3. The Longest Second I'd Ever Experienced

Friday soon arrived and I'm not going to deny it, I was NOT looking forward to the concert. Punk rock really isn't my style of music. Gemma's cousin Jack was in the band, I know how close they were, and I know how proud of him she was, so I don't understand why I had to come. I had no idea what I was going to wear, or do while everybody screamed, maybe I could pretend to have a stomach bug and spend most of the concert in the bathroom. But, I guess that's not fair on her, I mean, I did promise her I'd go.

"You ready?" She asked, sounding excited as we both clambered into her bright orange Mustang.

"As ready as I’ll ever be." I tried to sound as enthusiastic as possible. I tried to dress appropriately but I guess I kind of failed, I wore a pair of black leggings with my light blue Aeropostale t-shirt with my white converse (as always). It was quite a warm evening so I didn't bother bringing a cardigan. Gemma wore her black skater dress with pink Dr Martens and paint splattered tights. I envied her. She was so pretty and unique I was just so... me.

When we arrived I was shocked by the venue, I thought it was going to be some kind of arena but it wasn’t. It was like small modern lounge with low lights and leather seats. There must have been about 200 people there at least, all girls like Gemma, dressed like Gemma and who I could easily mistake as Gemma. Then I realized how I go from so simple and boring to the most uniquely dressed girl in the room. On the stage there was a long curtain that draped at the back. On it was the big words 'ALL TIME LOW' and beneath it was a small skull and crossbones.

The crowd erupted when the 4 boys arrived on stage. One of them was a regular height with not much hair and was placed nicely behind a drum kit. Another boy who was fairly tall stood towards the back. He had a lot of tattoos and a nose ring. His hair was short and dark brown and he wore a t-shirt that said 'I'm Americkan' and a hot pink bass around his neck.

The Guitarist had long black hair that draped perfectly over his face. He was the tallest of the boys. I recognized him instantly, it was Jack Barakat, Gemma's cousin.

I couldn't take my eyes off the lead singer. The way he acted on stage, so confident, almost cocky, wasn't very appealing but he seemed to have a lot of fans. Girls would scream his name. He had light brown hair that also fell on his face. He was wearing a snapback on the back of his head. It was black and purple and had the Baltimore Ravens badge on it. He wore tight black jeans and a t-shirt with the band name on. I wasn't going to deny it, he was very easy on the eye.

"Good evening Baltimore" Alex, I think I heard them call, said into the microphone "This first song is one of our old favourites, Lost in Stereo"

When the music started, I felt everybody around me start dancing and singing along. I felt so out of place.

"She's dancing alone, I'm ready to go but she's so-" Alex sang. He was really talented.

"Lost in stereo, lost in stereo!" The crowd continued. I looked over at Gemma. Well, who I thought was Gemma. She was in her element. Singing and dancing to the sound of the music, staring adoringly at Alex as he took in the crowd and rocked out like he didn't give a damn about anything else. He did look like a rock star up there.

Before my mind could register what was happening, Alex was right up close to the crowd. Girls held their hands out in adoration, screaming his name, desperate for him to touch them. But for a second, his soft, brown eyed gaze met mine. Eventually he did look away, after about a second. The longest second I’d ever experienced. Then I realized The expression that was on my face. Nothingness. He probably looked at me because he was laughing at my awkward mannerisms. He was probably thinking 'what the hell is that nerd doing at our concert. Freak'. I decided to make the awkward journey through the crowd of screaming girls to the bathroom, to the safe haven.
