9. Chapter 8 - Harry

Lauren was sitting opposite me: delicate, small and her head bowed down. Her hands were wrapped around the steaming mug of hot chocolate, which she gently put to her lips. We were all drinking some form of hot drink; I had a mug of coffee lodged in my hands.

The typical weather for Britain in January was cold. And rain. More cold. And even more rain. And sometimes I wonder why people actually want to live in England. Honestly, are they mad?

Right now, the rain pattered down on the windows heavily, the view obscured because of it. The easterly wind made the rain slanted, which wasn’t very helpful to those walking in the opposite direction of it.

“Spill,” Zayn said after five minutes of pretending to drink, but not actually drinking because it was too hot.

Lauren put the mug down, sighed and twisted her hands on her lap. I could hear her gulp loudly. She motioned for us to come closer, bending her head in the process.

“Right,” she said. “You mustn’t tell anyone about this. From this moment on, you’re in danger, OK?” We nodded our heads.

“When I was eight, this man kidnapped me from the park near my home. I have no idea who, what or where he is, but all I know is this. He kidnapped me, and attempted to kill me by demolishing a building and it crashing down on me. I managed to stay alive, luckily, and could continue my life normally. But then the year after my dad died.” She roughly wiped under her eyes and hastily added, “Well, murdered, to be precise.”

“Stop getting all mushy on us and trying to soften us up,” Louis muttered.

Lauren carried on. “The police haven’t found the murderer yet, but I have a strong feeling it’s that man. He follows me everywhere, and I’m scared. And everything happening in the foster home doesn’t entirely help my fears,” she chuckled lightly.

“I just want a normal life, to be honest,” she completed, sighing wistfully.

“Yeah, well you aren’t going to get one with us, that’s for sure!” Niall laughed loudly.

Lauren nodded in agreement. “That’s a valid point. But my version of normal is just having people who love and care for me, who will protect me like I’m their daughter. I don’t care who they are, they’re fame or how rich or poor they are, I just want someone to adopt me. If you don’t feel as if you could meet my needs, or love me like I’m your daughter, then in all seriousness, please don’t keep my hopes up and go find someone else. I don’t want to be played with.”

There was silence for a full ten minutes. I reflected on what she said – would I be a good person to look after her? Could I love her like she was my real daughter?

“I want to adopt you,” I came out with.

“Really?” Lauren’s eyes widened.

“After everything I said?” she said sceptically.

“Yes. I believe I could love and cherish you like daughter.” Daughter, yeah right.

Lauren smiled widely. “Thanks. But it’s not just up to you, you know.” She pointed to the four boys witnessing our conversation.

“Ah, yes, well.” I cleared my throat quietly. “What do you think guys? I definitely enjoyed today.”

“I want to,” Niall said, gulping down his drink.

“I guess so,” Zayn said. “As long as you don’t do crazy things.”

“I won’t,” Lauren promised.

“It’s a big responsibility, don’t you think?” Liam thought.

“But she needs to be adopted,” I pleaded. “And she’s fifteen. She can look after herself. She just needs that extra bit of care which we can give.”

“Um,” Liam hummed. “Okay, okay. I want to, too. I was just deciding who to listen to.”

“And who was that?” Louis asked.

“My heart, obviously.”

“Louis?” We all turned to look at him.

“I don’t want to,” Louis protested. I could see Lauren’s smile falling. “But since I’m outnumbered, I suppose so.”

“Great!” I shouted, punching the air. I got strange looks from the customers.

“What do you do now?” Lauren asked once I had ‘composed’ myself.

“I think you spend a night with us, to see how it goes,” Niall said.

“And then you get to live with us, but you can go back any time,” Liam added.

“No chance,” I muttered under my breath.

“Have a good time, Lauren. Keep me updated!” Mrs Hattinaire said, giving Lauren a hug and patting her on the back.

“She will,” Niall said, lightly pulling her towards their car. Its windows were darkly tinted.

“So, what are we going to be doing?” She asked when the car started moving.

“That’s a secret,” I said, nudging her arm gently.

She grinned at me. “Whatever it is, I can’t wait.”
