7. The Revelation

“Ma” she said giving her mother a hug “is Papa here?”

“Nay did ye need to talk to us both?”

“What troubles ye my lass?”

The endearment warmed Erica’s heart and made the next words slightly easier “Ma I have grand mama’s gift. I have the sight”

“Tell me lass”

So Erica told her mum about what she had seen at the lake. Her mother sat in silence and Erica shifted uncomfortably in her plush seat.

“This could mean trouble I will speak to yer da we will decide what will happen but no harm will come to ye I promise”

“Thanks mama” she said kissing her mother forehead lightly.

Erica stood at the window, her parents were in the next room discussing what had happened the day before, what It meant and what they would do about it. Her brother was in there with them. Apparently he had been sitting in the woods and watching them quietly, he had been eager to see how Blair would treat her. He had seen the kiss but most importantly he knew or could guess how Lord Blair would react. She had watched the sun set and the stars pass slowly overhead lighting up different parts of the black world on their journey. She had heard sounds of the forest and the voice of the wild that called on the wind. Now the moon was rising slowly above the horizon it stayed so constant the same cycle every time it never changed that cycle and never did its course stray from where it had been before. Erica watched the moon unaware of the tears that slid down her cheeks in a silent confirmation of her fear, fear for what could happen, fear for what was happening and fear for what could not be.

Lord Blair knocked on the door and waited for a response. He knew she was in there but when no response came forth he quietly opened the door, concerned by the fragility that seemed to have shimmered around her all day. There she stood half silhouetted by the light of the moon and half highlighted. He stood silently in the doorway watching her aware now that she hadn’t heard him. A slight glisten on her cheek seemed to drive a knife through his heart as he realised she was crying. His heart felt wrenched, he wanted to go over and take her in his arms and comfort her but he knew she wouldn’t welcome such an advance. He was also very aware that he was intruding on some private matter, he was about to leave when she turned as if finally sensing his presence and stared at him.

Erica hadn’t heard the knock on the door and she hadn’t realised it had been opened but coming out of her revere she sensed someone watching her turning her gaze clashed with Lord Blair’s and the concern in his eyes nearly broke her. She stood still and silent staring at him with wide, watchful eyes following his moves.

“Erica, are ye alright?” He finally broke the watchful silence.

“My health is fine Blair” her voice was quiet and sweet, its dulcet tones soothing.

“Why were ye crying?”

“It is a full moon tonight, and tomorrow that moon will begin to fade, and then we will reach a night where it is dark and there is no moon, only to have a new moon appear the next night. That stays the same the cycle never changes and it is about life and death and even the moon has a prime.” She paused a moment and Blair for a moment thought that was the end and was about to ask her what she meant when she spoke again “I was crying because I was thinking how all things must at some point come to an end” Her honest and simple answer shocked him and he was amazed at how sensitive his fiancée could be to the world around her.

“Ye shouldn’t be here Blair. Leave.” Her command though simply stated and without any harshness in her voice left no room for argument or objection. Blair felt his back stiffen at her dismissal of him and yet he recognised the truth she spoke and so without objection he left the room. Erica watched as his back stiffened she almost expected him to object but then he relaxed and she was almost disappointed when he turned and left the room without another word.

“Goodbye Blair” those quietly spoken words as the door shut behind him haunted him that night, they sounded so final. He tossed and turned in his bed unable to find sleep as those words echoed in his head. What had she meant by them, why was she withdrawing from him? He sensed that while her answers to his questions had been honest they also hadn’t been the full story, so what was going on.

The next morning Blair looked for Erica at the table with her family but she wasn’t there. She hadn’t been there the day before either. He was about to slip away from the table to go look for her when her mother came over to him. “Lord Blair, I would like to have a word with ye in the solar of my appointed rooms if ye please?”

“Of course My Lady, I will be there shortly. What do ye wish to discuss?”

“I would like to talk to ye about Erica and now would be best” the slightly strained tone to her voice and worry on her face made Blair stop for a moment to look at her. Did she know where Erica was? What was going on? Did this have anything to do with Erica being in her mother’s room so long the day before?

Blair followed Erica’s mother, Mary, up to her solar, already seated in the room was Erica who looked pale and drawn. Without thought Blair asked “Erica have ye eaten?  Ye dinae look very well”

“I have already eaten and I am fine a little tiered is all” he could see this wasn’t true but he wasn’t going to argue with her right now.

