2. Okay Day, Bad News

"Homework sucks!" Sophie said that evening, crouching over her math book. Her dinner was on the table next to her, but she hadn't eaten a bite. Her Mum and Dad sat opposite her.

"Please eat something, Sophie," her Dad said.

"In a minute!" Sophie replied. She was desperately trying to draw a flow chart. "It's not that I don't want to eat anything, I'm just busy!"

"Yes, but just eat!" Sophie's Mum pushed, "I made you this lovely pasta bake! C'mon, please!" Sophie rolled her eyes, picked up her spoon and took a mouthful. The delicious, cheesy pasta made her want even more, but her homework kept calling. She grabbed her pencil and ruler and carried on. Her Mum and Dad tutted.

"Look," Her Mum began, "Sophie, we have something to tell you." Sophie bit her lip. "Me and your Dad... we're going to split up." Sophie almost choked on her orange squash.

"SPLIT UP?" She yelled. "Why?"

"Because," her Dad said, "We're not very happy. In fact, we've already signed papers. We're sorry that we didn't tell you."

"But, but... who am I going to be living with?"

"Me," Sophie's mother said. "And your Dad will find a flat somewhere. You'll be staying with him every Friday, until Monday morning," Sophie almost cried. She tore up her homework, picked up her pasta bowl and threw it over the table. Then she grabbed her shoes and walked right out of the door, her parents calling after her.

She wandered down the street into a nearby underpass, then she sat down, put her head on her knees, and cried.

Sophie was walking back up to her home. Her cheeks were damp as she'd been crying, and she was carrying her shoes because they were hurting her heels. She was very nervous as she pushed open the front door, and saw her parents arguing on the sofa in the front room. Sophie started crying again, but when her Mum and Dad looked up, she ran up to her room.
