Confessions of a High School Supermodel

Meet Maddie Fox, a self-proclaimed Lozerilla. She’s 16, loves One Direction, shops at Forever 21, and frequently spends high school lunchtime hiding inside a bathroom stall. Maddie dreams of fitting in with the popular girls, but her shyness (and the fact that she has the most embarrassing family in the world) makes that impossible.

But when a chance encounter with a modeling scout thrusts Maddie into stardom as the next Victoria’s Secret supermodel, the girl that no boy ever looked at twice is suddenly a sex symbol, her picture on every teenage guy’s bedroom wall.

Maddie has to navigate her newfound fame amidst the jealous girls at school who want to see her crash and burn. But is getting everything you ever wanted all it’s cracked up to be?

14. Chapter 14

The rest of the day flew by in a blur, and it was after midnight before an exhausted Maddie finally crawled into bed that night.

Maddie felt lucky that Ann had forgiven her for her deception, but she still had to endure a long lecture about how she was a role model now that she was in the public eye.  That meant Maddie had to represent both herself and the company in a positive way.  Ann explained that since there was already controversy surrounding Maddie’s young age, she had to work extra hard and be on her best behavior to prove the doubters wrong.   It was all a little overwhelming.

The most immediate concern was the Pinkette launch party coming up this weekend.  This would be Maddie’s formal debut to the press, and Ann promised it would be a lot more organized than her paparazzi experience after school.  “It’s going to be as much about you as it is about the clothes,” Ann warned her.  “We expect you to be poised in your interviews, and professional when you conduct yourself on the red carpet.”

Maddie’s mom had even gotten over her initial hesitations and was starting to warm up to the idea, especially now that it meant college would be paid for.  Mrs. Fox had printed out about ten different college brochures and arranged them in a neat little semicircle on Maddie’s bed.  Little Cassidy was now trying to steal Maddie’s bras to sell on eBay.  To Maddie’s surprise, her dad seemed unexpectedly okay with it too.  He spent the afternoon emailing friends and family and tracking all the news sites Maddie’s story had been on.

It was everywhere.  All over twitter.  All over facebook.  All over the blogs.  Perez Hilton had already drawn rude things on one of her pictures.  Even CNN was covering the story! The whole thing was very exciting and surreal.

The only thing that had put a damper on the good news was that the video interview Maddie had done at the photoshoot was now being broadcast on every entertainment news channel.  Maddie cringed inside as she watched Access Hollywood, waiting for THE PART to air.  She knew it was coming!

“Who is your best friend at school?”

“Well, her name is Sundance.  We’re really good friends.  Every Friday we have a pool party at her house after school.”

Maddie groaned and covered her face with both of her hands.  Why did I have to say that? she thought.  Now everyone at school is going to see it and think I’m pathetic!

 “That sounds like fun!”

“Yeah, we have loads of fun together.”

“And do you have a boyfriend?”

“Um yes, yes I do!  There’s this guy at school I’m dating.”

“Well he’s a lucky guy!  You probably have half the guys at school chasing after you!

 “Yeah, something like that.”

Maddie winced.  Anyone who has ever met me knows that I don’t have a boyfriend!  And Sundance is the last person in the world who would ever call me her best friend!  Maybe no one will see it? she thought hopefully.

Um, yeah right.

She knew there was little chance of that happening.  I mean, if someone in your class became a celebrity overnight, wouldn’t you be curious?

That little clip of Maddie’s interview at the photoshoot became one of the story’s most replayed videos.  The youtube video had only gone up a few hours ago and had already been viewed over a hundred thousand times!  Now all the comments online were speculating who her “mystery boyfriend” was.  Little did they know, he didn’t exist.

She cringed.  What will everyone at school think?  That I’m crazy?  That I’m a compulsive liar?  That I’m a loser who’s desperate to be Sundance’s friend?  Maddie nibbled her fingernail and tried to push the silly interview out of her mind.

Despite all the excitement going on with Victoria’s Secret, Maddie still had to go to school the next day.  The world could be going up in flames and mom would still make me go to school.

There were a few photographers hanging around the main entrance, hoping to snap a picture of her, but Maddie’s mom dropped her off at the gym entrance around the corner so she could avoid them.

Maddie hastily walked through the halls with her head tucked down.  She felt like everyone was staring at her, and she was right.  As she hurried along, she could see other students glance at her, then quickly turn to whisper to their friends.  When Maddie had almost reached her locker, she was startled to see Livia sneer in her face, “Where’s your best friend?” before flouncing down the hall.

