Confessions of a High School Supermodel

Meet Maddie Fox, a self-proclaimed Lozerilla. She’s 16, loves One Direction, shops at Forever 21, and frequently spends high school lunchtime hiding inside a bathroom stall. Maddie dreams of fitting in with the popular girls, but her shyness (and the fact that she has the most embarrassing family in the world) makes that impossible.

But when a chance encounter with a modeling scout thrusts Maddie into stardom as the next Victoria’s Secret supermodel, the girl that no boy ever looked at twice is suddenly a sex symbol, her picture on every teenage guy’s bedroom wall.

Maddie has to navigate her newfound fame amidst the jealous girls at school who want to see her crash and burn. But is getting everything you ever wanted all it’s cracked up to be?

22. Chapter 22

When Maddie finally got a chance to talk to her best friend about Pool Party Friday, Bree was as reluctant to accept the invitation as Sundance had been to offer it.  However, after the huge fight that had ensued last time, Bree was a little more sensitive with Maddie’s feelings this time around.

“Well, if you really want to go…” Bree agreed reluctantly.  “I still don’t like Sundance.  But after what happened last time you went to a party with her, it’s not like I’m gonna let you go alone.”

“Come on!” Maddie wheedled.  “Aren’t you at least a little bit curious to finally get to go to PPF?  I bet it’ll be like a college party!”

Bree wrinkled her nose.  “A college party.  Red plastic cups filled with gross beer and skanky girls in bikinis trying to impress ugly guys.”

She caught the look on Maddie’s face and quickly added.  “But yeah, maybe it’ll be fun!”

Over the next few days, Maddie was swamped with the usual reading, tests, homework, and college apps, so she looked forward to the excitement happening at the end of the week.  So it was a surprise when her chance to escape the onslaught of schoolwork came a day early.  That Thursday, she got a call from Ms. Blake asking her if she could come babysit Justin that night for the first time in ages.   Maddie had work to do, but she was dying to get out of the house, and Ms. Blake promised she wouldn’t be out too late.

“I know you probably don’t need the money anymore with your new job--- Congratulations on that by the way, the pictures looked beautiful!” Ms. Blake babbled to her over the phone.   “It’s just that I tried introducing Justin to a new babysitter last week and he bit the poor girl!  Can you believe that?  Anyway, you two always get along so well; you’re his favorite sitter!”

“No problem, Ms. Blake, I can come over,” she promised.  It’ll be nice to finally take a break from studying, she thought.  Besides, I haven’t seen little Justin in forever!

When Maddie’s mom dropped her off in front of the Blake residence early that evening, Ms. Blake greeted her with a big hug.  “I’m SO glad you’re here!  Seriously, you have no idea how much Justin has been missing you!”

Maddie glanced over at the four-year-old.  Justin was playing with some dinosaur toys on the floor and paying no attention to her whatsoever.

“Well, how much I’ve been missing you,” Ms. Blake clarified.  “How much I missed having a babysitter that he doesn’t bite!”

“Don’t worry about it, it’s fine!” Maddie assured her.  “He and I will have a great time together.”

“So I’ve left some food for you guys in the fridge.  Also,” she continued, “Sawyer is home right now but he’s going out later tonight.  He’s probably in his room right now.”

Sawyer’s home? Maddie thought to herself in surprise. I wonder if he still thinks my name is Mandy?  she wondered idly.

“See you in a couple hours,” Ms. Blake called breathlessly as she dashed out the door and shut it behind her.

Maddie shifted her attention to the little boy on the carpet.  “Come on, Justin!  Let’s play some video games!”

Maddie saw no sign of Sawyer throughout the evening.  Not while she and Justin played video games, not while she was pulling dinner out of the fridge, not while she was helping Justin brush his teeth, and not while she was finally putting the sleepy little boy to bed.  Didn’t Ms. Blake say he was going out tonight? she kept wondering as she glanced at his closed bedroom door.

Just as Maddie had finished putting Justin to bed, Sawyer finally chose to make an appearance.  He poked his head out of his bedroom door and shook his shaggy hair out of his eyes.

“Hey Maddie!” he called to her with a nod.

Maddie looked over in surprise. There he was, as cute and disheveled as always.  “Don’t you mean Mandy?” she blurted out before she could help herself.

Sawyer frowned in confusion.

“Um, the last time I was here, you kept calling me Mandy,” she tried to explain.

He smiled warmly at her like they had just shared a private joke.  “Oh, right!  That was last time we hung out!  I was so wasted that night.”

Maddie curiously eyed Sawyer, who was smiling at her in an open, friendly way.  “You’re not, you know, drunk now are you?” she asked tentatively.

“Who, me? Nah!” He laughed and shook his head.  “What are you doing right now?”

Maddie shrugged.  “I was just gonna watch some TV,” she said, her words coming out more like a question than a statement. “Hey, didn’t your mom say you were going out tonight?”

“Yeah, change of plans,” Sawyer said casually.

Maddie nodded.  “Oh, well, ok...  I’ll let you get back to what you were doing.”

