9. Seperate Ways

Snow started to fall heavy when Palmer and Eve found a safe haven in a building further up the street. They found a spot to stay on the third floor, a room that had a clear view of the street. Palmer and Eve leant on wall and sat there in silence until Palmer started to hear Eve shiver. Palmer notices she was only wearing a white sort of dress with no shoes or jacket. Palmer took off her jacket and placed around Eve. Palmer was bare, with only a small cropped t-shirt to cover her skin. Palmer’s knees were placed against her chest with her arms wrapped around them.

“Thank you.” Eve said in a quiet gentle tone to Palmer. Palmer didn’t answer, she didn’t know how to.

“How did you know where I was?” Palmer asked staring at her. Eve stared back.

“It’s hard to explain.” Eve said. Palmer wasn’t sure by what she meant.

“What do you mean it’s hard to explain?” Eve looked away from her.

“It’s something that I can just do.” Palmer heard stories of the child being supernatural but she never believed them.

“You’re not like other people are you?” Palmer asked curiously.

“No.” She said after a long pause. Palmer realised that she couldn’t keep her safe forever, the Dwellers will be looking for her and also people form Eden.

“The Dwellers think that your people have me.” She said answering Palmer’s question she kept asking herself over and over again.

“Well I’m going to keep you safe, no matter what.” Palmer said looking at Eve, she reminded her of her own daughter. Palmer quickly turned her head to keep watch of any trouble. Meanwhile Ackerman and the squad rushed back home to tell President Fleming the bad news. They rushed through the town ignoring the people staring and trying to stop them. They burst through the doors to Fleming’s mansion, walked through the corridor and reached the meeting room. Finley laid Drury on the big circular meeting table. Ackerman noticed one of the Presidents guards rush out of the room into a different area. Burrell stroked the side of Drury’s cheek, she was cold and pale. McConnell pushed past everyone and checked her leg. Her leg was badly blown apart from the bullet; it went straight through the bone. She lost a lot of blood.

“What happened!?” President Fleming asked rushing into the room with the guard who left the room moments ago beside him.

“The plan didn’t work.” Ackerman said calmly.

“It would have worked if it wasn’t for Palmer!” Burrell shouted furiously in Ackerman’s face. Ackerman pushed him away.

“Can you get Drury some help please?” Ackerman asked less calmly. The President asked two guards to come over from the door, they walked over with good pace to Drury. Finley stepped in front of them.

“Let me take her.” Finley said picking her up.

“I think it would be best if you went with them Burrell.” Ackerman said. As Burrell was going to step in Ackerman’s face once against McConnell stepped in the way. Burrell looked disgusted and followed the others out of the room.

“What did Palmer do?” The President asked.

“She shot me that’s what!” Noah said innocently.

“Shut up Noah!” Ackerman shouted so loud it echoed through the room. Ackerman took a deep breath in and looked at Fleming.

“Yes Palmer shot Noah but she would have had a good reason too.” Ackerman said looking at Noah curiously. Noah looked shocked.

“Don’t turn the tables on me!” Noah objectively said.

“Just tell me what happened.” The President ordered.

“Palmer shot Noah then the whole town started to shoot us. Drury got hit then we made our way out of the town. I saw Palmer run inside the town and that was the last time I saw her.” Ackerman told.

“Why would she do such a thing?” Fleming asked Ackerman. There was silence for a moment.

“Honestly I don’t know.” Ackerman replied. The President looked agitated; he quickly turned to McConnell.

“McConnell I want you to go and scout the town and see if you can see Palmer or anything strange.” The President ordered.

“Sir, if he is going then so is I.” Ackerman said.

“If you must. Noah why don’t you go with them too, it will be getting dark soon and you know your way about well.” President said to Noah.

“I don’t really want to sir…”

“I’m not asking I’m telling.” The President said angrier. The President walked to his chair around the meeting table and sat on it putting his feet up on the chair.

“And make sure the people don’t find out what happened, your failure won’t go down very well with them. Oh and wipe the blood off your face Noah.” Fleming said chucking a handkerchief from his breast pocket down the table. Noah swiftly grabbed it wiping off the dry blood from his face. As Noah was about to throw the handkerchief back President Fleming put his hand up.

“You keep it.” He said to Noah. Noah placed it in his pocket and moved away. Ackerman walked out the door and ventured outside with McConnell and Noah close behind him. Ackerman wanted to find Palmer the most out of everything, to find out the truth. They all stayed together making their way through the town. Burrell saw them through the window in the doctor’s office. The doors to Eden opened once again but with only three people, everything was going wrong. They walked with pace and an objective: to find Palmer and to discover what is truly going on. Palmer had her sniper leaning on the wall beside her with her hand gripped on it. She was trying to ignore the cold taking over her body, she felt her lips turn blue and her hands start to freeze in place. She has never felt so cold. She then looked over at Eve, sleeping wrapped up in her jacket, a hint of a smile on her face while dreaming. Palmer smiled at her. Suddenly she heard voices coming closer from the street; she gripped her sniper and aimed out to see a familiar face, Ackerman.
