Killing the Dead

Eris has always felt weird, out of place, and lost in her life. She is alone, apart from her brother Ciel, because of her eyes (left eye purple, right blue) and her unfriendlyness. But she is deadly smart, cunning, clever and curious. One day her curiosity goes too far...and she is sent into the world where the humans kill the dead...otherwise known as the Dead Hunters!

6. Ciel: In French, Sky

I burst through the door of my house and sink to my knees, panting like a dog. Though the Noises are gone, I can still hear them, laughing, chanting, marching, giggling in my mind. I shut my ears, but they seem louder. Then I begin to yell. "Aaaah! Shut UP! Shut UP! Leave me alone!..." Then I feel the cold hands around my shoulders again. I start to struggle and thrash around. But this time, the hands let go, and I hear the voice of the sky, my sky, my brother Ciel. I begin to calm down to the tune of my brother's voice.

When I become silent, my brother asks, "Eris! Where were you? I was just about to go looking for you, you never come this late! What happened?" When it becomes clear to him that I won't answer, he gets up, brings water from the kitchen and gives it to my trembling hands. I drink it and slowly walk up to my room. There I flop onto my bed, turn on my music to full blast and try to rest. The music helps calm me down. After I would say an hour of recovery therapy, I get up and go down to Ciel for advice.

I don't know how to put it into words. I would never tell Ciel the truth. Something like that is too dangerous for him. If I told him, he would either 1) convince me I was being delusional, which would make me feel bad, or 2) if he believed me, he would try to help me, and since his curiosity is almost larger than mine, which would make me feel guilty and protective. But I come up with something.

I approach my brother, who is reading the newspaper. Not today's newspaper, but last month's. I don't know why he does it, but when I asked him, he mumbled inaudible words.

"H-Hey, Ciel." He looks up from his paper and says, "Yes, Eris?" Like he's a father talking to a daughter.

I start. "Well, I-I was coming up for an idea f-for a story, and well, here it is." I tell him what happened in the sense I'm telling a story. I conclude and say, "What sh-should the character do next?"

He pauses for quite a while, thinking. At last, he says, "Well, I think the character should go back to the glowing trees, to the grey people world." I cannot conceal the surprise on my face. Ciel smiles. "Maybe this time, she'll be more prepared. Remember, let her expect the unexpected. It'll make her braver, and she'll discover something she didn't at first. Give it a try, Eris." He turns back to the paper. I stare at my feet and think. Then finally, I get up, already planning my journey the next day.
