13. Chapter 13

The rumours... they’re all true. The Lord’s daughter has fallen ill, along with several servants. You can feel the tension in the air around here. The news has spread like wild fire, everyone knows about the Black Death, although nobody knows the cause.

There are whisperings... especially around church folk. They say that, that Mad Anne has brought a curse on us. She’s a witch, everyone knows it, but nobody is brave enough to prove it. She lives in a small cottage at the edge of the dark woods, barely ever venturing into the village. But when she does, you can hear her muttering, spells and curses. It sends shivers down your spine if you walk past her. The little ones play dares, challenging each other to walk right behind her for a minute without her noticing. They barely ever get anywhere near her.

Reverend Hughes says she should be burned at the stake, and that God has sent this curse upon us as a message, a message to burn witches. I’m not entirely sure what to believe, it can’t all be because of one witch. Besides it didn’t start here...

Elias says I should just try to live happy, who knows what’s going to happen. I guess I could distract myself by trying to get him to break his promise...