Sawyer glanced inside his room.  “You know, Maddie, I have a TV in my room.”

“We can watch TV in here,” Sawyer suggested with a lazy smile.  “My bed is way more comfortable than the couch,” he coaxed.

“Uhhh…” Maddie drawled.  She wasn’t really sure how to respond. “Okayyy,” she finally agreed tentatively.  Is this the same Sawyer Blake from last time? she asked herself in surprise.  He wouldn’t even look me in the eyes at school a few weeks ago!

Sawyer held the door open for her and Maddie cautiously stepped into his room.  I’m finally getting to see inside the secret abode of Sawyer Blake!  Maddie was a little disappointed to see it was just a regular teenage guy’s room, nothing special.  And I thought my room was messy!  This is even worse!  There were piles of dirty clothes thrown in every corner of the room, and it smelled kind of bad in there.  She tried not to let him see her wrinkling her nose in disgust.

Sawyer patted a seat next to him on his rumpled blue plaid bedsheet.  Maddie gingerly took a seat as Sawyer wriggled close to her on the bed.

“Uh, aren’t we gonna watch TV?” Maddie asked, glancing at the big black screen mounted on the wall in front of them.

“Right.”  Sawyer snapped on the TV and started flipping through the channels for a few minutes, the sound on low.

He looked over at her.  “Nothing good on TV,” he said simply.

“Wanna watch a movie?” Maddie asked.  She felt nervous and on high alert but she wasn’t sure why.

“Let’s play a game,” he suggested.

Maddie breathed a small sign of relief.  “Well your brother and I love Pacman!” she suggested brightly.

Sawyer paused.  “How about…. We answer anything the other person wants for half an hour,” he replied silkily.

Maddie’s heart started beating a bit faster.  This was one of those games that the popular group of kids played at their parties.  Maddie had never been to a party where anyone played Spin the Bottle or 7 Minutes in Heaven.  And she had certainly never played Ask Me Anything before.

“Don’t look so nervous!” Sawyer chuckled.  “It’s not like I’m gonna ask you what your bra size is or anything,” he smirked.  He smiled devilishly at her and rubbed his hands together.  “All right, let’s start with an easy one!”

Maddie paused, trying to think of the most innocuous question possible.  “What’s your favorite color?”

“Blue,” Sawyer answered easily.  “Because of the Yankees.”  He turned to her.  “Who’s your favorite band?”

“One Direction,” Maddie replied automatically, without any hesitation at all.

Sawyer made a sour face.  “One Direction?  They’re so lame!” he groaned.

Maddie bristled.  She knew most guys her own age didn’t like One Direction (with the exception of Evan of course!) but she hated it when people acted snobby about music!  So many people acted like anything that was popular automatically had to be rubbish.

“Well, I think they’re amazing!” she replied hotly.

“Yeah, yeah, you’re right,” Sawyer quickly agreed. “Next question!”

Maddie’s breath caught in her throat.  There was a question she really, really wanted to ask him, but she wasn’t sure if she dared.  It’s not like he likes me anyway.  I have nothing to lose!  She decided to just go for it.  “Do you think I’m pretty?”

Sawyer smiled his charmingly cocky smile.  “You’re an eight out of ten.”

Maddie stiffened.  She didn’t like the thought of being rated on a scale of one to ten.  Is that a good thing or a bad thing? she wondered.

Sawyer noticed her discomfort and hastened to explain.  “It’s a great score!  You weren’t even on our list before we all saw those Victoria’s Secret pictures!”

“Uh… okay.”  Maddie didn’t know whether to be flattered or insulted.  She felt a little of both.

She looked around his bedroom.  The smell was starting to get to her.

Jeez, do you EVER clean your room? she thought to herself.

Except she hadn’t just thought it to herself.  Maddie hadn’t even realized that the words had slipped out of her mouth until it was too late.

Sawyer looked amused and a little taken aback.  “I thought it was clean!  Was that really what you wanted to ask me? “

“No, no, sorry.” Maddie quickly shook her head, her cheeks burning.

Sawyer smiled.  “It’s okay, you can ask me two in a row if you want!”

Maddie paused.  Another question suddenly popped into her head.  I can’t believe I’m about to ask him this!  This is so embarrassing!   “Who do you think is prettier, me or Bree?”

“Hmmm…”  He scratched his chin, looking deep in thought.  “I’m not gonna lie- Bree is pretty hot.  I’ve seen her around the pool in gym class, doing laps and stuff.”

Maddie visibly stiffened.

“But I would have to say you’re definitely hotter,” Sawyer grinned.  “Your Victoria’s Secret pictures are so sexy.  All the guys think so.”

Maddie blushed a little.  “Thanks.”  His compliments made her a little uneasy.

“Ok, my turn,” Sawyer turned to look at her.  “Have you and Bree ever made out with each other before?” he asked, straight-faced and unsmiling.

WHATTT??  Maddie’s eyes searched his face for signs of a joke but he seemed to be completely serious.

Maddie let out a nervous giggle.  “Ew, NO!  She’s like, my friend.  Why would you ask that?”

