19. Chapter 19

19

The next morning, Maddie was gradually awoken by rays of sunshine flashing through the slits of her window blinds.  The alternating ribbons of light and shadow on her walls vaguely reminded her of bars in a jail cell.  She didn’t have to get up early today- it was the weekend.  Maddie snuggled deeper into the warm cocoon of her cozy blanket.  She could hear Honeydew purring in a little ball at her feet.  She did not want to get up and face what she already knew was going to be a horrible day.

After she’d gotten home from the party last night, she’d stayed up late to go online and google herself.  Ann had predicted that Maddie’s pictures would already be up on the blogs, and unfortunately, she had been dead right.

Maddie had been stunned and dismayed to see that the photos of her and Sundance locking lips had already made their way round the internet.  The worst part was probably not the pictures themselves but the comments people wrote below them.  She scanned through hundreds of anonymous comments labeling the sixteen-year-old model trashy, slutty, and every bad thing in between. One person had even used the phrase “every parent’s worst nightmare.”  The comments stung, but oddly, Maddie felt quite detached as she was reading them.  She felt like they were written about a completely different person and therefore wasn’t especially bothered by them.  I mean, how can a girl be a slut if she’s never even kissed a guy before?

There seemed to be a lot of interest in “Maddie’s best friend Sundance” as well.  Sundance’s number of twitter followers had multiplied exponentially within hours.  It also seemed as though someone (as if we all couldn’t guess who) had started a facebook fanpage dedicated to Sundance, “the multi-talented performer/entertainer.”

Maddie snuggled deeper into bed and tried to drift back off to sleep.  I’m so tired.

Maddie’s mom pounded on her door.  “Mad, get out here!”

What is she bothering me for?  I don’t have to get up for school! she thought, irritated.  “Whyyyyy?” she called in the grumpiest vice she could muster.

“Maddie, get out here now!” her mom demanded.

Maddie scowled.  What does she want?  For goodness sake, can’t everyone just leave me alone and let me sleep?

Maddie’s mom knocked on her door again.  “Maddie!  Get up!  Come to the kitchen!”

With a yawn and a stretch, Maddie wriggled out of the covers.  If I don’t get up, she’ll just keep bothering me!  she thought bitterly.  I can’t wait ‘til I’m in college!

Maddie plodded down the hall, not bothering to put slippers on.  You know how sometimes you just wake up and you can instantly feel in your bones that the day is gonna suck?  This was one of those days.

Ann is mad at me- again.  I messed up at the launch party.  The internet thinks I’m a skank.  And Bree and I still aren’t friends.

When Maddie got to the kitchen, all the negative thoughts cluttering her brain flew away as her eyes focused on a very large flat rectangular box taking up most of the kitchen table.  There was a big red bow tied around it.

She stared at the package in surprise.  “Hey, what’s that?”

Her mom shrugged and took a sip from her mug of coffee.  “I have no idea.  I saw it on the doorstep when I got up this morning.  There’s a tag on it that says it’s for you.”

Huh?  Maddie eyed the package in confusion. It’s too early in the morning for this.

“Who’s it from?” she asked her mom.

“I don’t know,” her mom said as she shook her head.  “I woke you up so you could open it!”

Maddie tentatively stepped closer to the package, suddenly feeling a whole lot more awake.  Who could this be from?  Ann?  Maybe it’s something from Victoria’s Secret?  Not Bree, right?  Wait, it couldn’t be Sundance, could it?

Without further ado, Maddie untied the red ribbon and lifted the lid of the box.  She gasped in surprise.  There, sitting inside the box, was a poster of One Direction.  What the…?

As her eyes scanned the poster, she was even more shocked to see five messy black signatures scrawled next to the five smiling faces of the band members.  Are those autographs real or were they printed onto the poster? she briefly wondered, leaning her face in close to inspect them.  They look real!

Her mom leaned over behind her to get a look.  “Oh, it’s just that boy band you’re so crazy about,” she sniffed, apparently unimpressed.  She turned back to her coffee.  “So who was it from?” she asked.

“I have no idea,” Maddie answered, bewildered.  A signed poster of One Direction shows up on my doorstep with no explanation.  That might just be the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me.

Maddie inspected the poster again.  It was much bigger than the ones they had been handing out at the concert.  It was a better photo of the boys too.  Maddie felt more puzzled than happy at this point as she racked her brain to come up with an explanation.

It couldn’t be Sundance, could it? she asked herself skeptically. I mean, she probably did ruin my old poster.

