Penny’s mother?

Marisa- Hu? Who are you?

Georgina- I believe I am her half sister.

Marisa- Georgina. Oh. Please forgive me, you have to understand that I was desperate.

Georgina- I forgive you.

(Marisa Takes Georgina’s hands.)

Marisa- My dear child.

Georgina- Come. Let us talk.

(Georgina leads Marisa to the stage.)

Marisa- How is Penny?

Georgina- She is happy. Missing you I believe.

Marisa- Are you going to tell her? I mean, who you really are to her?

Georgina- I think not. I doubt if she would understand. Are you going to find her?

Marisa- For a visit, yes.

Georgina- She will like that.

Marisa- You must think me terrible.

Georgina- No, actually. It is people like my family that have put you in this position, and yet you carry on trying to give Penny the best. You taught her to read.

Marisa- And what is a poor girl like her going to do with it?

Georgina- She can still get a better job. There must be someone out there that will take her. You just cannot give up. Take her from here, give her the chance and she will shine because she wants to know, to have, to be. She wants it and she should have it if she is willing to sacrifice everything and be accepted. If you do not, you never will be, your whole life would be played out in a cage without ears, in the shadows of the light. Doing nothing, being nothing. Just there.  Let her show the world what she can do. (Two heart beats)

Marisa- What about you? You talk as if you know it.

Georgina- It is too late to start worrying about me, I will be fine. I should go now though.

Marisa- I wish you the best of luck. Do not give up either, brave girl. Goodbye.

(Georgina exits.)

Marisa- I wish as much as you, dear girl. Where I will have the real riches in life, you will just be stuck with the aristocrats. I am sorry for that, for you to be treated so badly. For here loosens the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

(Marisa exits.)
