5. The Meeting

When Palmer reached the Presidents house she didn’t know what to expect, she was still confused about the dream. She walked up the steps leading to the main door, two men were standing outside. They opened the door for her. A man was waiting for her.

“Follow me.” The man said. Palmer followed the man up the stairs and down the corridor to the main door. The man opened both the doors. Palmer noticed everyone was already there sitting at the big round table.

“Glad you could join us Palmer, please take a seat.” The president said gesturing to the empty seat next to McConnell. Palmer wasn’t objecting to sitting next to McConnell, he never said anything. He had a bandana covering most of his face, he has burn marks from the nuclear war ten years ago, and he doesn’t like them on show. Palmer walked and took her seat.

“Right let’s get this meeting started, most of you know what this meeting is about, but for the people who don’t I will explain.” The president began to say.

“Noah here is our spy who likes to keep an eye on the Dwellers for safety reasons; Noah has found some vital and important information, Noah if you would like to tell the rest.” The president said gesturing his hand to the man sitting next to him. Palmer noticed he had a Dweller tattoo next to right eye, to be a spy you have to be good at blending in with the crowd.

“A few days ago the small child Eve addressed the Dwellers she says that she wants to rage war with Eden, she implies to kill all of us.” Noah said in a short statement.

“Wait, so that crazy little kid that rules the Dwellers wants to rage war with us?” Finley said leaning forward.

“Yeah pretty much.” Noah said stretching. Everyone paused looking at each other’s faces of disbelief.

“But there is something else… someone is telling the child what to say, someone behind the curtains in a way.” Noah added.

“What do you mean?” Palmer asked.

“No Dweller has been in the mansion the child lives in; I snuck in and saw what was going on. A man and a couple of others are in the mansion, they are telling the child what to say.” Noah said sitting forward in his chair leaning on his elbows.

“Must have been hard sneaking in.” Drury said to Noah. Noah turned to face Drury.

                                                         “It was-.” Noah replied

“That’s where you guys come in, I need you to go to the Dwellers camp, take the child and come back.” The President addressed to everyone.

“Then why do you need me?” Palmer asked with her eyebrows raised.

“The Dwellers are coming here in two days, if you guys do not get to the child in time you will need to kill Eve when she is on the balcony, they will be lost without her.” Noah said directing it to Palmer. Palmers jaw dropped.

“So you’re telling me if they fail I will have to kill a little girl!?” Palmer shouted to President Fleming.

“I know it sounds bad but it’s one life for a thousand Palmer you have to understand.” President Fleming said in a low tone.

“That’s even low for my standards.” Finley said laughing at the end.

“Shut up Finley.” Burrell said rolling his eyes.

“Shut up Finley.” Finley mumble to himself mocking Burrell.

“What if I refuse?” Palmer said still shouting.

“Then if they fail we are all dead.” President Fleming said slowly to Palmer.

“I have seen what the Dwellers can do and they show no mercy.” Noah said with a disgusted face.

“This is our home and we are going to defend it.” Ackerman added. Palmer sat there holding her head in her hands.

“No one else can handle a sniper like you can Palmer.” Burrell said. Palmer looked up at Ackerman.

“You better not fail Ackerman.” Palmer said with a serious look on her face.

“You will have to be ready at 14 hundred hours.” The President said.

“I will come with you guys.” Noah said standing up.

“You will need my help with directions.” Noah added. Everyone stood up and left the table. Burrell and Drury left first with Finley closely behind them. McConnell nodded at Palmer and left through the doors. Palmer followed through the doors. Ackerman caught up with Palmer and walked with her.

“It’s going to be good with the old gang back together.” Ackerman said smiling at Palmer. Palmer stops and put her hand in front of Ackerman making him stop too.

“This isn’t permanent, I’m not staying.” Palmer said walking off after. Ackerman stood there not taking no for an answer from Palmer. Not because she won’t join the squad, it’s because he always felt something for Palmer even before the war, he just didn’t know what to do with the feelings…
