10. Chapter 10

Elias kissed me... he actually did... I can’t believe it, after all this time. Father wasn’t too impressed when I got in- someone had obviously seen us and told him- but it could have been worse. People have done a lot worse than us when they have only been courting for a week.
If all goes well within a month I will move in with him and his father and within two months we shall be married and have our own house. It’s amazing how quickly these things happen really, but it’s easier that way. Now that I’m courting, I can’t share a bed with William anymore, it wouldn’t be proper. I do miss him though which is strange because he’s my brother and we live in the same cottage.

Even though today was the first time it hasn’t rained in a week, everyone is a bit on edge. There’s a rumour going around about a plague, people are calling it the Black Death. No one really knows whether the stories are true or not, although people have been talking about moving out of the village. It’s strange how fast things can get around the village, the Lord’s cousin only visited two days ago.

Fathers moaning at me to blow out my candle so he can sleep so I guess I should go...

Elias’ Diary

I finally kissed her; it has been over a week so it’s just about acceptable. She seemed shocked but pleased, so I’m glad I did. Even though it was the first time, it might be one of the last, if the rumours are true that is...
Apparently there is some kind of disease or plague going around. People are calling it the Black Death because it kills almost everyone, and according to Richard has wiped out whole towns. I only heard about it yesterday after church, but didn’t see Alicia as she had to look after William.

On a lighter note, our courtship is going well; Father has been doing her up a room in our house. She’ll have so much more space with us, at the moment she only lives in a cottage, but as my father is the miller he has a house. A small one admittedly, but it has proper rooms, and two floors! In just under a month she’ll move in, although we won’t be allowed to share a room, and in two months we shall be married. That is if we don’t get killed by the Black Death...

Anyway I have a surprise for her tonight so I should get going...