Maddie cringed, feeling the tips of her ears burning.  Livia was Sundance’s real best friend, and she probably had a right to be upset.

Maddie lingered by her locker, not wanting to turn around and feel everyone’s eyes on her.  Suddenly, she jumped high as she felt someone put their hand on her shoulder.  “Hey Maddie!” Sundance sang out.

Maddie spun around and saw Sundance standing in front of her, all perky and radiant.  Maddie searched for some hint of anger or malice on her face, but she didn’t see any.  All she saw was Sundance’s friendly, glowing smile.

“Maddie, I saw your pictures online.  They look absolutely amazing!” Sundance gushed.  “I had no idea you were going to be a Victoria’s Secret model!  Why didn’t you tell anyone?”

Maddie shifted uncomfortably.  She’s going to mention the interview any second now, I just know it, she thought to herself.  “Oh, it wasn’t a sure thing and I kinda had to keep it confidential—“

“And you can call me Sunny!” Sundance chirped as she patted Maddie’s arm in a friendly gesture.  “Or Sundae!  Whatever you want,” she giggled.

“Look, about what I said on TV about us being best friends…” Maddie began nervously.  This is so awkward.

Sundance shook her head so hard her curls bounced.  “Don’t even worry about that!” she protested.  “Seriously, like, don’t.  Besides, I always considered you one of my friends anyway!  All the girls in the class are my friends.  I mean, you’ve been to my birthday parties right?

Huh?  Maddie felt completely caught off guard.  “Not since the third grade I think.”

Sundance beamed.  “Seeee?  I knew you’d been to one of my parties!”  She tossed her hair over her shoulder.  “Anyway, I want to hear all about your new life as a Victoria’s Secret model!  Like, how did you get chosen?”

“Well, I got scouted.  I was at the mall one day and---“

“There must be some cool parties coming up, right?” Sundance interrupted, tucking her arm inside Maddie’s the same way she had done with Livia lots of times.

Maddie hesitated a beat.  “Well… um, there actually is this launch party thing coming up.  It’s mostly a party for the press to introduce the line to the public, but they said I could---“

“Oh my god!” Sundance suddenly froze in the hallway and placed her hand over her chest.  “That is so sweet of you!”

Maddie’s mind went blank for a second as she stood there in confusion.

“I would love to go!  Thank you so much for inviting me!” Sundance immediately enveloped Maddie in a tight hug.  She squeezed a stunned Maddie and swung her back and forth.  She even began bouncing up and down in the hug, which sort of made Maddie’s boobs hurt.

Sundance finally released her chokehold grip, giving Maddie a good look at her bright, shining face and clear blue eyes.

“Oh, look, there’s Sawyer!  I gotta go!  Facebook me the details about the party!”  Sundance skipped away from Maddie and into Sawyers arms.

“Um, bye!” she tried to call as Sundance pranced away.

Maddie wasn’t an idiot or anything.  She knew Sundance was probably being extra nice to her now that she was a model.  But she felt like she sort of owed Sundance after that embarrassing interview she had given.  She had told the world she and Sundance were best friends, so could she really blame Sundance for wanting her to live up to that?

Besides, it was true that Maddie had gone to Sundance’s birthday party in the third grade.  Of course, that was the infamous birthday party where Sundance had cut off all of Tammy Burroughs’ hair.  Eight-year-old Tammy had silky, white-blonde hair that had never been cut before in her entire life.  Tammy’s mother took enormous pride in her daughter’s waist-length locks, spending hours washing and brushing it to perfection each day.  Tammy’s nickname was Rapunzel; she was the only girl in their class whose hair was longer and blonder than Sundance’s.

At the birthday party, Sundance had told Tammy about a magical pair of scissors she owned where you could cut a person’s hair and it would instantly grow back.  Maddie remembered quite vividly how about five seconds after the cut had been made and the hair failed to grow right back, Tammy had begun shrieking at the top of her lungs.

The party had ended immediately afterward; everyone’s parents were called to pick them up. Tammy sobbed as her mother screamed at Sundance’s mom and threatened to sue her.

The next day, Tammy had come to school with her hair chopped short, literally as short as a boy’s.  And from then on, Sundance stopped inviting the entire class to her birthday parties.  She would only invite girls like Livia and Amberly who were her actual friends.

Now after all this time, Maddie was the one inviting Sundance to a party!  This would be a first.

