9. Chapter 9

**1 Week Later**

Wiping the sweat off my forehead I collapsed on the ground, the sun was high in the sky and it was getting way too hot to work. The harvest is not even half done, there is so much left it’s laughable. But as always we’ll get it done in time. I dropped my scythe, it narrowly missed my foot but I was too tired to care. I stumbled into the shade of an apple tree and sat down, relaxing in the shadow cast by its leaves. It didn’t take long for Elias to join me; he sat down heavily beside me, throwing an arm around my shoulder and tossing me an apple. I caught it deftly taking a huge bite out of the rosy skin. He laughed as juice trickled down my bottom lip, wiping it away with his thumb. I smiled shyly at him, we’ve been courting for over a week but I still can’t believe he’s mine.  Mary rushed over to greet us, but didn’t stay long as she needed to look after her twin sisters.

His forehead creased anxiously before he continued. “The Lord’s cousin visited yesterday with news of a great plague from London. Apparently it’s been sweeping the country from the East. No one knows how it happened. Of course the lord threw his cousin out immediately fearing that he would poison them. I heard all this from Henry his manservant. I’m not sure whether to believe it or not, you know what he’s like for exaggerating.” I chewed my bottom lip nervously, sure Henry liked to make up stories, but more often than not there was a seed of truth in them. “It’s okay,” Elias murmured softly. “I won’t let anything happen to you I promise.” Then without warning he brought his lips down onto mine. One hand cupped my face, the other gripped my waist. I brought my arms around his neck, entangling my fingers in his hair. My mouth was set on fire as soon as his lips touched mine; his fingertips traced a raging path across my cheek, before finding a place on my neck. I pulled him closer not wanting to let go but I knew I had to. Reluctantly I relaxed my grip and we pulled our lips apart. We rested foreheads against each other breathing softly. He still had one hand on my waist and my arms were still draped around his neck.

We stayed there for a while but were soon interrupted by the foreman shouting for us to get back to work. We pulled apart grinning at each other, “I’ll see you later,” he promised with a wink. I nodded and he walked back to work, his hair glinting in the warm sunlight. I traced my lips with my fingertips, they were still tingling slightly, Elias just kissed me...
