Killing the Dead

Eris has always felt weird, out of place, and lost in her life. She is alone, apart from her brother Ciel, because of her eyes (left eye purple, right blue) and her unfriendlyness. But she is deadly smart, cunning, clever and curious. One day her curiosity goes too far...and she is sent into the world where the humans kill the dead...otherwise known as the Dead Hunters!

2. The Guy's Identity

The next few days went by as usual. There were only two changes:

1) The guy hadn't shown up at school after my standing up to him.

2) Because of change 1, people had been more 'open' to me, at some degree. What I did seemed like a dangerous and risky thing for that, and they stopped teasing me and some say 'hi' to me. It's weird.

Apparently, the red-haired boy, called Axel Maddox, is rumored to be a delinquent who once nearly beat a man to death and left him in an alley to rot. His piercings, unkept hair, quiet, dark demeanor, scar on his chin and fierce eyes made him look even more so.
This information was extracted from my little brother Ciel, who likes this kind of thing. He seemed so excited during his storytelling, when he finished with "...even more so," and stopped, mouth open in awe, I stare at him and say, "That's it?"

"What do you mean, 'that's it'? Is it not entertaining enough for you? You just stood up to a guy that almost killed someone, and all you say is, 'That's it?', like some sort of idiot? Are you dumb, Eris?" Ciel knew very well I was far from dumb, so when he said something like this it was serious.

"Well," I start. "If he's that menacing, why did he just walk--I should say run, away from me when I said he had a nice tattoo? He looked really surprised. So--" Ciel cuts me off.

"Tattoo? He has a tattoo? What do you mean, he has a tattoo? What are you talking about?" Ciel's newly found love-of-gossip got the best of him. His small hands went up to my shoulders and he shook them. He looked hungry for info.

"Yeah," I say, surprised. "That tattoo with the overlapping squares. Under his right ear. You don't know?"

My little brother sat back down on the bench in the park where we were sitting. He stared at his feet, frowning. "No. As far as I know, no one knows anyone about a tattoo. Was it big?" I shake my head. "Huh...overlapping squares...I should investigate..." I roll my eyes.

"Come on, Ciel, let's go home." When he doesn't move as I stand up, I grab his legs and dangle him upside down. He laughs, tells me he'll go, and I set him down. The walk is quiet.

I thought it was strange that Ciel didn't know about the tattoo. He knew about pretty much everyone's personal life. Why didn't he know about a small thing like this?

My thoughts then strayed to school work and house chores. Ciel started talking about a new kid at school and his suspicions about him, but I don't listen.

When me and my brother nearly reach the gate to our house, I see something from the corner of my eye, in the forest. I whip around. There was Axel Maddox, watching me. I blinked, and he had gone.

"Eris? Is something wrong?" asks my brother.

I turn to him. "No, kiddo, nothing's wrong." We enter the house, waiting for the next day.
