6. Chapter 5 - Lauren

“Carrots? Do I like carrots?” I repeated in disbelief.

“Yeah!” Louis said, bouncing up and down.

“Well,” I started. “They’re good for your eyesight?”

“But do you like them?” he asked impatiently. I looked around the room. All the boys were staring at me. They mouthed yes, but Harry mouthed no to me.

Furrowing my eyebrows, I replied back with nonchalantly. “They’re alright, I suppose. But they have a bit of a bland taste, don’t you think?” I looked around the boys for agreement. Zayn, Niall and Liam looked on in fake fright, whereas Harry grinned in delight.

“Did you just call carrots bland?” Louis asked slowly.

“Um, I’m sure I did,” I replied back, unfazed by his disbelief.

“How could you, you monster!” he shouted, making me jump in shock. I darted my eyes around in confusion. They’re just carrots, right? I thought. “Do you know how many carrots’ feelings you have hurt?!”

“Um…. Carrots don’t have feelings though?” I said in lots of wonder. I was starting to think that Louis was a bit mental.

Zayn, Niall and Liam looked shocked, and looked worriedly between Louis and I. Harry looked impressed.

Louis retrieved a carrot from his rucksack and cradled it lovingly like a baby. “There there, my dear. Cover your ears. She’s talking nonsense that one is.”

“But Louis-“

“Alright, alright, let’s move on to the next question, shall we?” Liam interrupted. I nodded cautiously, wondering if there were going to be any more weird questions.

“What’s your hobbies?” Niall asked, looking genuinely interested.

“Well,” I said, thinking over the question. “I love playing the piano and guitar. And I love writing songs. I’ve already written twelve and named my album ‘Fearless’.”

“Really?” Niall said, gobsmacked. I nodded, smiling. I knew that he played the guitar.

“You write songs?” Zayn asked.

“Yeah, I love it so much. I might pursue it as a career,” I said, smiling. “But I’m not sure though,” I quickly added.

“Is there any instrumental music in any of your songs?” Harry asked.

“I play the piano, guitar or both in my songs. I can play basic violin as well and the clarinet; I learnt them one summer because I was bored. But dominantly, I’m best at piano and guitar and I’ve had lessons since I was four years old and I still have them. My teacher is a wonderful woman.”

“Play us one of your songs,” Harry urged, nudging my upper arm lightly. I winced in pain, but quickly covered that up. I think Harry saw it though; the expression on his face looked a little like pity.

“I can’t,” I said hesitantly.

“Yes you can!” Niall said.

“I’m a terrible singer,” I said, embarrassed.

“We just want to hear the lyrics,” he urged.

I sighed deeply, and gave in. “Fine, but only one,” I said, holding up a finger.

“Yay!” Niall clapped his hands like a little girl. I rolled my eyes.

“Which instrument are playing with?” Harry asked.

“The guitar. The song is called ‘Letting go’ and it’s the first song I wrote when I was thirteen. Remember, I’m not a good singer,” I warned, picking up my guitar and placing my fingers on some of the strings.

“We just want to hear the lyrics, love,” Harry said, smiling lightly.

I smiled back, and then started strumming.

When I put down the guitar, I looked at them expectantly.

“Well,” Louis said. “You’re never becoming a singer, that’s for sure.”

“Louis!” Niall exclaimed. “That’s really rude.” Louis stuck his tongue out.

“I thought it was wonderful,” Liam said thoughtfully. “Yes, you’re singing isn’t record-singing, but the lyrics are fabulous.”

“I agree,” Harry said.

“I loved the guitar playing,” Niall said excitedly. “It’s awesome!”

“Thanks guys, it really means a lot to me. I’ve never sang any of my songs before,” I said, blushing.

“Aw, you’re cute when you blush,” Harry said, watching me squirm and blush even more.

“Thank you,” I whispered, looking down at the ground while feeling my cheeks heat up.

“Anyway,” Zayn said, clapping his hands. “Any more questions?”

“Well,” Liam said. “Since we’re considering adopting you, we should know about your past, right?”

I gulped loudly. I knew this had been coming, but I couldn’t talk about it without, well, I don’t know. I haven’t talked about this to anyone. Which is bad, but there is no one to talk to.

“Um,” I said. Harry gave Liam a cold glare which I noticed.

“But we’ve already seen her file, do we have to ask her?” Niall complained.

My eyes widened. Our files were supposed to be private; only the workers and social workers could access them.

“You saw my file?” I squeaked, panicking for no plausible reason.

“Don’t you think we should hear Lauren’s side of her life? That might not even be true,” Liam argued, ignoring my outburst.

Harry sighed, and then randomly rubbed my knee. I looked at him in confusion. He saw it and immediately removed his hand.

“I actually agree with Liam on this,” Zayn said.

“It’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?” Niall said.

“But we’ve got to consider Lauren’s feelings, know what we’re about to take on board,” Louis said.

“But what if she doesn’t want to talk about it? You agree with me, right Harry?” Niall looked at him hopefully.

“Actually,” he started. “Maybe it’s best, both for our and Lauren’s sake, to know her side.”

“See,” Liam pointed out, with Niall folding his arms childishly. I giggled at that. I was surprised. It was my first giggle since my sister was kidnapped. And that was over a year ago. Maybe it would be good for me to have these boys adopt me. They could restore my happiness and how I used to be. And anyway, I do need to tell someone how I feel, even if they are an internationally famous boy band.

“Okay, I’ll tell you,” I said. “Only because I think it’s necessary and I want to. Ok?”

They all nodded.

“Right, I’ll begin then.”
