In The Dark Of The Night

When Anastacia moves to the city of London to rid herself of adult responsibilities and experience the nightlife, she meets Louis, a dark handsome man that owns the night club down the road. But when she's eerily drawn to him and starts to lose valuable memories she questions who he really is...

Anastacia wriggled uncomfortably in her seat, her thoughts elsewhere as Louis and her mother dabbled in mixed conversations.  "Anastacia darlin', are you alright?" her mother asked, taking a sip of her tea and smiling lovingly.  Ana nodded, stirring her now cold tea, "Yeah mom...I'm fine. Just tired, dozing off with my eyes open I guess," she covered.  Marilyn nodded and looked to Louis, "So Louis?  What do you do for a living?" she asked, pouring herself more tea and grabbing a finger sandwich off the small platter in front of her.  Louis cleared his throat and grinned, "Well as of right now I have my own string of night clubs in London and I'm in the process of being the proud owner of a restaurant in the city as well," he smiled.  Marilyn smiled and nodded, clearly not liking his answer.  Anastacia rolled her eyes knowing that the answer she was expecting was something along the lines of "getting my PhD" or "Lawyer".  "So mom how have the kids been?" Anastacia asked, trying to change the subject as quick as possible.  Marilyn shifted in her chair and pushed back a loose strand of hair, "Umm well, their with your Aunt Josie on the other side of town," she scoffed. "And why is that?" Ana pushed, pulling her chair closer to the table and her face becoming red with anger, already knowing the answer before she even asked it.  "Not now Ana!" hissed her mother, breathing deeply and sitting back in her chair.  Louis coughed, "Well um Mrs. Leighton...I think I've had my fill of tea, would you like to get going?" he asked, breaking the silence between the mother and daughter.  Mrs. Leighton nodded and smiled, standing up and leaving a $20 on the table and walking towards the door.  Ana pushed in her chair and shook her head, her anger growing in her small body, "Ana love,  what's going on?" Louis asked, rubbing her cheek softly.  "Nothing Lou...I'll tell you later, alright?" she spoke, walking out the door and to the car where her mother was waiting.

Anastacia walked out to the garden that flourished in her backyard, the smell of roses and cherry blossoms tickling her nose.  She walked along the grass and sat down at the small water fountain, allowing her mind to relax as she watched the water spray out of the top of the fountain and trickle down into the small pool below.  Click! Ana jumped and turned to Louis, who was crouched on the bright green grass, a camera in his hand.  "Sorry..I didn't mean to frighten you.  But I couldn't pass up the look gorgeous," he explained, sitting down next to her and placing the camera next to his feet, "What's wrong love?" he asked, rubbing his thumb across her knee.  "Do you want to know why I left it here?" Ana asked, looking to Louis, her face a mixture of sadness and anger.  "I left because I was sick of the abuse, the yelling and not being heard, having to put on a smile when we had to go out to tea every Sunday so others didn't take notice," she began, brushing her fingertips along the top of the water.  "My father is a drunk, my mother can't leave him, I was a punching bag.  So I packed up and left and found Justin at my first job.  Eventually we moved in together after about a month and then I met you," she explained.  Louis smiled and pulled her close to him, wrapping his arms around her waist and hushing her softly as she began to cry.  "And I can't do anything Lou.  I can't make things better. I expected to come back and for things to be different but they aren't, Lou...they're falling apart," she cried, hiding her face in his chest, gripping his shirt.  Louis rubbed her back softly, brushing back her hair.  The sun slowly began to set as Anastacia's tears began to let up, her body becoming weak with tired as she calmed down.  Louis picked her up bridal style and carried her inside and to her room, taking off her shoes and her jeans before tucking her into bed,  "Thank you Lou," she whispered, half asleep.