“Sit Lord Blair” Mary said gesturing to a comfortable plush chair near hers, “What do ye know of The Sight, the gift of a taibhsear?”

“Not much My Lady, It is an affliction that affects women supposedly giving them foresight of events”

“It’s much more than that. Your right that it mostly affects women, but it not only allows them to see visions of what will happen in the future, but also insight into people’s past. It is not something they can control and it usually a great burden for someone who has it. Those who have the sight are also usually more in tune with the natural world around them. Unfortunately such women are now being declared witches and evil no matter how much good works they do.”

“I believe that is the case but why are we discussing this?”

“I will tell ye in a minute but first what is your opinion on such women?”

“I believe that so long as they use their knowledge appropriately and carry out good deeds with their abilities they are nothing more than ordinary people who have been given a gift to help people with. But if they misuse their gift then I agree with the punishment”

“Erica’s Grandmother, Elspeth has the gift. And her grandfather showed signs of it as well. Her grandmother has over the years saved many lives. She tried to save the life of Queen Mary but the queen would not listen to her. She has always used her gift well and for the good of others. She always thought I too would have the gift and therefor trained me in how to use it appropriately but I have never had it. I in turn trained Erica how to deal with it in case she should have it.”

The conversation went on for a long time as Mary told Blair of everything that had happened by the lake and of the discussions since. Blair sat mostly in silence but once she had finished he asked his questions in a cool calm voice and she gave him straight answers. Finally as the sun reach its zenith in the sky he sat in silence processing all that he had found out. Suddenly he broke the silence that had surrounded them “Why did ye tell me all of this?”

“It was my idea to do that. Ye were or are going to marry Erica and a secret like that canae stay secret in a marriage. I also wish my daughter all the happiness that life can bring and that canae be built on deceit.” The silence descended once more as he worked through everything.

Erica sat with her head bowed she was so scared, what would he say, he didn’t seem to be dealing with this very well. Outwardly there had been no shouting and no accusations but it had been his quiet self-contained response that had worried her more than anything else could. She couldn’t read what he was thinking but she knew he was thinking hard. Then she watched as he stood up slowly then stalked to the window then he leant against the frame.

In the glass he could see the reflection of Erica her head bowed and tears once more streaked down he cheeks silently she drowned in her own sorrow. His heart ached at the sight slowly he turned to face Mary. “My Lady could ye leave Erica and I alone fer a moment please” although phrased like a question the force of his voice made it into a command.

Blair kept his back to her even once her mother had left the room as he tried to figure out what he would say to her.

Erica sat in silence as he sent her mum out then stood on the far side of the room with his back turned. He didn’t care for her anymore; she hoped he wouldn’t say anything to anyone though. Finally unable to stay silent she sought the courage to speak.

From behind him her quiet and wobbly voice came “I can understand if ye want to break off our engagement the only thing I ask is that I be allowed to live in peace.”

He turned suddenly on the balls of his feet to face her; angry, hurt and scared all at once he fought over his initial desired response which was to shout at her.

Taking a deep breath he fought for control over his emotions and then in an even voice he said to her “Erica I am not going to allow any harm to come to ye but ye have to recognise how much this is fer me to take in right now and I am not sure what I want or how I am going to do it. I would like it if ye would stay at my home a while so I can sort it out cause I want to see we were will go.”

A sob tore loose from her throat and she bowed her head hide the tears that had begun to pour down her cheeks in twin rivers that she seemed unable to stem. He stood for a moment unsure of what to do, the he stepped forward took  her in his arms holding her gently rubbing circles on her back as he let her cry herself out.

Finally she collected herself “I’m sorry” she sniffed now she was mostly in control

“It’s alright Erica” he said kneeling in front of her so he could look into her eyes. Slowly she straightened her back and lifted her chin and gave him a smile not the bright one she had held two days back but a smile none the less. “Come let us go get some lunch and then maybe your mother will be willing to chaperone us on a trip outside of a picnic of a sort?” Her smile brightened considerably “Yes I would  like that” she answered as she stood up and he gentle placed her fingers on his arm with his over the top as he led her out the room to find her mother.
