Martyr

Jade Kapan just might be the most normal person you could meet. But don't jump to conclusions, because you couldn't be more wrong. And she has no idea. No idea that the angels fight demons constantly just to keep the humans safe. No idea that she can change the whole course of the war. The only thing is, will she have the strength to make a vital decision?

14. Fighting

I exited the armory followed by Mark, then met up with Bruce. Ash wasn't there, and according to Bruce, had gone to look for Cassie and Nathan.

"So, how are the demons even gonna get into the Aether?" I asked, perplexed.

"They're probably going to make multiple vapor trails. Vapor trails are bridges that consist of dark matter, so only demons can travel on theirs, and angels can only travel on light trails." Bruce explained.

"Jade!" I heard a squeal from behind me. Cassie was charging full speed towards me, and let me tell you, if you have never been charged by and enthusiastic Cassie, you have never been truly afraid. She collided with me, winding me as well as knocking me over. Once my vision cleared, I looked up and noticed that Ash had shown up as well. We both stood up awkwardly, when Mark broke the silence.

"Um... er, we should get to our stations." The angels set up their armies in various ways. When they were defending, they had strategically placed troops surrounding what they were protecting. We would be in one of the middle troops, since it was my first battle.

No sooner had we gotten into place then the war horn sounded. That one sad note echoed around, having a different impact on each angel. Suddenly, I felt a rush of confidence. I could do this. I would fight the demons and win. I looked at Mark, who answered the unasked question on my face.

"The horn calms any nerve that the troops feel before a battle. It's magic." I nodded in reply.

A magic horn that made you feel good. Sure, why not?

Suddenly, thick black mist swirled around me, and I could no longer see anyone. I heard growling echoing towards me from all directions. I heard screams of terror and agony coming from the troops of angels that surrounded me. They were beginning to sound distant. Was this supposed to be happening?

"Mark!" I called out desperately. Suddenly, the mist in front of me darkened. Out stepped the terrifying leader demon that I had spotted from my perch in the cave.

"Who– who are you?" I asked, my voice shaking in fear.

"Me?" He asked rhetorically. "Oh, I have many names. The Dark One, Your Worst Nightmare, and my most common name, Satan." He luged at me on that last word, and I swung my sword in reply. He was just toying with me, so I didn't even end up getting close.

"What do you want?" I had gained general control over my nerves, and, to my satisfaction, my voice was as cold as steel.

"I want your corpse in my hands, your skin on my cloak, and your consciousness in the body of a demon." He replied. I opened my wings, and jumped off the ground in an attempt to escape, but I slammed back to the ground so hard, my breath left me in a huff and my vision went red.

"I wouldn't try anything if I were you, Jade Kapan. After all, we have all of your loved ones held captive." He sneered.
