10. Nowhere To Go

As Palmer was about to call for Ackerman, Noah saw her first and opened fire on her. Palmer fell to the ground dodging the bullets; Eve woke up terrified not knowing what was going on. Palmer wrapped her arms around Eve as small parts of debris came falling from the ceiling. Ackerman lowered Noah’s weapon making him stop shooting.

“What the hell were you shooting at!?” Ackerman demanded to know. Palmer thought they were sent to kill her so she made Eve rise to her feet and climbed down the steps and go through the other exit to the street behind.

“I thought I saw someone.” Noah said.

“Doesn’t mean you just open fire Noah!” Ackerman shouted. Noah and Ackerman went into an argument but McConnell stepped away from them walking slowly down the road until he came to a sudden stop. He rushed back pushing Ackerman and Noah into the building opposite where Palmer and Eve was. A few short moments later a horde of Dwellers came down the road and surrounded the street outside. They crept through the exit and made their way up the street, the same way Palmer and Eve were going but the opposite road. As both parties made their way up the street away from the Dweller’s there was an opening on both streets leading to the street the Dwellers were on. Both groups ran through the gap at the same time but Palmer and Ackerman saw each other. While McConnell and Noah kept on running up the street, Ackerman came to a sudden stop as he saw her. Palmer stood there with Eve’s hand gripped in hers. Eve didn’t make a sound, she just stood there observing. Palmer and Ackerman just stood there looking at each other for a moment not wanting to say anything.

“Run.” Were the words Ackerman mouthed to Palmer. Palmer them realised he wasn’t against her. McConnell and Noah noticed Ackerman stopped to observe something and ran back to him. When Noah turned the corner he saw Palmer and Eve, he aimed his gun at Palmer but Ackerman shoved him into the wall next to him.

“Traitor!” Palmer mouthed furiously to Ackerman. Ackerman then pieced it together to know Palmer wasn’t lying. As Noah was about to get up McConnell aimed one of his pistols at his head making Noah stay perfectly still. Ackerman peered his head round the corner to see the Dwellers were still more down the street, Ackerman held his hand out gesturing for Palmer and Eve to run across. As Palmer and Eve were running across, they both stopped halfway to see Burrell and many men from Eden coming the other way. Burrell aimed his gun at Eve and shot. Palmer quickly picked her up and fell on the floor on the opposite side of Ackerman. Suddenly gun fire came from both ways. Palmer let go of Eve and noticed blood on the jacket she was wearing. Palmer looked down to see the bullet hit her in the stomach. The sudden pain took over her body making her groin in pain. She took a deep breath in and launched herself up picking Eve up in the process. She ran further down the road, disappearing further down the road, away from Ackerman. Dwellers started to run down the road after them. Ackerman shot one but was overwhelmed by three. McConnell shot two and Ackerman shot the other. Noah pushed McConnell and ran away from him down around the corner. As Noah was about to run after him Ackerman grabbed his arm.
“Leave him, we need to get Palmer.” Ackerman said seriously. Ackerman and McConnell sprinted past the madness after Palmer. They saw Dwellers chase them round a corner. They sprinted after them. As they turned the corner the only turning there was, was a left. They ran left but saw no one again apart from a left and right turning. Ackerman and McConnell looked down both ways to see the Dwellers split looking down both ways.

“You go left and I will go right.” Ackerman said with his gun ready in his hands. He jogged past McConnell tapping him on the shoulder. McConnell sprinted down the left road making no sound. Meanwhile Palmer was running with Eve in agony loosing grip of her. She eventually quickly placed her down and started to jog. They turned down a road to see a dead end, a small alley way of some sort. Just as they were about to turn back they heard scuffling of men’s feet. Palmer thought fast, she saw a rusty ladder higher up, she could lift Eve up there. She picked up Eve with no hesitation and lifted her up to the ladder. Eve grabbed it and started to climb. Palmer went to join her but couldn’t reach it. When Eve reached the first building opening, she climbed through and looked down at Palmer.

“Stay hidden.” Palmer whispered to Eve. Eve’s head crept backwards but she was still looking at Palmer down below. Four Dwellers turned the corner moments later and only saw Palmer. They started to slowly stroll laughing beneath their breath.

“Where is she?” The closest man asked Palmer.

“I’m not going to tell you.” Palmer said. The man then aimed his gun at her.

“Just tell me.” He said raising his eyebrows.

“No.” Palmer said with no fear. The man with no hesitation shot her straight in the heart. She stood there not moving for a moment, she slowly moved her head down to see the blood flowing down her top. Palmer fell and leant against the wall. The man started to laugh, they suddenly stopped and dropped their guns all gripped their heads. They all fell to the ground screaming. A moment later the screaming stopped, blood was coming out of their eyes, ears, nose and mouth. McConnell turned the corner and stopped in dead sprint to see Palmer. He ran to her leaning in front of her. Her head was bowed and her arms with no strength. He raised her head with his hand under her chin. Her face was pale, she wasn’t breathing. McConnell checked her pulse, she didn’t have one. He stood up quickly turning his head looking for Eve. He looked at the bodies but he suddenly heard a familiar voice shouting nearby, it was Ackerman.

“I’m over here Ackerman!” McConnell shouted as loud as he could through his bandana. Ackerman turned the corner and froze when he saw Palmer. He walked over fast, McConnell went to stop him but her pushed past him and put Palmer in his Arms.

“No no no no.” He kept on saying over and over again with more and more whimper in his voice. McConnell heard a piece of rubble fall from the building beside him. He looked up to see Eve sitting there on her knees. Eve started to climb down the ladder. McConnell grabbed her on the last bar and set her down on the ground. She walked to Palmer. She knelt in front of her and grabbed her hand. She closed her eyes and concentrated for a moment. McConnell stood closer to see what she was doing. Ackerman wiped the tears away from his cheek and was looking at Eve in confusion. Eve winced and then Palmer took a deep breath in seating up to fast for her own good. She quickly checked her stomach and her chest to find only a small scar of where a bullet was moments go. She noticed she was sitting so close to Ackerman she looked at him to notice he was crying. She hugged him tightly, he hugged back.

“I thought I lost you.” He whispered in her ear. She let go of Ackerman and turned to Eve.

“What did you do?” She asked her. Eve didn’t answer, she didn’t know how to.

“I told you, I’m different.” Eve replied. Ackerman stood up and pulled Palmer up with him. Eve went to stand up but fell over back on her knees. She was weak. Palmer quickly knelt in front of her and stroked the side of her cheek. Eve’ eyes kept closing more and more with every blink.

“She’s weak.” Palmer said turning her head to the others. Ackerman stood beside Eve, leant over and picked her up. She was lying in his arms with her head cocooned into Ackerman’s chest.  She was unconscious.

“We need to get back to Eden.” Ackerman said looking down the exit of the alley. They went to walk but Palmer noticed the bodies.

“Who killed them?” Palmer asked curiously.

“They were dead when I got here.” McConnell murmured through his bandanna. Palmer looked at Eve.

“She did it.” Palmer said. They all looked at each other all wondering the same thing, what was Eve.

“Let’s get moving.” Ackerman said. They all nodded and started to run through the streets away from the chaos.
