7. The Coziest Night and Morning

Sophie loved the taste of the warm mashed potato on her tongue. She was sitting with her Dad on the sofa bed, eating dinner. The TV was blaring out an old sketch show, which her Dad had video taped. It was so funny, giving Sophie a load of ideas. It was dark outside, and the street lights were making the room glow.

Sophie didn't often bother with pajamas- she just wore her Dad's baggy old t-shirts, and she was that night. Since he'd been gone, she'd had to make do with her Mum's silk nighties from when she was younger, which made Sophie feel cold.

"This is hilarious!" she laughed, cutting some sausage. "Mum would NEVER let me watch this!"

" I know!" Her Dad said. "It's getting kinda late- why don't you finish off your dinner and hit the hay?"

"Mm!" Sophie agreed, finishing her last mouthful. She scraped her plate into the trash bag, kissed her Dad goodnight and hopped behind the curtain. he tied her hair into a messy bun- she always did before bed- and hopped in.

The pizza shop below was only open Monday to Thursday, but the smell was still there. And soon Sophie was shivering; the thin sheet just wasn't warm enough, but Sophie didn't want to complain to her Dad. She snuggled up, and at some point she must have fallen asleep.

The next morning, Sophie crept up. Her Dad was propped up on the sofa bed, tucking into some cereal.

"Morning, honey!" He said. "Sleep well?" Sophie nodded, fixing herself some toast. "Hey, Soph, come and sit down. I want you to tell me something,"

"No, I don't like that weird Hawaiian shirt that you've been hoarding," Sophie joked. Her Dad laughed.

"No, sweetie, somehow that isn't it. I want you to tell me all about your school,"

"Why?"

"Because, I don't know that much, that was always your mother's thing. But, come on now, let's chat......"
