Martyr

Jade Kapan just might be the most normal person you could meet. But don't jump to conclusions, because you couldn't be more wrong. And she has no idea. No idea that the angels fight demons constantly just to keep the humans safe. No idea that she can change the whole course of the war. The only thing is, will she have the strength to make a vital decision?

12. Raid

Still breathing heavily, Ash pulled his blade out of the large demon's chest. The pile of rubble that had collapsed on top of Mark stirred, then out emerged a very angry and very much alive angel. Immediately, Ash turned on him, eyes glinting in anger, getting up in his face. I stood up, ignoring the pain in my leg for now.

"What the hell is wrong with you!?" Ash shouted.

"What?!" Mark replied angrily, pushing Ash in the chest to get him out of his face.

"You know how important she is, and every time she goes with you she gets hurt!" He fumed, gesturing angrily at my leg.

"What are you saying!?" Mark replied, the muscles in his biceps flexing involuntarily. "You didn't even know her two hours ago!" I just stood there, staring uncomprehendingly at the two fighting boys.

"Yes, I did! I was her tormentor for years! I just didn't do anything because... because I loved her!"

Before Mark could reply, I collapsed, and everything went black. When I woke up, I was still in the alley, but my leg was wrapped, and feeling a lot better. I could still hear Mark and Ash fighting off in the distance. They were probably just trying not to wake me up. Where did Cassie and Nathan go? I face paled, and guilt got the better of me. I rose to go ask the boys.

Before approaching them, I listened in on what they were saying.

"–possibly think I'm going to let her be with you, a demon?!" Mark was hissing at Ash.

"Well, she'd be a heck of a lot safer with me then you!" Came the reply. "Look, we both obviously want her to be safe. And we both obviously have some serious feelings for her. So may the best man win." Ash continued, furious light glinting in his dark eyes.

"I knew we shouldn't have trusted you! She's not an item, or a trophy. She'll be with who she wants." Mark's reply, no matter how angry he sounded, made my heart soar. They both loved me. And they were  fighting over me. That made me both furious and giddy at the same time.

This pushed Ash over the edge, and he pulled his arm back, then punched Mark across the cheek. Mark's head snapped back, and he pivoted on his heal, delivering a kick to Ash's stomach. I couldn't let this happen. They would destroy one another before admitting defeat. I stepped forward and grabbed Mark's wrist before he could give another punch. His years of training in combat took over, and he wrenched his arm free, and elbowed me right in the nose. I collapsed to the ground, silent tears streaking down my face. Just what I needed. Realization dawned on his face at what he had just done and as he went to apologize, Ash stepped in front of him.

"You've done enough, Mark." He practically spat. Mark glared back at Ash, then pushed right on past. He knelt by my side, and looked yet again into my eyes.

"I'm so sorry, Jade. I didn't mean to–" He started, but was cut off when I made my move. I gently brushed my lips on his to get him to shut up. Ash's reaction=priceless.

"I know," I said, understanding what he had done what he did. "But we have more important things to pay attention to then arguing over me." I said with a pointed look at both boys.

"How's that leg?" Mark asked tenderly, desperate to get off the awkward subject.

"Better. Thanks so much for bandaging it again." I asked, then remembered the purpose of getting up. "Where are Cassie and Nathan?" I asked.

"They went back to the Aether to get supplies." Ash cut in before Mark could answer.

"Oh no... plans... raid... Center of Light..." I mumbled. Both boys looked at me more closely, their faces showing their obvious concern. "When I was in the cave, I eavesdropped on Derek and another demon. Their leader, by the looks of him. They said something about raiding the Center of Light, and destroying life sources." I clarified.

"We need to get going, then." Mark said, and without waiting for Ash, took off towards the sky.
