5. Chapter 5

The party finished late, and I crawled into bed exhausted. I was about to blow out my candle, but then remembered my diary. I rummaged under my bed until I found the wad of paper and began;

I love coming of age celebrations, they're such good fun. All the girls around age 14 dress up in their best dresses to impress the men and all the men around 16 go shirtless to impress the girls. A celebration like this is the perfect place to meet someone special. I just had my coming of age celebration, it was actually very good fun. I got mother to braid my hair to impress Elias and wore my best dress, I think he noticed. Hopefully not many others did. Although it’s not unusual for girls to dress more impressively at their coming of age celebrations. It's the first night that you really get noticed by possible courters.
Elias looked amazing, he was shirtless, but again that wasn't unusual, all the young men were shirtless. I had never noticed before how well built he is, although he has always been strong. Even though there were plenty of other girls there he only danced with me, and I only danced with him.
We were dancing until I thought I was going to collapse, but then the tune changed. It was slow, 'the mockingbirds call' it's normally only courting or married couples who dance to that, but Elias just carried on.
He was hesitant at first, asking if I was okay with it, but I was thrilled that he had chosen to dance that song with me. I rested my head on his shoulder, and was very aware of his hands at my waist. At the end of the song he twirled me around once before pulling me in towards him again. I could have sworn he wanted to kiss me, but I probably just wanted him it so much that I'm imagining it.
Earlier in the night whilst I was talking to Mary, I noticed him having a discussion with father. He looked quite serious about it to be honest. Plus I caught them looking at me and Mary a few times. Mary thinks that he was asking fathers permission to court me and although I denied it, I really hope she was right.

Exhausted I put down my quill, put the top back on the ink and went to sleep.

Elias' Diary

Alicia looked amazing tonight, I knew she would. Her hair was braided on one side, and she was wearing her best dress. From the moment I saw her, I couldn't keep my eyes off her.
I asked her father’s permission to court her, and thankfully he said yes. He seemed exceptionally pleased that I had asked and didn't hesitate in giving me an answer. Now I just have to hope that she accepts me. The traditional first gift of courtship is a basket of flowers, which she will have tomorrow morning.
We danced together the whole night and I never saw her dancing with anyone else. Although we did end up dancing 'the mockingbirds call' which usually only couples dance to, but she seemed alright.
I was quite nervous about being too overbearing but she assured me it was fine. Even though it was lovely dancing with her I feel like we shouldn't have always danced together. It must have looked very suggestive, and it didn't help the fact that I really wanted to kiss her...
I almost did. It was at the end of the dance and I twirled her away from me before pulling her back in. She looked up at me so innocently, her gorgeous brown eyes full of joy. Her lips were slightly parted, attracting all my attention. It took all my strength not to lean down and touch mine to hers.
