8. Chapter 7 - Lauren

The light brown grains glistened in the sun - sparkling, full of beauty and warmth. The crash of the waves calmed me; the salt spraying over the sand. My right cheek was frozen to the bone, yet my left cheek was warmed by the sun rays. The contrast strangely made me feel comforted and relaxed.

I was walking along the coast of Bournemouth, down south of England. The English channel was to the left of me, the tall wall and barrier to the right of me. The boys (AKA One Direction) had decided to take me for a day out. They asked me where I wanted to go, and of course I said here. Bournemouth beach. Full of memories that filled me with joy and regret. I guess I was being sort of a therapist to myself – telling myself to welcome the events of my life.

The silence wasn’t entirely awkward, it was more of a spoken silence. I inhaled deeply; the salty hair stinging my nose a little, but the smell was comforting. My feet barely sank in the sand for I was bouncing lightly. Ahead of me, I could see the north pier. I squinted and focused on one of the stalls, assuming it sold ice cream.

Harry was walking close to me, closer than people normally did. His body heat radiated onto me and the chilliness my right side was trapped in gradually came a little warmer. Not by much, but a little. Niall was walking to the left of my, starting to block some of the rays that was temporarily warming my cheek.

“Can we get some ice cream, please?” I asked, pointing to the ice cream stall. “I’m a bit hungry.”

Harry followed my point and his eyebrows creased. “Damn, Louis. I seriously think I need to eat more carrots,” he said chuckling.

“That’s not an ice cream stall,” Louis snapped. I swallowed lightly. I wasn’t used to getting snapped at.

“Sorry,” I whispered, looking down and focusing on my footsteps.

“Isn’t that a doughnut stall?” Liam said.

“I definitely need something warm,” Harry joked, rubbing his arms. After a few moments silence, he yelped quietly. “Too much friction, too much friction.”

My lips curved up slightly. I folded my arms and rubbed my arms at a moderate speed. I did this for a few minutes, but stopped because of the slight ache in my upper arm.

“I want hot chocolate, it’s too cold,” Niall moaned.

“Is there any cafés near here, Lauren?” Liam asked.

Racking my brain for a memory, I replied, “Yes. There is one a few streets away.”

“Does it sell carrots?” Louis muttered. I desperately tried to keep in my thoughts, because I should be trying to persuade them to adopt me. But Louis was just way too annoying.

“Why do you always talk about carrots?” I shouted, stopping suddenly.

“Why do you always show off?” he mimicked.

“How do I show off?”

“I can play the piano, guitar, clarinet blah blah blah,” he squeaked.

“I was just telling you what my hobbies were. You asked!” I shrieked.

“Aw, on your period, are you?” he mocked, cocking his head to the side and pretending to be soothing.

“Don’t blame periods for everything, you twat!” I screamed. “You know nothing, ok? Nothing!”

“Lauren, calm down,” Niall said, holding my shoulders.

“No!” I cringed away from his touch. It reminded me of him. I couldn’t even bring myself to think his name.

“Come on, Lauren. You know you want to,” he smirked, walking closer to me.

“Daddy!” I screamed, gripping the crumbling bricks with my blunt nails.

“He’s busy, with my colleagues,” he mocked.

“Daddy!” I screamed louder, just as the wall crashed on me.

I looked around me in a rush. Somehow, I could feel his presence near me. In the corner of an abandoned shed, I could see the familiar silhouette.

“Get away from me!” My scream pierced the air. “Stop following me!”

He waved and got in a car, driving off. He stared at me the whole time. My body began to violently shiver. The way he looked at me sent chills through my body. Unstoppable chills.

I could feel the dampness of my top, and realised that it was soaked with my tears.

“I’m sorry, I, I’m so sorry,” I whispered before pulling my top off and pulling my jeans off, revealing black leggings underneath. I dove into the sea, the calmness spreading around me.

I opened my eyes, blinking several times for the sting of the salt to go. The fish swam around me, articulate and peaceful. After half a minute, my face broke through the surface, just as Harry and Niall simultaneously dove in. I took a few deep breaths, did a forward role and got out of the sea, smiling lightly. I steadied my breathing and took my jeans and top.

“What the hell?” Zayn shouted. “Are you suicidal?” I may be mad. I may have a complicated life. But I would never kill myself. That’s just pathetic and wasteful.

“I would never kill myself Zayn,” I said firmly.

“Why were you screaming at that car and stripping and staying in the water for minutes?”

“I was in the water for half a minute, Zayn, several minutes,” I corrected.

“What about that screaming before, huh? I’m sure we’d like to hear an explanation for that, don’t you?” he turned at the others, who nodded in response and looked slightly angry.

“I’m sorry,” I said shakily. “I can’t tell you.”

“Why not?” Zayn shouted. I flinched at the volume. “If we’re going to be your adoptive parents, we should know your life story, don’t you agree?”

I nodded quickly. “Then explain yourself!”

“I can’t,” I said, my voice cracking.

“Why?” he boomed.

“It’s dangerous.”

“For who? For me? For us?”

I looked up and whimpered quietly. “Both,” I said, barely audible.

“Why?” Liam broke in.

“He’s dangerous,” I started. “Real dangerous. My life isn’t simple, you know.”

I looked straight into Harry’s eyes, fear of reject. But there wasn’t. There was fear, protection and, love?