Maddie turned back to her locker, feeling confused.  She had a funny feeling in her stomach but she wasn’t completely sure why.

A second later, Bree walked over to her and looked at her with a bizarre expression.  “Whoa, what was Sundance doing talking to you?” she asked in a surprised voice.

Maddie shrugged uncomfortably.  “Well, I felt kind of bad about that interview of me saying I was best friends with her.”

Bree frowned, scrunching her pretty face up.  “Yeah, I saw that on TV.  What was up with that?”

Maddie sighed and shook her head.  She didn’t feel like talking about it and reliving the embarrassment.  She just wanted to put it behind her.  “I don’t know, Bree.  I don’t know what I was thinking.”

Bree instinctively sensed Maddie’s discomfort and changed the subject.  “So I’m glad Ann wasn’t too mad about what happened!  And that’s cool that your mom finally changed her mind- she’s not as bad as you thought!”

Maddie nodded.  “I know!  I really lucked out!  There’s all this fun stuff I get to do!”

“So what happens now?” Bree asked.  “What are your official duties now that you are Mademoiselle Supermodel?  Anything cool?” she asked enthusiastically.

“Oh my god, yes!”  Maddie started talking eagerly.  “There’s a launch party for Pinkette coming up this weekend!  Ann said there’s going to be a really cool band performing there, but she won’t tell me who it is!  You’ll come with me, right?”

“Of course!  We’re going to have so much fun!” Bree exclaimed.  “We have to plan our outfits!”

Maddie hesitated for a split second.  “Well, I knew I was going to invite you, obviously!  But, um, I should probably let you know, I also just invited Sundance.”

Bree laughed lightly.  “Yeah, right!  So what are you going to wear?  Are they getting you a stylist?” she babbled excitedly.

Maddie laughed nervously.  “No, she’s really coming,” she mumbled quickly.  “Yeah,” she continued, “Ann’s getting me a stylist.  And she wants me to start working out with a personal trainer.”

Bree’s smile vanished.  “Wait a second- what?

“I know, it’s so annoying!  I hate exercising!  I’m trying to come up with a workout playlist.”

Bree scowled.  “What do you mean ‘she’s really coming?’”

Maddie twisted her hands together nervously.  “Well, she really sort of just…you know….um…. invited herself,” she stammered.

Bree’s face looked furious.  “So go and uninvite her!  Why should she get to come?”

Maddie bit her lip.  “You want me to go and uninvite her?” she asked uncertainly.”  You act like it’s so impossible that someone like Sundance could ever want to be friends with someone like me! she thought to herself.  “I don’t want to be rude.”

“Oh, like she’s not constantly rude to you?” Bree asked sarcastically.  She was starting to look truly angry.  “You invited someone who doesn’t even like you before your actual friend?”

“No, Bree, it’s not like that---“

“Who was the one who helped you get the job in the first place?” Bree challenged, scowling at her in frustration.  “Wasn’t it my idea to write that email to Ann?”

“Yes, but—"

“If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t even be a model in the first place!  And you know Sundance is just using you!”

Maddie shook her head.  “Bree, you’re overreacting!  Of course I appreciate what you did for me—“

“Then why are you trying to be all friendly with Sundance all of a sudden?  Sundance is a total bitch!” Bree snorted and crossed her arms.  “She makes Regina George look like Mother Teresa!

“I just feel bad because of that stupid interview I gave!” Maddie protested.  “I wish I never said it, but I did!  I kind of owe her one!”

Bree looked mad.  “You don’t owe her anything, Maddie.  Can’t you see she wouldn’t be giving you the time of day if you weren’t a Victoria’s Secret model now?  She’s trying to use you!  And you’re too dumb to see it!”

This seriously annoyed Maddie.  “Don’t call me dumb!” she shot back.

“Do you even want me to come at all?  Or were you just planning on having fun with your new best friend, Sundance?” she said that last bit in a mocking voice.  “Why don’t you go suck up to Livia too while you’re at it?” she snapped.

Maddie rolled her eyes in exasperation.  “Just shut up for a second and let me explain!” she complained.

“Whatever, Maddie!  Whatever!”  Bree angrily tossed her hair and stalked away.  “Go have fun with Sundance!” she snapped.

Maddie stood helplessly in the hallway watching her only friend walk away from her.  The last thing she had ever intended to do was to mess things up with Bree!

Uh oh.  What have I just done?
