18. Chapter Eighteen

"So, where did you disappear to last night?"

I turned around to see Max standing behind me, her arms folded.

Shrugging, I replied, "I couldn't sleep so I went outside. I met someone."

Max turned and walked away, collapsing onto her bed and snatching up a magazine from the cabinet beside her head. She flipped through the pages, her mind clearly elsewhere, as I gathered my things neatly and threw a towel over my shoulder, eyeing off the bathroom door.

I took one step before she broke. "Who?"

I smiled to myself and shrugged again. "Ryder Mason."

That night I dreamt a funny and almost frightening dream. It started where I was walking through the gardens and had snuck out at night to the wood that surrounded the school. It was a chilly night and I was silently begging for a warm cloth to wrap around my shoulders. Before I knew it, a generated heat was radiating through me and with a click of my fingers a small, blazing fire sat on the ground before me. I didn't even seem shocked at the sudden appearance of it.

I heard sticks crack behind me and harsh breathing making the bushes shake. A cold rush of air closed in around me and a small ball of light popped up next to my head, lighting up a circle of light around me.

Markis stepped out from behind a thick tree and grinned, only he wasn't human. Standing on all fours in front of me was a furry coated wolf with husky brown eyes and ginger fur. His paws were heavy as he walked towards me and I had a sudden thought that the ground might shake if I were to offend him in any way.

Markis' long snout was wet and small lines of drool dripped from the sides of his smiling mouth. The dream me didn't seem at all startled and acted almost ... humble.

You're one extremely powerful fairy, Sophie.

     Not as much as you.

True, the wolf sighed, but I can't make it snow when it's 50 degrees or light up a dark room with a floating ball of light.

You're wrong. I am more powerful than you.

Markis in wolf form snorted and shook his broad shoulders with laughter. I started towards him and gripped the back of his ear, massaging in the hollow beneath it. The werewolf let out a groan and I smiled.

     I love you, Sophie.

The dream me felt a flutter in their stomach and relaxed at the wolf's mind words.

     I love you, Markis.
