Say My Last Farewell

This is about a Filipina teenager who fell in love with the most unexpected person in the most unexpected time. Does that mean a bad ending or a good one? In the process, readers will encounter Filipino words where you can learn and understand through the little dictionary below each chapter to use as reference. This story is not connected in anyone in real life and scenario but if any story is related, it is a big coincidence. This story is inspired in common Filipino lifestyle in the past during colonization of foreigners in the Philippines. [Reference are provided to keep readers from getting confused] [Author might have messed up with the Philippine History timeline but other than that, the words in the reference are facts.]

2. ONE

THE MORNING sunshine is spreading its way in Maria Gomez' room making the 3-side-mirror in front of her grow brighter barely making view of her reflection. Mrs. Karp Gomez, often called as Donya Sonya by the people is leaning at the cabinet, softly tapping her fingers against it as she eyes the Filipiniana gown Maria is wearing.

Maria Gomez with her sweet loving identity smiles to portray the gown.

"Next," Donya Karp declares as Lourdes jumps to her feet to grab for another design of Filipiniana gown. "What kind of designer are you? You think your dresses deserve to be worn in tonight's celebration?" says Donya Karp sharply as she squared her arms and faced Lourdes with her eyebrows connecting. "If you can't do your job well, I can replace you."

Tonight will be a big night, the awaited one. It is a celebration for selected friends, particularly rich ones, to gather around. It was rumored to be about big news to be revealed. Some people think it is amazing, but for someone like Maria, she thinks it’s a waste of time and money, but after all, isn't it the objective of Mr. Santos to show off his possessions? Well, unless if the rumor about the party is true, then it sounds fine.

"Pasensya po," Lourdes murmurs in apology as she gathers some fabrics in a hug. There are number of people frightened of Donya Karp's strictness but they feared more from her husband, Don Arturo Gomez. Their four children are among the few they've scared but Maria who is likely hiding extreme strength in her demure attitude.

The room falls into silence leaving the ticking of the clock the only sound heard.

"Can you please allow me choose?" Maria offers, breaking the heavy silence in her room.

"Very well," replies Donya Karp challenging her daughter.

Making her way towards Lourdes who is in difficulty in carrying the gowns, Maria cranes and study the garments carefully as she traces the sleeves with her delicate hands until it landed on a red Filipiniana gown designed with lovely white shimmering floral from neckline curling its way downward. She takes it with a smile on her face showing off her approval and turns to face her mother with the long red gown in hand.

             "How about this?"

Expecting for a reply, all that escapes Donya Karp's mouth was a long sound of "Hmmm."

Lourdes is still clinging to her different designed clothes but taken by surprise when Maria decided to try the only red suit in her closet of Filipiniana gowns. "But I thought you don't like red Miss Maria," she doubts in a soft whisper of puzzlement as if Maria had mistaken her choice.

Even in the back of the mirror trying on the gown, Maria heard her and replies, "Oh yes Lourdes, but sometimes we have to try something new. We can't be the same forever; life is too short!” Again, Maria inspects herself at the mirror.

No denying that Maria is aware of her charm and that you prove her beauty through her suitors. She doesn't count but there are dozens of them. As vain as she could, she loves looking good as how she loves it when people praise her. Different young men come to their mansion to offer something for the Princess of the family. Being the youngest and only daughter of the Gomez couples, she is loved and cared especially with her brothers that stand as her warriors, very protective that sometimes she could find jokes about it.

She stares in the reflection that stands before her. Her usually tousled hair was smoothened and straightened. She's got red lips that often curve into a dazzling smile together with her dark brown eyes but those smiles are nowhere to be seen now. Her skin seemed a little lighter from the others but it’s not as light as those of Americans which is really quite common to Filipinos but since Spanish blood from her Grandparents have mixed with her Filipino blood, the outcome separates her beauty to stand out.

"Finally, after two hours…" Exclaims her mother and added, "Maganda."

Maria freezes and in the corner of her eyes she sense that Lourdes is also bewildered. Complimenting is too uncommon to hear from her mother for her tastes are too high and that approval from her makes Maria wants to cry in disbelief.

"Thanks." She gasps in gratitude but before the word came out from her mouth, a bang from the door echoed her.

                And her mom is out.

Lourdes' and Maria's eyes meet in the frozen air and shrugs. Lourdes bites her lower lip to suppress a nervous giggle and in just a moment the room is filled with chortle of disbelief.
