11. The Rescue

Blair reached the cliff top at the bay and scanned the water. She had to be here, his body was held tense by his worry and he thought his heart was beating so hard it would shatter. Then a glimpse out on the water it was a plaid. It felt as though a fist closed around his heart and held it in an iron vice while another one punched him in the gut he glanced to Danny and registered the agony on his face clearly he had also seen it. It was her plaid Blair was sure of that no one else wore those colours he had had it specially made for her as a gift and had handed it to her the morning she went missing. He fell to his knees unable to weep but it felt as his life just wanted to slip out of his grasp and he wasn’t sure he wanted to stop it.

A flash of red on the water brought him to his feet. It was her hair; it bobbed above the water once more. That was all he needed without thought he shucked his plaid, his boots and his trews and dived into the freezing water below. He quickly traversed the distance to the rock where he found her bound. Taking a deep breath he ducked under the water and began to work the knots loose. It took three breaths for him to complete the task but eventually it was done. Holding her limp body gently and keeping her head above the water he swam for shore. Time seemed to slow to a crawl everything slowed down as he struggled toward the shore. The currents ripped at him trying to pull him apart and trying to separate the pair. After what felt like an age he placed her unresponsive body on the ledge that was the start of a path up the cliff face. Silently he prayed, while he alternately rubbed her back and patted her solidly between her shoulder to force the water up and out of her lungs.

It didn’t take long for Danny to join them he threw a dry plaid around Blair’s shoulders and held one ready for his sister while he held onto the horses. She couldn’t die now Blair wept, she had to live she couldn’t die not now not when he had just begun to realise that he loved her. Suddenly her body stiffened convulsed and she coughed the water out from her lungs. “Thank god!” Blair said hoarsely as he grabbed her in a tight hug and allowed Danny to throw a warm plaid around her shoulders.

Blair clung to her like a drowning man who is thrown a life line and tears streamed down his cheeks as he realised how close he had come to losing her. Erica’s hands which at first had been limp around his neck now clung with a fierceness that rivalled his “I love ye Blair Please do no’ leave me. Please don’t leave me again.” She begged through her tears. “Never Erica, I willnae ever leave ye again. I love ye my sweet lass.” He responded through his tears. For a long time they just clung to each other unaware and uncaring off what was happening around them. Danny’s voice eventually broke through their bubble  “Sorry to have to break this up but we need to get out of here now or we are going to have company in the form of MacDonnell clansman and I dinae think they will be as accommodating as the other lot we ran into.”

“What?” Erica said shocked as she quickly began to skim Blair over for injuries but none seemed apparent.

“I’m fine, but ye and I have an appointment with the priest for tomorrow and I really would like to keep it” he said with a charming smile curving his lips. It was the type of warm indulgent smile that just made her want to lean up and kiss him warmly on the mouth, which she did. The kiss quickly turned from a light brush of lips into something much heavier before Blair pulled back and said quietly “We will continue that later, but right now I think your brother is right, we need to get going if we dinae want to all die by a MacDonnell sword” With much reluctance she acquiesced. She exchanged her wet plaid for her brothers dry one the warm plaid counteracted the wet trews and shirt as Blair pulled his dry plaid on over the top of his wet clothes her wet plaid was folded into one of Danny’s saddle bags and then they set out for home at a brisk pace and avoiding any populated areas. They made good time and arrived just before sunrise the next morning.