Let me check my phone, she thought to herself, looking around to see where she left her little clutch purse from last night.  Maybe she texted me.

Maddie pulled out her cell phone and pressed the button to turn it on.  She didn’t have any new texts but she did have an email.  Frowning, she clicked on her inbox to read the message.

The email sender was listed as EvanReed17.  Evan?  How did he get my email address? she wondered in surprise.  Mystified, she began to read.

“Hey Maddie-

I saw how upset you were at the party last night.  I was kind of worried about you when you ran out so suddenly.  Anyway, I remembered you said that your friend’s poster got ruined.  The guys in 1D are buddies of mine; I’ve met them a bunch of times at different awards shows and events.  They’re really cool and I knew they wouldn’t mind hooking me up with a favor.  (Harry actually owes me one anyway!)  I tried to explain at the party, but you left so quickly!

By the way, I got one of their representatives to send me a replacement poster.  I had it messengered over to your house as soon as I could.  I hope you don’t mind that I had my manager track down your address and email from the Victoria’s Secret people. Anyway, I hope this helps things between you and your friend!  Let me know if you’re feeling better.

-Evan”

Maddie didn’t know what to say.  She felt a giant smile spreading across her face.  That was probably the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me, she decided!  Of course it wasn’t from Sundance, she scolded herself.  She examined the poster with renewed excitement.  This one was signed by not only Niall, but the rest of the band as well; Harry, Louis, Zayn, and Liam.

Maddie looked back at her email.  There was an attachment from Evan labeled “Message to Bree.”  Maddie clicked the download button and a few seconds later, a video popped up on her tiny phone screen.

Maddie screamed.

The five members of One Direction were all sitting together on white leather seats.  From the background, it looked to be a small plane.  Maybe that’s them on their flight to Japan! Maddie thought.

“Is it on?” Liam mumbled.

“Shut up, it’s recording!” Zayn scolded him.

Niall spoke up.  “Hey Bree!  We’re sorry you couldn’t make it to our concert but we’d love it if you came to our next one!”

“Thanks for being our biggest fan!” Harry added.  Maddie giggled when she saw that he was wearing a silly fuzzy animal hat over his brown curls.

Louis looked at the group.  “One, two, three…” he counted under his breath.

“We love you, Bree!” the five members of the band chorused in unison.

And just like that, the video stopped.  Maddie eagerly pressed “replay.” She probably watched the video four or five times before the realization finally sunk in.

I have a personalized video from One Direction!!! her mind screamed.  Maddie couldn’t contain her excitement.  She started jumping up and down all over the kitchen, waving her cell phone around in the air like a trophy.

Maddie laughed delightedly.  She had no idea thirty seconds could make such a big difference in a person’s life!  It was as if yesterday had never happened!  Who cared if her old poster had gotten destroyed?  What she had now was So. Much. Better!  A poster signed by every member of One Direction?  And a personal video message from the boys? Bree was going to be thrilled!

She suddenly remembered who had made all of this possible.  Evan!  I can’t believe he did this for me, she thought, truly warmed by the gesture.  I was sure he just thought I was crazy after I went off like that at the party!  I have to thank him!  She grabbed her phone and stared at it for a second.  Right after I talk to Bree!  I’m going to call her right now!

Top 10 Things That Annoy Me

 1.  Girls who wear high heels to the grocery store, the dentist, or any other really inappropriate place- they just look ridiculous and like they’re trying way too hard!

2.  When you open a DVD case and it’s either empty or the wrong movie movie is in it.

3.  People who say they hate cats and that all cats are mean.  Most of those people have probably never even owned a cat, or maybe only met one or two before in their lives!  Cats all have different personalities and many can be really sweet.

4.  People in public restrooms who don’t wash their hands after using the toilet!  Gross!

5.  People who write "Keep in touch!" in your yearbook but never talk to you again.

6.  When you’re telling a story and you can tell someone isn’t even listening. They’re just waiting for you to stop talking so that they can tell their story!

7.  Justin Bieber.  Peeing in a mop bucket while yelling “Fuck Bill Clinton?” Not to mention, he’s a terrible monkey owner!  I am officially crossing him off my “Fantasy Boyfriend” list!

8.  When you bite into a jelly bean and it's a different flavor than what you thought it was.

9.  When something I've been into for a long time suddenly becomes popular.

10.  When the teacher is about to end class and someone asks a really dumb question that gets the teacher talking for the next ten minutes!
