Chapter 10

I can’t believe what a state he’s in when I see him because he’s asleep but he can’t wake up. I’m sure there’s a word for that but I can’t remember.

“Liliana, the doctor said that he had an anaphylactic shock.” Says gran

“What does that mean?” I ask

“It means his airway in his throat has closed up and luckily he got medical attention very quickly so he should be ok.” Explains grandpa

Ring Ring, someone’s phone is ringing; oh wait it’s my phone.

“Hello,” I say speaking into the phone

“Hi sweetie its mum, I was wondering if you were ok.” Says mum

I pass the phone to grandpa and run to the toilets to cry. Grandpa tells mum about Brooklyn and gran comes to find me.

“Its ok love, why don’t you come and speak to mum,” gran says

“No, I don’t think I want to speak to her.” I say

“I know it’s been hard for you but it wasn’t her fault, she didn’t know she was going to have to rush off to France like that to find your father.” Points out gran

I cover my ears because I’ve had too much sympathy today and I have a headache.

“Ok, I will tell her you don’t feel like talking.”

As gran is about to leave I call her and say: “thanks”, she smiles and carries on walking to where grandpa is standing.

“Stupid mum, why did she have to leave?” I whisper to myself

I think of silly reasons of why she left even though I know it was to find dad. I cry for a few minutes then pull myself together and walk back and stand with gran and grandpa

“How’s Brooklyn doing?” I ask

“He’s doing ok.” Says grandpa

Grandpa passes me my phone and I find some games on it so I play them until were aloud to go and see Brooklyn.

“Brooklyn, are you ok?” I ask

He doesn’t say anything he just lies there frozen with fright and pain.

“He won’t be able to talk, but you can talk to him,” says the doctor

“Thanks.” Says gran to the doctor as she leaves

I feel a tear run down my cheek and I rub it away quickly, I’ve done enough crying today and I don’t want to do anymore.

“Its alright, he’s going to be fine.” Says gran placing her hand on my shoulder

“I know, he’s a fighter isn’t he?” I say

I make myself believe that and think of positive things so I don’t cry again.

“When can he come home?” I ask the doctor when she returns

“He will have to stay here over night so we can check he’s getting better, but I think it would be best if you went home.” The doctor explains

“Why can’t I stay with him? He will want to see a familiar face when he wakes up wont he?” I ask

They finally persuade me to go home, but the journey home is terrible we don’t speak and grandpa has this horrible music playing on the radio almost at full blast.

“Could you turn it down please, I have a headache.” I ask sharply but politely

“Sorry sweetheart, what do you like listening to?” grandpa asks whilst turning it down

“You like listening to that Justin beiber guy, I bet” says gran

“No actually, I like listening to Jessie j and Olly murs.” I explain

“Who?” asks Grandpa

“No one.” I say

At that point I must have fallen asleep because I don’t remember the rest of the journey back to gran and grandpas house.

“Wake up.” Gran says shaking me

“What time is it?” I ask

“Its 11:30.” Gran says

“Oh no, I’ve missed most of school.” I say

“Don’t worry we phoned school and said that you weren’t coming in today because your going to see Brooklyn,” gran explains

I’m really thanking gran for letting me have the day off, I doubt mum would of let me have the day off even if I was ill.

“We need to go at 12:30 so you need to get up soon and get ready to go.” She says

“Ok, is Brooklyn allowed to come out of hospital today?” I ask curious

“We will find out, ok.”

“Yeh.” I answer

Once I get dressed and ready to go gran and grandpa are still not ready, there running around like headless chicken.

“I’m ready,” I say

“Have you had breakfast?” grandpa asks

“No, but I’m not hungry.” I explain

“You have to eat something.” Gran says

They make me bring a banana in the car and nag and nag and nag me until I finally eat it.

“Ok, I’m eating it, I’m eating it.” I say with my mouth full of banana

When we finally get to the hospital and its 12:45 but it didn’t really matter what time we got there just As long as it wasn’t really really late.

“Hi, were here to see Brooklyn.” Gran says to the lady at reception

“Last name please.” She asks

“Mctestly, Brooklyn Mctestly.” Gran says

“Ok, could you take a seat please, the doctors wont be a minute there just busy with him now ok.” Says

I don’t like that lady at the counter she seems really grumpy and unfriendly.

“How long will we have to wait?” I ask no one in particular

“Not long.” Grandpa answers

He was wrong we had to wait about an hour until we could go in but it was worth it because we got to see Brooklyn.

“Hi, how are you?” I ask forgetting he cant talk

“I’m fine thanks.” Says a croaky voice coming from Brooklyn

“You can talk.” I say happily sitting down on Brooklyn’s bed beside him

“Yeh, they did some kind of operation on my throat, I didn’t really understand it when they told me what they were doing before they put me to sleep.” He explains

“Its ok, I doubt I would of understood it either.” I say

I smile at Brooklyn and for some reason he smiles back. Before Whenever

I used to smile at him he used to stick his tongue out or look away.

“Are you allowed to come home today?” I ask

“I hope so.” Brooklyn says

“Mr and Mrs. Grinerty, could I just speak to you.” Asks one of the nurses

Mr and Mrs. Grinerty are gran and grandpa. Because mum got married her surname was changed to mctestly.

“Liliana could I just see you a minute?” says gran making me jump

“Yeh, what is it?” I ask when were out the room

“I don’t know how to say this urm, the doctor told me that Brooklyn was getting better and has recovered from his anaphylactic shock but he has been diagnosed with cancer.” Says gran slowly