Sawyer shrugged, his face as disappointed as a little boy who had just been told there was no Santa Claus.

“I dunno, I just saw the pictures of you and Sundance from that party and I figured…”

Maddie shook her head fiercely and scowled.  “No!  That wasn’t what it looked like.”

Sawyer sighed unhappily.  “Okay, now you ask me one.”

“Who do you think is prettier, me or Sundance?” Maddie asked.  I might as well just ask him anything!

You.  I prefer brunettes,” he answered slyly.  “Cmon, gimme a hard one!” he exclaimed.  “Ha, that’s what she said!” He laughed at his own joke.

Maddie smiled along with him, though she didn’t really think he was funny.  She wanted more info on Sundance.  “So you and Sundance, didn’t you guys just break up?” she asked innocently.

Hey!” Sawyer protested playfully.  “You can’t ask two questions in a row!  It’s my turn now!”

Oh come on, you can tell me!” Maddie said quickly.  “So, is it official, you guys are broken up?”

Sawyer frowned, not wanting to talk about his ex.  “Yeah, of course it’s official.  It’s on facebook and everything.”

Oh ok.”

Ok, my question,” Sawyer rubbed his hands together.  “Do you like guys with muscles?” he asked her, a twinkle in his eye.

Maddie’s heart immediately began to race faster.  If she hadn’t been completely certain that he was hitting on her before, she was sure now!

“Sure, I guess,” she answered awkwardly, as Sawyer placed his hand on her thigh and began rubbing it up and down.  What do I do?

“You’re so hot Maddie,” he whispered, leaning in closer to her.

“Thanks,” Maddie mumbled, inching away from him.  He was freaking her out.  Where had this suddenly come from?

“When I saw those pictures of you, I was so turned on… I never know you were hiding that great body under there,” he murmured.

“Uh, thanks?”  Maddie sat frozen and looked ahead.  This is so weird!  She felt extremely uncomfortable.  How do I get out of this?!

Sawyer reached out and stroked her hair.  Relax,” he soothed.  “You’re too tense.  Want me to give you a massage?”

I’m sure he’d love that.  “Uh, no, that’s alright,” Maddie said.

Maddie suddenly spotted something strange-looking on the floor of his bedroom.  The scrap of lilac fabric stood out amongst a sea of dark boys clothes.  She squinted her eyes and peered a little closer.  Is that…. a thong?

Um, whose thong is that?” she asked tentatively, gesturing her head toward the corner of the room.

Huh?  What?  I don’t have a thong in my room!” Sawyer protested nervously.

The one over there,” she pointed.

Oh!  That must be… my mom’s,” he assured her awkwardly, running his hand through his hair.  “Now where were we?”

Sawyer’s hand found its way to the small of her back, pulling her in closer to him.  “C’mon,” he urged.  “I’ve seen the way you look at me.”  He leaned in close.  “I know all the girls want me,” he murmured.  “I’ve decided it’s your turn.”

He leaned his face toward hers and closed his eyes. She could see his lips moving closer and closer, as if in slow motion.  During those few seconds before Sawyer was about to kiss her, Maddie experienced a moment of clarity.

This was NOT the way she wanted her first kiss to go.  Here she was in a dirty bedroom that smelled like stinky socks, some other girl’s thong in the corner of the room.  She was with a boy who was cute, yes, but who had also just broken up with his girlfriend.  He had barely ever spoken to her before and a few weeks ago he couldn’t even remember her name.  He doesn’t even really like me!  He just wants to brag to his friends that he got to make out with a Victoria’s Secret model!  She was worth better than this.

With a jerk, Maddie tried to pull back out of Sawyer’s eager grasp, but he held on tight.

“Don’t worry, its fine,” Sawyer mumbled, his lips literally millimeters away from her own.

“Get off me!” Maddie shrieked.

Sawyer finally let go, shocked.  This was probably the first time he had ever been rejected by a girl before.  I’m not as easy as the girls you’re probably used to! Maddie thought angrily.

“You’re an asshole!” she shot at him.  It was scary to actually say those words that to someone and Maddie felt a surge of adrenaline shoot through her veins.

Maddie got up off the bed, feeling flushed and flustered, and extremely upset.  I have to get out of here, she thought claustrophobically.

“Stay here until your mom comes home!” she snapped.  The sharpness in her voice surprised even her.  “Your brother’s still sleeping, remember?”

With that, Maddie stormed out of his bedroom, slamming his door shut behind her.  She burst through the front door of the house and sucked some cool night air into her lungs.   Taking some deep breaths made her feel better, but she was still seething.

I have to get out of here, she thought desperately.

Maddie glanced down at her cell phone and hesitated.  It made the most sense to call her mom, but she did not want to have to explain what just happened.  She’d probably end up having to endure a lecture on “no sex before marriage” and how boys only wanted "one thing."  Who can come pick me up?

There was only one other person in her phone contacts who she knew had a car.  Maddie pressed a couple buttons on her phone until she found the number.  Here goes…
